Ok so people what do you think?

Ok... I'm on this CRAP monitor, and the colors are all :rage::rage::rage:........

But Just from looking at the design, it seems like it's competing with it's self...

On first glance I would flip the Skink and the Boa... Boa at the same angle as the broken glass part on the left....then the Skink flipped with it's tongue towards P&C (I mean t) And Maybe soften the font a bit?

All in all I like it PC!!~!! :gj:

I think it depends on the use for it? As a banner ad it is kinda fun...for your main website or logo I think a bit much and you might not be taken seriously...just my 2 cents.

Also, what does P & L stand for? (I assume "Patrick Long" but then why have "&" so it reads now "Patrick and Long" ???)

I think the overall design is really good...but I might go with a different font, and the skink kinda throws it off a bit.

I don't think the blurred edges around the sign look very good. I'd also ditch the skink and just stick with the boa.

My girlfriends name is Lydia, so I thought that it went well.

I also thought that just PL reptiles was a bit odd sounding.

I think you're heading in the right direction. I think Laura had good ideas and I also know that when you've got it, you and Lydia will know and will not have to ask for feedback ;)

I get really confused when I look at it... I don't understand what that shape is, and the boa looks just kind of thrown on there... not real sure about the font either. I think it needs to be revised... Trial and error; don't give up!

Hmm, I like the positioning of the boa and skink, but the background (is it broken glass?) does throw the whole image off a bit, and the font is just a teeny bit too flashy. Don't forget, simplicity can still be creative;) On another note, its still WAY better than anything I could come up with, I'm not very original.. Keep at it!

I would change name to PL exotics (patrick long exotics) I would also change up the banner a little bit. Change the font and blend or soften edges a little bit more. Good luck man. So far soo good.

Re: Serious Opinions(ok, and maybe some not so serious)
meh, not that into it. Sorry i took WAY too much graphic design in college so i'm super picky about logos...

the broken effect looks too fake and the reptiles are so real. I'd focus on one or the other, throw out the herps or the glass. I personally would make two versions, a skink version and a snake version and make the herps the focus. I like the font, but not the skewed angle. With logos the simpler and more straightforward it is, the more professional it looks. Is P&L a business or a hobby? If both, what do you wish to convey more, that you are fun or responsible?

Re: Serious Opinions(ok, and maybe some not so serious)
I'd go with a much simpler logo and color scheme. Maybe that would work better if the animals were in gray tones, you chose a different font that was a bit cleaner, and I'd ditch the torn look, kinda cheesy IMO.

I will also have to agree to just call it PL Exotics, unless of course you two are sharing the workload of the "business" or she'll be dealing with customers. If you're the frontman, go with PL not P&L.

Good start bro. You'll get it.

Re: Serious Opinions(ok, and maybe some not so serious)
Cool. My first question is what will your business be? A store front pet shop? Just shows? Out of your closet shipping herps a few at a time? That will determine what kind of logo I would create. Not so much what is your business now, but where do you want to be?

I like it - but I agree that the reptiles look too real and the rest is gray-tones, etc. The font is interesting, but a little too "tough guy, hard rock" for me. Maybe a little less frayed and not so red?

Also, what's up with the broken diagonal biz? I was confused a little, too.

That all being said, I did like it. And I agree with Missi, better than I could come up with! Good luck!

thanx yall for the crits. For the record its not glass, I actually did not inted for it to "be" anything. It is simply a brush stroke copied.

As far as positioning reptiles for photo ops......lets just say, I had to work with what I got :D.

And its not really going to be a "business" I have, and do plan on selling a few animals here and there, but nothing close to being called a "business".

I really do appreciate all the feedback. I wish I could pay some of yall to do somethin crazy for me!

Re: Serious Opinions(ok, and maybe some not so serious)
I agree strongly with what some people have said so far...

McKinsey (Starmom) said you would know when you've got it right.

Also, if it is your business/hobby/thing, then it should be PL, not P&L. If it is to be shared with your gf, then...well... going into business with a gf is not recommended. Even though you say it won't really be a business, you are still going to the trouble of making up a logo, so it isn't nothing.

As far as the actual logo itself, I'm probably revealing way too much of how much I don't know about blue-tongued skinks, but... my first reaction on seeing it was "I had no idea they looked like they have blue goo dripping out of their mouths."

The boa might look really cool if you eliminate its tail so it looks like it is hanging over the sign. Although the coolest part of boas is their tail, so there is a drawback there too.

I think half of the problem with the font is the "copyright" watermark behind it. Makes an already busy font hard to read. So once you eliminate that it might be much better. Also, I don't remember if someone said this, but the pics of the animals stand out so much and the font looks so flat. If there was a little bit of a 3D effect you could do on the font it might balance things.

It's pretty good, but it shouldn't have "Reptiles" at the end because almost everyone uses that word in their company title. Try to get more creative about the name.

It's a start, But I think it needs a bit of tweaking... Curious what kind of design software are you using? I do graphic design for a living....lkm if I can be of any help... ;)

Your focus should more or less be drawn to the center of the image, but you have things competing so your eyes don't know where to look first.

Re: Serious Opinions(ok, and maybe some not so serious)
When you're designing a logo, you really want it to be able to do a few things...

    1) scale well - Most people use vector graphics to accomplish this, but regardless, your logo should scale from icon to billboard without loss of quality, and be adequately legible at a distance (ie. you should be able to recognize a logo on a t-shirt from 20 feet)

    2) minimal colors - If you're planning on having ANYTHING printed (ie. t-shirts, business cards, etc), it needs to look good in 2, or at most a 4 color format.

    3) recognition - You want something that people can identify you with, as opposed to just something as a canvas for your name (this is, of course, unless your logo is your name, and then it's usually the typeface and arrangement that makes it recognizable).

Now, that said, if you're just looking to pop up a website, and don't really care about branding and all that jazz, then it's ok to look amateurish, and the time and money is most likely better put to use somewhere else.
