    My Hogger (DIAL UP DEATH)
Hey guys, i got my western about a week ago. He is doing great. I got him to eat, he pooped, he has crazy tunnels. I love this little guy. He has an awesome personality. Alot more lively than my ball. I dont have a name for him/her yet. Suggestions? :please:

Woah, that guy is really...red! He even has "scarlet fever" on his tongue!
He's wasn't sold to you as a normal, am I correct? I noticed that your Hogger is nearing
the shedding process because his belly is bluish-grayish instead of ink-black.
When hiss (hey, they do that, right?) eyes start to look milky that's when the period starts that you don't handle him. You won't need to raise the humidity or anything like that though because he's a "dry-dweller" (that's why Hoggers are so different when it comes to other snakes in captivity). Try a name with a mystical tone to it (don't do names based on it's behavior or appearance).

i bought him as a normal. i got him for 110 at a lps. is he not a normal? i thought he was alot more red than most pictures i have seen. also i have heard to feed him two pinkies a week? is that right? i got him to eat again today. another ?... does their venom aid in digestion of their prey?

oh and i named him gonzo. well a friend came up with it. my balls name is raoul duke. reps to who ever can make the connection with their names.

He is just a high red or red phase normal. Very nice looking. You do not have to raise humidity, but once his eyes clear back up you may want to spray him a few times to aid in the shed. I personally provide a humid hide once the eyes clear up, but that is just me. Two pinks a week is fine.

Hoggie process food really fast, and have some of the stinkiest poo around!

I guess 2 pinkies a week is okay, but it's not what I do. I feed Charon two pinkies every 3rd feeding (the other 2 feedings I give him one at a time).
The venom is thought to be used to aid the consuming of inflating toads. No one knows yet if a Western Hognose gets its venom from birth or from the toads they eat in the wild but there's one way to find out: get a young captive-bred Western that has only eaten mice to bite you (which is pretty hard since the only possible way to get bitten by a Hogger is if you scent yourself) and see if any swelling occurs. You and I might not want to try that, but I'm sure there's someone out there who's willing to try.
About the name: Come on! His nose isn't that weird! It's not even crooked!

You mean they sell those extremely red "pig-faces" for affordable
($100 or less) prices? That's incredible!
About the feces: If you keep your Hogger/s on crushed English walnut shells (which works well as a burrowing substrate and retains heat) the feces will dry after an hour and smell like good-smelling nothing.

Well I can't think of any other reason why a Hogger would be named "Gonzo". The Gonzo I've heard about eats tires to the tune of "Flight of the Bumblebee", loves chickens, and has this weird long nose. Is that the Gonzo you're referring to?

I love his purlple belly. I would name him Pebbles. I used to have and Eastern Hogger but he never ate. I even rubbed lizards and frogs on the pinkie.

We just brought home a 3 year old Western male. He is eating (I am told) one fuzzy mouse f/t every 7 days.

I was thinking of Gonzo from the Muppet Show:rolleyes:

    Awesome snake!
I don't know if the venom helps them digest or just subdue their prey.

I named one of mine hamlet. i thought it was a good name for a hog.
Anyway, it is a normal, but probably a possible het for red phase albino. Normaly when a het, or possible het, are born from a red phase or albino parent they have a very deep red color. I held back two normal possible hets from my high red phase albino breeding project which didn't produce anything. They came out an amazing red color. Both stayed that way for a few sheds and a few months later it was more of a brown, but still has an amazing red.
I think yours might be red phase, which is awesome. They are harder to find than green phase and look nicer (in my opinion). I also am partially color blind and can't tell the difference in the green...
