    First Clutch of 08
Well, this girl is 4 days overdue (well actually 3 years overdue). We got this 7 year old girl almost four years ago, and she finally decided that she was ready to breed this year. Believe it or not, I bought this girl with one other, and the guy shipped them to me through the USPS. They were in the box for 48 hours, and were covered in mites. It has been a long road, but she finally acclimated.

She laid 8 beautiful eggs that weighed in 816.2 grams. She was bred by our original Spider male. Here's too a nice bunch of Spiders.

I actually had palpated 8 follicles, but when I pulled the girl, she was only on 7 eggs. So, in the pic, she is only coiled on 7 eggs. One egg was very soft and somewhat waxy. Dumb me didn't realize that she had just laid it. Well, I pulled her (and forgot to check her for more eggs) and put her in another tub so that I could check the eggs and set them up. I went inside to the incubator, and did some work on the computer. Well I went back out to clean her and her tub, and low and behold, she was wrapped around the water bowl with another egg smashed between her and what she believed was her clutch of eggs (the water bowl). Lesson known, but revisited: Check to make sure your female is empty before you put her away.

Here's the pic, sorry for all of my babble.

Thats a good reminder for people to check their females especially since many of us are waiting on our first clutches and until you get back in the flow of things that is something that might get lost in the excitment of getting those first eggs. Thanks for sharing that story as I know it made me make a mental note to make sure I check the girls for any remaing eggs.

Also congrats on the success story with that female. She looks great on that clutch of eggs. It must feel very rewarding to have her produce such a nice clutch of eggs considering the condidtion she was in when you got her. I am sure it was a long road, but I bet she is happy you made the effort for her.

Good luck on the rest of your clutches and I know how you feel on the late clutch thing, my first one is 5 days late but then again she didn't lay till day 45 last year so maybe she is going to make me sweat it again this year.

Congrats on your first clutch of many this season, Tim!

It's a great lesson to a lot of folks that think short cuts are possible. The years you've put into this female, the work, the careful husbandry, the planning are just now paying off in such a wonderful way. I don't think some people realize this is a part of it all so I'm very glad you shared this female's story. :)

Can't wait to see what you and Monica produce this year!

Great job Tim. I hope this is the kick off to a great season:gj:

I know what you mean about waiting. Some people think 1 male, 1 female, make eggs. It's not that easy, many things can can go wrong. I have a het albino girl i was convinced was going last year, well she may be pulling a charade this year too! Just have to be patient and wait till she is ready. God knows I'm ready.

Out of 3 possible albino(1 albino, 2 hets) clutches last year, only one laid, no albinos:(

I am glad this was educational to others, as that was my initial intent. With breeding season just getting into full swing, I thought it would be a great reminder to all.

    Robin,
The egg was probably only in the other tub for about 30 minutes, and it candled great. I was able to find the embryo, and placed it facing up in the egg box with the other eggs. My guess is it will be perfectly fine. However, I will update everyone on the progression of that egg if something starts looking funny.

    Raul,
Great point on the 1 male 1 female aspect. It isn't always that easy. And I feel your pain on the Albino story, as I have been working on them since 04, with nary an Albino yet. My original Het female laid in 06 and took 07 off, even though she was in prime condition. However, she just had her POS yesterday, and has 8 eggs in her. Here's hoping for a few Albinos this year, and I hope you get plenty as well.

    Hey Tim,

Yeah I have been really busy with work, the family, etc. and the wife has been on me about the amount of time (and money) I spend on the snakes :P. So the one place I can cut out is the amount of time is on the boards and making wishlists on Kingsnake. It just seems to be the last thing at the end of the day I have time for.

Anyway, we have 1 clutch of Cinnamon eggs in the incubator (7 eggs). I have another female ovulating now, and one I believe I might have missed. The pied female still has not done anything, but I keep hoping. She is spending a lot of time on her side lately. Pretty much all the females we bred are off feed right now and I have been debating on keeping the males going through them or not.

So how has your season been going? Have you noticed things running a little later than normal this time around?

    Neil,
I fully understand the time thing. I haven't been able to spend as much time on here as I would like. Congrats on the clutch and the other females. It sounds like you are having a good season. My ied female isn't doing anything either. She has bred the Caramel male about 6 times, but no follicles yet (there may still be hope), As for the late season, to my surprise, we seem to be running earlier this year than the last 2 years. We have 1 clutch in the bator, 6 other POS's and about another 11 or 12 ovulations, with another 6-10 that are close to ovulating. So far, I would say the season has been pretty good to me. Good luck on your season this year.

Thats great Tim, maybe its the wierd weather we had here this year, seemed to be colder with fewer warm days and lots of storms moving through. I guess it was kind of that way a lot of places. It could also just be me being impatient;).

Good luck to you to, I can't wait to see your list of clutches from this year.
