Finally Got One
I have wanted a large python for awhile (but due to having 3 Chihuahua's the wife forbade me from getting a Burm or a Retic - feared it would eat the dogs...lol) so I finally found a Blood that I liked and here he is. He is a Bangka Short Tail. (Comments Welcome)

Thanks so much...He is already starting to show some red and his parents were deep deep red in color so it will be fun to watch him develop his future colors.

Re: Finally Got One
Bangka short tail?
Correct me if I'm wrong but that looks like a python brongersmai. Like what I have.
There's python brongersmai (blood python)
There's python breit (borneo short tail)
And there's python curtus (black blood)
Again I may be mistaken. But that looks like a brongersmai. Good looking animal!

"Bangka red bloods are defined by their pure locality. They are from the island province of Bangka off the east coast of Sumatra. Bangka bloods are known for there deep, dark reds, with amazing color contrasts of black and reds as adults. Keeping this locality pure in breeding programs is essential for their great color expressions." From solarserpents.com
So he is a brongersmai but is a specifically from a secluded island population.

Re: Finally Got One
Ahh gotcha. I think the malaysians are like that too. They're supposed to get real red. And are also the ones where the largest adults are supposed to come from. Of course there's no rules with anything. But that's what I have.
Hopefully she keeps on her track and gets dark!!! I'm a sucker for the real red adults.
Whered you get her?

I got him from Paul Edwards Reptiles (Paul is a great guy to deal with)...I also saw pics of the parents which were deep red/black so he has good genetics helping him get dark ;)

Thanks Everyone...I am really excited about him. I find myself checking on him all the time just to look at him. Can't wait till he is a bit bigger so he can move into a display cage (in a tub right now) :)

He was born Oct. 2006 and his weight today is 1000grams. Is this good for a male of this age? (if not too high/low)
He just took a small rat 3 days ago.
Thanks for any input

I think it's a good weight. You will be able to tell just from the roundness of him in comparison to his whole body. I think my 06 female is around 1200... of course it might be 1300 now. I'm so horrible at remembering!

Re: Finally Got One
I forgot to mention, mine are Sumatran short tailed's. Not brongersmai. I have no idea if brongersmai grow faster.
-
Re: Finally Got One
Yeah mines a malaysian brongersmai. He had a little bit of flabby skin a while back. And I upped his food a tiny bit. And it went away. No prominent spine. And not fat. Just thick.

He is nice and round though seems a little boney (can feel his spine and see a slight ridge)...think I will up his feedings for a few weeks just to fill him out.

Re: Finally Got One
Yes that's right. 3400 grams. He was taking smalls when I got him. 2 a week. And he's now on medium to largish medium rats. He could handle much more. But I don't want to powerfeed him.
Look at snakey68's 3 year old male. He's like 5-6 feet long and over 20 pounds. So they get big.

My girl and boys spine are prominent but not skinny and far out there. I could be horribly wrong about this considering it's what I've been going off of for a long time, but I'm sure you want to be able to see the spine unlike BP's.
I'll have to do some double checking now that I'm doubting myself. I'm always worried about mine turning into those HUMONGOUS giant sausage snakes everyone always so proudly posts on forums. I think it's sorta disgusting they let the animal get so fat. With such aggressive feeding responses, I sometimes wonder myself if I'm not feeding my girl enough... but she's doing well so far and looks healthy. I'd rather her grow slow and develop well with no huge fat stores than turn into a sausage snake.
I absolutely love this picture from redpython.net, BC's site. I think it is a FANTASTIC example of the body your should aim for with these snakes, especially when they get so fat so easily.

I know they can get big...just 2400 grams difference between yours and mine seems a lot (at relatively the same age - so I was wondering where the happy medium is - is yours too big or mine too small?)

Re: Finally Got One
Well I wouldn't say either is right. Genetics play a role in everything of course. I plan my feedings around the info I find on here, bloodpythons.net, and other forums. I just get an average.
For the most part the adults get fed a large or jumbo rat once every 10-14 days.
Year old bloods should be close to if not already eating medium rats.
And up until they're a year old you can feed em enough each week to leave a noticeable lump every 7 days. Then back off at the year old mark.
Kara from NERD said her breeder females in the 12 to 15 pound range eat large medium to small large rats.
I just bumped my guy up to his medium to medium large medium rats if that makes sense. He'll stay on that for a few months. Then he'll get a large or jumbo every 2 weeks.
When I got him from Allison he was almost a year old I think and he was already like 1500 grams if not more. Just for perspective.
And right now stretched out he's about as big around as a coke can and 4 feet long.
There's a 4 foot female blood on kingsnake that's 12 pounds. And that thing just looks crazy obese.
Just a lot of random info I know. I'm sorry.

Don't apologize...I appreciate any and all info. We see the genetics issue too in Balls....so I am used to it. It just seemed 2400 grams was a lot of difference...but then I thought yours and mine were close in age but it sounds like your is older so it makes more sense they would be so far apart.
Thanks again

Nice one! I love his face :)

Re: Finally Got One
congrats he is very nice, he is a chunky wee fella.
I am gonna get some pics of my male and female up in the next couple of days and I will weigh them again the last time the male was close to 30Ibs and is about 5 and half feet long.

Re: Finally Got One
Well dont worry my blood is about 8 or 9 months old and only about 400 i think Im guessing but last time he was weighed he was like 350
maybe I am not feeding enough? I feed 2 adult mice a week. this week I just got one since he was in shed I wasn suure if he would eat didnt wanna waste the money on 2.
