GFSM, Why Me? Help needed with baby possum
Yep. Any wild thing that needs help somehow finds its way to me. So....... I just took in a baby possum. Thankfully not as young as the woman who found it made it sound, but definitely not ready for life without momma.

Ergo ---> Anyone with direct possum experience, please pm me post-haste. He is around 4 inches and fuzzed out. I have the little guy warm and he took about 2 cc's of similac for me, now he is curled up in a pouch I made for him, sleeping it off. Am currently planning to do the 'every 2 hours' drill with him as per several helpful websites, but could use an experienced voice.

    Cheers,
    Kat

    Kat,

I raised one from the time it could fit in my hand till it went to stay at a local zoo. His name was Tank and he followed me around like a puppy. At the time all I was worried about was making sure he was fed...he was so small that it meant hand feeding....because he was so used to humans he was not able to be released.
    I used this site for a reference...http://www.awrc.org/Baby%20Opossums.htm

Best of luck with him. Feel free to contact me if I can help in any way.

No worries. He was found in a bin at one of the local wineries this morning. He was doing the chching call they usually do for their mommas, to no avail. The winery foreman kept an eye on the little bugger hoping mom would come back, but never happened. The wife called me in a tizzy because he was weak and they had no idea what to do. He's a cute little fuzzbucket, I'll try and get some pics up at next feeding time.

    Cheers,
    Kat

Oh, I forgot to mention and I am not sure if that site mentions that they also need to be manually stimulated to eliminate. I used a damp paper towel and that usually did the trick.

Excellent reference, my friend. Appreciate the hook-up. I already printed it out. I may seek you out in the morning once we survive the first night. :gj:

    Very Funny Jim.... :P

We made it through the night. Sorry for the fuzzy pics, most were taken around 4am. He's perked up a lot now that he's hydrated and has a full belly. I can tell he's going to be trouble when he gets up and going........ :O

Thanks! He got brushed and groomed to get rid of the fleas last night and he's been much perkier today than yesterday. He has the funniest pot belly.

Just how I remember, a big fluff ball with big eyes and ears. Does he do the big scary, be afraid hiss?

I would try and keep your interaction to a minimum if you want a chance of releasing him.

Update: The little man was picked up by the wildlife rehab center here so he is in good hands. Now I can get a nap in.

Thanks for all who offered help and advice.... :gj:

Awww what a cutie! I'm glad he's off to wildlife rehab though. Easier to you and I'm sure they'll deal with him and get him back into the wild when he old enough. Good job, Kat!
