Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
I have the Reptile Basics 4 tub 32 qt Rack. I am having a major problem with humidity. Its too HIGH!
Temperature inside my house is between 75-79.
Very small water bowls with maybe 1/4 inch water.if that in them.
Unprinted newspaper as substrate.
Using a Herpstat II set at 95.
About 60 holes in the tub total for all 4 sides. I know there are too many holes now because my ambient temps went down.
Water bowls are on the cool side.
Hot side is between 85-90. Cool side between 74-79.
Probe is taped to the flex watt.
Holes are bout 1/4 in holes in side of tub.
This is very frustrating. Any ideas how I could combat my humidity problem? I have tried everything everyone has suggested now I need some other ideas. If anyone with this same rack can chime in or give some other suggestions im all ears.

How high is your humidity? As the Barkers point out in the their book, BP's can tolerate wide wide ranges of humidity.
I have my hot side 90, cool side 80, I have 29 of 1/4" holes and have had no probs with humidity. I think you may be worrying too much. Also, try a fan.

Better yet, what are you using to measure humidity?

Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
accurite thermometer the same ones i use all the time all have fresh batteries. 62,65,70,72 in all four tubs is the humidity. I have no condensation on the walls of the tubs and they are dry when i open them. I just dont wanna cause harm so i am worried.
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
Pull a couple of Acu-Rites and set them up in two places in the room your rack is in. That will give you an idea of what sort of environment your rack exists in. I keep an Acu-Rite permanently on one wall of the BP room to keep an eye on how the room can be affecting my enclosures. :)
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
I will give that a shot and see how things are reading on the opposite side of the room.

Burn more holes in the tub....
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
cant burn anymore the ambient temp is going down, i moved the rack to another side of them room and it seems to be a little better like suggested. it is still a little high but if its under 70 then ill be happy with it and they should too i hope
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
let me back track its still up good lord

1. oil filled space heater to keep ambient temps around 81-82 or your looking at RI's and Vet bills.
2. Burn more holes in tub to get better airflow.
3. I have 9 Reptile basics 32 qt racks, this is what I do and it works for me.
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
The oil filled heater will help keep ambient temps and humidity high. If you want to keep temps high but lower humidity go with a ceramic heater. These dry out the air.

I have these same racks and so I have a couple of thoughts:
-The water bowls need more water in them than 1/4 inch and make sure the bowls are all the way at the front corner of the tub.
-I don't understand why the t'stat is running at 95 while your hot spots range from 85-90. Do you have a temp gun to measure the temps? Anyway, pull the probe just a bit away from the flex watt and then this ought to fix that problem. Also, get a temp gun and accurately measure your hot side temps. I pretty much only use the Accurite to measure the humidity and ambient temps at this point because I don't find them nearly as accurate as a temp gun for surface temps.
-Lastly, tape up some of the side holes (the ones running the long ways down the tubs) and make a couple of the holes in the front and back end of the tub a bit larger than 1/4". The back end will permit more of the heat to escape and the front end will allow more of the water evaporating from the bowl to escape.
Let me know how this works. :)
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
when you say pull the probe just a bit away from the flexwatt do you mean inside the tubs? its directly over the flexwatt in the tubs. the probe for the herpstat is directly taped to the flexwatt.
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
Just an update and an observation. Today my temps and humidity are good. I have had a fan blowing on the rack since yesterday. But I am curious because it has rained here the past 2 days and those days it was humid in the rack. Do you think this is why the humidity was high? Or is it because the fan is on the rack?
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
60-70% was your humidity range? If so, that is a fine range to keep them in. I have the exact same rack at the same humidity range, possibly higher on my end, and all of my snakes are healthy.

I second that.

Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
alright update ive got a fan circulating in the room and its helping the humidity stay down. I just need to get the ambient temps back up now since ive drilled so many damn holes in it its right around 75-77 now for ambient
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
Starmom hit it right on the head. WHERE you put the holes is so much more important than most people think. You need to think about how air moves. If you avoid putting holes in the sides, and have more holes in the hot end than the cool end you will create an air flow which will carry out excess humidity. With holes all the way around the tub the airflow can't happen. Warm air rises so burn warm side holes high on the tub and burn cool side holes lower.
Re: Reptile Bascis 32 qt. 4 tub Rack HELP!
ive been experimenting with them but havent thought of it that way maybe ill give that a shot and see what happens. right now i got the humidity down to 55-60 with a fan circulating but im gonna tape all the holes in the sides and see what happens with that.
