Our First Clutch (pic heavy)

Finally a quiet moment to get these pictures posted and a bit of information about our very first clutch. It's a long picture heavy post but hey - I'm an over excited first timer so bear with me LOL.

We had 6 eggs laid and all 6 hatched out. Here we go....

#1 - female Yellowbelly - 64 grams

#3 - female Yellowbelly - 47 grams - this is the little one from the boob egg - she unfortunately has a kink but we're just going to take it day by day with her and see how she does - I wasn't even expecting the egg to make it let alone get a decent sized, active baby snake out of the egg - so far she's acting just like her siblings and seems completely healthy other than the spinal deformity

#6 - female Yellowbelly - 57 grams - I love the stripe on this one

So if we got our Yellowbelly identifying right (we used the 4 standards for YB's as listed on the Hunter's Guide to Morphs) and I sexed them correctly (I'll be resexing after they've had their first shed in a week or so) we got - 1.3 Yellowbelly, 1.1 Normal. :)

They are all settled into the hatchling rack, using their baby hides and moving around nicely.

That's great jo, I might be looking to talk to you about one of those females. It's a shame about the one with the kink, I love the pattern down near her tail. Either way I'll be tossing you a pm soon.

You must be over the moon. Great ratio/odds on sex and genotype. Very nice.

Ms. Kinky Gerlinky (not sure where that came from) is just a beautiful girl. And the boy below her in the thread is a stunner as well.

But really... she is just a lovely looking snake. Hopefully her kink will not impede her too much and she will make a great pet snake for... I was going to say "someone"... but that would mean that you would actually let her out of your house at some point. :)

They are just lovely. Congrats to you and Mike for doing everything right.

Thanks Bruce! Well Kate and Nicole are already asking if they can adopt Little Miss Kinky Slinky if she does well. It's early days yet and we've never dealt with a snake with this sort of issue but we'll just watch her to see if she can do well with eating and defecating, grows well, etc. and talk to our trusted breeder friends about how snakes like her do as a pet.

Hard to say if we'll be able to let her go to another home though. I remember saying to Tim Bailey that I wasn't going to let myself get attached to that boobie egg in case it didn't make it....Tim....you were so right...I got attached. :oops: :)

OH OH OH... I get to ask a newbie question. :)

Is there any chance of it correcting itself, or is a kink a deformity that is irreversible?

I guess I just see so many hard luck stories with babes that work out in the long run so I am curious.

Still a HOT HOT HOT girl regardless.

Thanks BT. Like I said I'm going to go through the clutch a few times and re-check those genders over the coming weeks. I've never had my hands on babies this fresh out of the egg, let alone popped one so the numbers may change slightly.

Thanks Diana. #6 has a pretty nice stripe going on and the richest colors of all the babies in this clutch (reminds me of her daddy, Riordan, colorwise).

I really don't know Bruce. I'm assuming as she eats and grows a bit it might be a bit less obvious. I'm a newbie at this too so I figure I'll be bugging some of the wonderful experienced breeders here to get their opinions on what her future might be.

Congrats on the hatchlings Jo. I would guess from looking at the picture, that the kinkes girl will be ok for a pet. It may be possible, if she passes waste fine, and grows to 1500 plus grams, for her to have a clutch of eggs. However, it may be a risk, and it would be a judgement call as to how her life had been to that point.

I like Kinky the most Jo hopefully she'll be alright. Great clutch

Thanks so much, Tim. Mike and I really appreciate how helpful you've been to us going through all these first experiences with these eggs. We're going to do just as you and Monica have suggested (and please thank Monica for talking to me the other day on the phone about this little kinked female).

If she does well and never is breedable, that's just fine. My oldest daughter is very interested in her as a pet or she may well stay here with us and become a part of our school education program. She could carry a message to the kids that being born a little different isn't such a bad thing really. :)

Thanks Emilio. We're very excited with all of them but little Kinky is sort of special since we didn't expect a viable hatchling from that egg in the first place.

I've been waiting for this thread, and I'm so glad that you finally had a chance to post the pics! They are a beautiful group! The kinked girl is super HOT, even with her slight kink. I hope she is able to thrive, and does not have any problems.

Just a bunch of total awesomeness, Joanna!!! What fabulous odds, and all six beautiful, healthy babies!! (I'm confident little Miss Kinky will be fine!!) Of course, I never doubted your insane husbandry skills! It stands to reason that someone who takes such good care of their animals would have such awesome success making babies! :hug:

Thanks Justin. I'm very new at sexing recently hatched baby snakes so I'll be repeated the popping a few more times just to be comfortable in my own mind that we've got it right. They look so pretty all lined up in the new hatchling rack. :D

Thanks Deb. The first thing I thought of actually when I saw her looks was how pretty she was so the kink did make me a bit sad at first but that's life. Breeding is going to have a lot of us facing these things and far worse. Having to make tough decisions or face heartbreak. It's not all about "whoohooo lookie what I made!" so this one lovely little snake is going to teach Mike and I about dealing with imperfection.

I was in there earlier tidying up (okay that's an excuse to peek at the babies but heck my BP room has never looked better LOL) and I took Riordan, their sire, out for a moment and held him up to the row of his offspring. I'd like to report he was SUPREMELY disinterested. :rofl:

Awwwww Jo, they are just beautiful!

We had a little one with a kink last year . . . a cute little blond pastel female. Her kink was about 1 inch down from her head. I was really worried about her ability to eat. We decided that if she couldn't eat, we would put her down - I was so not looking forward to that.

Well, 1 year later and she is growing like a pig. She can somehow eat and while the kink is still there, it is not quite so noticeable. She will always be a wonderful pet.

Thanks so much for sharing that, Alice. I've no experience with a kink like this so any information from you experienced folks is a real godsend to us right now. So far she's doing just what the others are - the whole bunch of them are heading into their first sheds right on time. :)
