I cried
Here the story I keep my males that aren't in the breeding rotation in the same tub, no more than 4 to a tub. Well tonight was rat night so I'm cleaning tubs and all is good to go. After I am done I hear a scuffle. Now I'm use to rat fights but this one sounded different. I opened the tun to find a bloody mess and thats not figurative. It look looked like a hand grenade went off in that tub. Every body was covered in blood. Then I found the source. :tears::tears::tears::tears::tears:.
My first male from my very first litter ever had been bitten in the hind leg severing the femoral artery. I got him out and did every thing I could think of but I just couldn't stop the bleeding. I came in the house crying and covered in blood. :tears::tears::tears:
Now that upset Carrie and I just couldn't find the words. The old man had bled to death in my hands :tears::tears::tears::tears:.
I'm a mess. And what is to become of the culprit. That did it.
BOA!
That rat was my buddy he was the first hooded I ever birthed. To have him go like that. I am just crushed right now.
I love my rats but he was special.
I am exhausted!

Re: I cried
I'm sorry Ed. It's amazing how those little critters worm their way into our hearts. Sending big hugs your way!

Re: I cried
:O Oh man Ed, sorry to hear that, I know that had to be tough to take, for any rat, but especially your first male that you produced, I can't imagine. I can only imagine what Carries thoughts were as you came in the door, I imagine that was a first for her. Again sorry for your loss, and your experience. :(

Re: I cried
:(:( Ouch, that hurts. Big comforts and hugs to you, Ed, that's hard to take. I had to give up my trio of rats when I started keeping more than 2 snakes so I could have room for a mouse colony and it was really hard giving up my old Golden Aguti girl...it would have been heartbreaking to have her go that way!

Re: I cried
Many hugs and empathies your way. I have never bred my own little guys, but I have had many as pets. I purchased a feeder mouse when my king escaped, and I ended up keeping the little guy and buying him a jungle gym set-up and everything. His favorite food was corn. He died a few months later and I was torn. I am afriad to own another, it would break my heart to have something like that happen again.
Warm fuzzy thoughts heading your way.

Awww Ed - that's so tough, I'm so sorry to hear that!

Re: I cried
Ed I would have cried too! Sometimes we just get so attached to our breeder's, it's always so sad to lose such a good animal. Even more so, when we lose one that held such sentimental value.

Re: I cried
I understand. I am very attached to one of my rats, he is a great-great...(?) grandfather many times over. Keeps perfect order in his tubs and even in his old age (3 years) is still one of my best breeders.
I don't know what to say. Hopefully, today will shine a bit brighter if something happens to perk you up.

Re: I cried
Ed, my heartfelt sympathies for your pal...
Its a harsh way to go, but at least you found him before he went.

Re: I cried
Very sorry to hear about your boy. I never keep any males toghether anymore unless they are babies/small. I have seen males battle for dominace and it is not pretty. My wife is very attached to out collection and is very sad when the oldtimers go.

Re: I cried
Awww Ed what a crummy thing to happen to a dear old rattie buddy. I've gotten very attached to a few of mine over the years and it's always harsh when they go but worse so with the experience you had to go through with him. :(
