Mac users?
We are looking into getting a new iMac. Now, we have always had/used PCs, but recently Mark has used a Mac laptop at work and loves it. I am just hunting around for Mac people and looking for the pros and cons. I like how the iMac design eliminates the need for a bulky tower, but is this a system that'll stay cool (not overheated) and hold up to the test of time? Almost all of the reviews that I read online about this computer are positives. And I remember some users here are Mac people (I am pretty sure that Kara is one of them.) So please tell me all about your experiences with them!

Re: Mac users?
I use an iMac at my work. I really am happy with it. If you're not, Leopard comes with Bootcamp, so you can install Windows and be right at home :)
It's complicated at first for new users, but you will eventually get used to it...

I use one 4 work too (G5). Took some getting used to, but really a great system. I think overall I prefer pc's.
There are towerless pc's too, I believe Gateway makes one.

Re: Mac users?
I'm on an imac right now and use an ibook most of the time, I love both of them and they don't seem to slow down at all like our old PCs used to. My boyfriend has the newer imac and its really cool, it has a bunch of cool features and looks really clean.. his old PC took around 1-5 min. to just load one page and it would freeze all the time.
The only problem I have ever had with my imac or ibook is that sometimes safari would quit or freeze, I got firefox after a while and it works really well

Re: Mac users?
Ive had a macbook for bout a 1 1/2 years now and am a computer tech.. the virus world for PC has gotten a lot worse since january.. the hackers are taking the upper hand on the good guys it seems. macs dont get viruses cuz hackers dont make them due to the fact that only about 2% of the US own them.
pros = hasnt slowed at all, very user friendly, NO VIRUSES, no bs antivirus or spyware software you have to buy, you get free tech service when you make appt at apple store, and you can buy applecare so if any hardware on you mac goes bad with in 3 years they replace it for free (250$)
con = i only have 1... much harder if not impossible to get some games cuz most games are made or sponsored by microsoft
MY OPINION... BUY A MAC!!!!

Re: Mac users?
Thanks for your replies :) I know that no system is going to be aperfect all of the time without flaws. I like the Macs too because I am a music-o-holic, and I plan on buying an iPod as well to tap into all of that potential.

Re: Mac users?
Thanks for the posts! I really dislike Vista; my mom has it at her place, and it just annoys me. We run here on xp here.

Re: Mac users?
I have a fairly new 20" Intel Imac and I love it. I have been using macs for a long time and I would say that overall, they are much more reliable.
No computer is perfect. I certainly know people who have had trouble Macs, but, usually people enjoy them. Buy a new imac! I promise you will love it. Especially if you love music.

Re: Mac users?
Don't have an iMac, but we did get a new Mac Pro earlier this year. It's a MONSTER and I absolutely love it! Super fast, super quiet, super reliable! I do a lot with photo/video, working with huge files, and it just hums along, quick & quiet as can be. :gj:

I too have a macbook pro...love it, wouldnt trade it for anything.
The only con about macs I have seen has been mentioned, not all software is mac compatible yet...so alot of your games for PC are not found for MAC, and I use CAD on a daily basis, but there are no MAC CAD versions, and CAD doesnt plan on making a MAC version just because 90% of firms use PC's......but I have ways around this

Re: Mac users?
Another Mac user here. I have a 12" PowerBook and love it. It's 3 years old and is far from being "out dated". Only thing mine can't do is run windows because its a PowerPC chip. But, the fact that after three years a computer is still very functional speaks volumes about their longevity. My iBook before this I had for 5 years.
I think they're just easier to use. And if you're using it for music stuff, its great! Garage band is an awesome program, and a buddy of mine just got Logic on his new Macbook and has nothing but great things to say about it.
Go for it...you won't be disappointed! And if you're a student/teacher/education related something, they offer an education discount that can save you a couple of hundred bucks, so check that out too. I would also recommend buying as much RAM as you can afford, but don't get it through apple, get it 3rd party.

Re: Mac users?
We use mac's here at work we use the quad core pro's with like 4 gig of ram and a terabit harddrive. :D
I wish I had this machine at home..
Can you say crysis

Re: Mac users?
As a user of countless systems ranging from my first TI99/4A to my current quad-core optiplex, I have to say that OSX is by far my favorite desktop OS. While much is made of it's simplicity, it is also far more powerful than it's windows counterpart, being a full-blood unix under the hood.
Simply put, the interface is far more intuitive, applications are easier to install and interact with, and most of the glaring liabilities of windows are noticeably absent (spy-ware, virii, registry, and oil-tanker sized security holes).

Re: Mac users?
I have had my macbook pro for almost two years now. It has 2.16 GHz and 2 Gigs of ram. I also have windows installed on it. I tried Vista but hated it so went back to XP. I have to use this for CAD and MatLab. I just recently put logic express on it and so far love the program. I will never go back to a PC if I can avoid it.

Re: Mac users?
I'm a network engineer by trade, and use Windows machines all day long and I can tell you that I get a lot of satisfaction going home to my trusty iMac. For those times I need Windows I run Parallels and take care of it.
Great computer. Get one.

I use both pc and mac at work and home. I use macs for video/graphics/photo work as well. (All power macs,G5, etc.) They are awesome!!! Very stable and fast.
We got 1 imac at work and it can't keep up with our work flow or the demands we place on it. It's been in the shop twice. I have 2 friends who have had the same problem with them. But if you aren't as demanding with what you use them for an imac should work for you.
The only thing I like the pcs better for is on our internet system at work the pcs are way faster accessing info online. Don't know why. All computers are on the same connection.

I'm curious what kind of work load you're putting on the iMacs to bog them down? I've used the newer ones, and they've done everything I've asked them to with flying colors. Keep in mind that the real powerhouse of the Macs are the Mac Pros, so maybe that would be better for your tasks?

Re: Mac users?
Thanks everyone! We have decided that a Mac will definately be our next system. We have a few debts to clear up in the coming months but are in agreement that Macs = awesome.
