Re: Albino Gator Preview
Sweet!:O
I was actually wondering the same thing as Lawrence, do you use shades of some kind for their basking areas?

They have been kept out of the sun most of their lives and there are varying opinions on wether or not it is necessary. Greg and I both believe that UV light is crucial to their long term health. Some believe that their skin may burn in the sun, we think that the white skin will better reflect the light and do not think they will burn. Others have suggested that the sun will damage their eyes. While some adults do appear to have cloudy eyes and I think this could be damage from the sun, I think that it is related to a possible genetic defect in some of the animals, not effecting most individuals. While going over the animals very closely last week, some of the smaller animals pupils did not seem to dilate correctly when transitioning from a dark room to the outdoor sunlight. I think that a small percentage of the animals are born with this problem and that those animals are the ones later in life to develop the "cloudy" eyes.
They will be housed in an outdoor enclosure protected 50/50 from the sun, from shade from both Greg's building and several large oak trees. They will have two separate ponds and always have the option to bask in the sun or lay in the shade.

Re: Albino Gator Preview
Thanks for the great info, Neil!
Although I don't necessarily agree with your theory about the white reflecting the sun and preventing skin damage. If that was the case, I wouldn't get burned as easily as I do. :P It could just be that reptiles have a different defense against harmful UV exposure than mammals. BTW, have you ever heard of a reptile getting sunburned or skin cancer?
-
Re: Albino Gator Preview
Wow Neil, They look really good.
Are they from related blood lines?
-
Re: Albino Gator Preview

Reptile skin is most definitely different from Mammals. If you look at many reptiles, even iguanas as an example, their skin turns nearly black in the morning to absorb and soak in the heat from the sun yet the skin does not "burn". I do not think that the skin will burn or cause cancer like it does in mammals and I think that the white will reflect more heat than it would if they were sold black thus leaning the chances of burning.

More than likely. While I'm not going to go into the long drawn out story of where and how they came about (it will all be detailed on the website shortly). I believe that at the very least they are from the same mother and more than likely the same father.
Andrew, sorry buddy, but she is in florida for good. Most crodilians need atleast a year to aclimate before breeding, so she will be spending all her time down in sunny florida relaxing, hopefully falling in love:D

Wow... those are really hot. Love the pics. Please keep us supplied with pics as they grow.
Do you think that it's the same as BPs, where an albino x albino results in all albino young?

Don's is pretty good, the larger females (especially mine) are not all that freindly...... They have not ever been held and at their size should have their mouths taped however it does not make for good pictures:D
I'll upload some pictures later in the week of a broken broom and some splashing water :O

Re: Albino Gator Preview
Great, now I want an albino burm and an albino gator, two large pets I will likely never have the privilege to own. I got a chance to get up close and personal with this girl when a friend from a local reptile zoo/rescue facility (Reptilia) came and visited my college.

Wow Neil those are sweet... at what age and size are they able to breed? Make sure when you get some babies you bring em down to the columbus show!! In my experience gators make sweet pets and can be reallllly tame... is it just cuz they haven't been handled at all?
