I would definitely not use pine but I don't know if others are safe or not.

No pine and no cedar. Those are the only two I've heard of problems with, but I'm sure if there are more, others will chime in as well...

I would avoid wood all together, as they are hard to clean and steralize. The summer picnic area at walmart has various size bowls that make great hides, and they can be run throuh a dishwasher.

    Ha...HAHAHAHA:8: Those things are jokes!

My friend used one for about two weeks, and after it got pooped on she had to throw it out because it would not clean and took forever to dry. Think about alot of other things people use in bp tanks, thats about the worst excuse ever on the list!;)

Precisely the reason that we don't recommend them, in addition to them being awkward and most keepers buy them way too large. You can't disinfect them well - so they have the same problems as any other wood.

I agree with plastic bowls or kitty litter pans for larger snakes turned into hides.

I would recommend something that is easy to clean and disinfect (to avoid molds and bacteria)

Hides don’t have to be expensive and can be made out of plastic flowerpot saucers, plastic bowls, kitty litter pans etc………all of which are easy to clean and disinfect.

    Here are some ideas http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ighlight=hides

I prefer the giant bowls from walmart over the cat litter boxes. My reasoning is the lip on the cat pans is pretty big and catches all the poo and urates. It is a real pain to clean! You could cut it off, but that is a pain as well. Just a thought.

Here is the "bowl" hide I use for all but the largest of my BP females, and for my large corns. This is a $1.99 bowl from target, I use bigger bowls from Wlamart for the big girls (3000+ g)

I would definitely go with plastic over wood. I've used cat litter pans before. Flip them over and cut out one of the corners. That way the opening is kind of on the top, but also kind of on the side. Another good one to use are plastic flower pot saucers, just put the hole right on the top. With racks however I don't usually bother with a hide. I just wad up an extra piece of newspaper and throw that in, they'll usually wind up under that. That way you don't have to worry about an extra thing to clean.
