    Identify this snake...
So I went to Cypress Gardens yesterday and was walking on this board walk and this little fellow had his head sticking up just being a curious little guy. He wasn't scared or anything, he let me snap a few pictures of him. I'm wondering what kind of snake he is. If he's a venemous snake, then i'm glad I didn't grab him :D

That sounds about right. Very pretty and fast snake. I love how they move around with their heads up like that....very alert.

If you would have grabbed it you probably would have been bitten several times. Racers and whipsnakes do not like being handled ;)

    Hiya!

Yup, as daniel1983 rightly said, it's a Black Racer (Coluber constrictor constrictor)

And it would've struck at you like a banshee if you'd tried to get a hold of it!!! :D

    LOL x2

That's a pretty common response, though... but remember there are only four types of dangerous venomous snakes in the U.S.: Cottonmouths, Copperheads, Coral and Rattlesnakes. Everything else is just cuddly. :D

well if you want to get into the subspecies, it is a southern black racer, Coluber constrictor priapus. the subspecies you gave is the northern black racer.

anyway, for anyone in Florida, here is a great guide to our snakes:
