My corn snake escaped. Help!

I purchased a baby white corn snake last night and put it in a 10 gallon tank with what I thought was a secure lid. The lady at the pet store had said that corn snakes generally are not climbers, so I didn't think too much into the possibility of her escaping. She ate a frozen mouse last night and became quite active within the cage. This morning when I peeked into her cage, I discovered she had shed, but she was nowhere to be found. I've searched all over my apartment but there are so many knoocks and crannies, I feel as though I will never find her. What is the best way to find a snake? I've heard of leaving a frozen rat in a box and waiting for the snake to come find it, but would that really work if she just ate last night? Help!

Keep looking! Look in every nook and cranny you can think of, especially warm spots. Behind/under the fridge, near the back of a computer, anything. I made the same mistake as you when I purchased a kingsnake 2 years ago, I put the lid on the ten gallon the pet-store said would be safe, but he found a way out. Try and keep the apartment cool, and keep the tank open - with lots of warmth. You can even plug in a human heating pad and set it on the floor in the middle of the room. I know there are other tricks, but I can't think of any so lets see if others can help you too.

I found my kingsnake 6 months later in the closet, so don't give up. Unfortunately I believe someone let him out when I was not home, but he did disappear a few weeks after I found him:(

This is what i am using for my new albino kingsnake - when he is fatter he will go in a ten gallon tank but until then, this thing is escape proof! lol The clips are quite strong.

First off dont take any more advice from that pet store CORN SNAKES DO CLIMB :rolleyes:.If you look thru the bedding carefully or the general area of the enclosure you might find him/her.If not place some flour around the edges of the walls and you should find "track" marks that will leed to his/her hiding space :gj:.Keep us posted

My friends cornsnake loves to hide in the bedding. I'm sure you looked through there though. Also try looking directly under the tank. Good Luck! and I hope you find it!

I would look through the bedding really well...Corns are burrowers and very good at hiding. they are also very good at escaping! Which means...yes they can and do climb.

ps...one of mine got out a long time ago and I found him in my daughters piggy bank that was sitting on top of the enclosure.

I would look carefully in everything near the enclosure...and also try the flour trick.

It's day 3 since Medusa's escape and still no sign of her. I have literally torn the apartment apart. Just before she came up missing my fiance and I fell asleep on the futon in our living room with our dog. I'm positive the dog wouldn't intentionally harm her, as he is a big baby and whines if he so much as spots an insect crawling across the ceiling. Just to be safe, we've temporarily shipped the dog off to my parents house until Medusa turns up.

A lot of you had remarked that she could be found in or around her cage, but this was her first night in a new environment, so it's not like the location was familiar to her. How far do you think she could have gone within this time period? I'm worried she made her way to the bathroom, which is one room over, because there is a hole next to our tub that leads to the pipes. There are also holes under the counter in the kitchen, which is also one room over from where she escaped. I have shined a flashlight in these and other small holes I have found, but no luck so far.

Any other ideas? We just moved to this apartment about a week ago, so we're not even fully unpacked yet.

Good luck finding the corn. I had one escape several years ago. I searched the room thoroughly but came up empty handed. Three days later I came home from work to find her waiting in front of the closed door looking for food. I see my current corn pressed up against the screen at the top of her 55 gallon tank, held there by pure muscle power. One constant in this field, trust no mass market pet store. Most stores hire high school or college kids with little or no experience with reptiles.

I cut a hole in a small cardboard box and sat the box upside down over top of a heating pad in the livingroom. Next to the heating pad I have a bowl of water and a 2 liter pop bottle (I cut the top off and placed it on backwards) with 2 baby rats inside. I was debating putting the pop bottle on top of the heating pad, but I figured that would start to stink up my livingroom. We'll see how this works, I hope she turns up.

yeah i would heavily sent a trap kinda thing mentioned above and put it along the wall of a room. i noticed that my corn snake wont really travel into the middle of a room, he prefers going along the wall. your is prob the same way

Check the kitchen really well. I found a corn snake in my kitchen last year, put it in a 10 gallon tank with paper towels and a little flexwatt and threw a rat pink in for him, let him go the next morning. I did the same thing with a blue racer that i did manage to take pics of so i will post them up tonight.

SIGH... another loved pet lost because the idiots at pet stores know Nothing about the animals... Grr

Young corn snakes, aside from being able to climb superbly and lift themselves nearly straight up, are excellent escape artists. If there's even the tiniest opening they'll find it and get out.

So Sorry to hear that yours flew the coop, but don't give up hope. Place a lamp with a low watt bulb over a nice spot against a wall (where you can still see) or place a hide over a low heat heating pad. I've heard of corns that got out being found months later, so don't despair. :)

I've only had one snake get out of a cage - an adult male ball python - I was wondering why my cats were so interested in one of my boa cages and when I got up to see what they were looking at my ball python was curled up on the top of the boas cage because it was warm there. He was probably only out for a couple hours and I didn't even know he was missing, I got lucky! Lucky the cats didn't hurt him while he was out too.

A little white snake will be a lot harder to find then a big ball python, I wish you luck! Keep us posted!
