    My new babies...
    Hey everyone,

I just wanted to post about my new babies I just got yesterday. GILAS! Yaaahhhh! Been wanting these for like 15 years! I got 6 babies from a friend that breeds them yesterday. They are like 7-8 inches long and hatched in November. They are SOOOOOOO MEAN! HAHA

Ashley, they're Gila Monsters from the SouthWestern USA. Rear-fanged, they're one of only two species of vemomous lizards - the other is the Mexican Beaded Lizard.

Gila Monsters dont have fangs, they have grooves in their teeth on the lower jaw that allows the venom to flow into the wound.

Thanks everyone for the positive comments! I really love these guys!

As for a permit, here in Louisiana our venomous restrictions only apply to snakes so we would only need an export permit to ship them outside the U.S.

N4S: Thanks for posting that photo... REALLY NEAT!

    Take care...

Dang, I'm jealous. They are very restrictive with gila permits in California...Bob Applegate is always displaying his gilas at shows, but fat chance on getting a permit, hehe!

Those are just way too cool Sean! I am looking at acquiring some in the very near future from a friend of mine as well.

Did you already get them sexed or are you going to wait till later and have them X-rayed?

Gilas are absolutely amazing lizards. I don't usually have any interest in lizards but they are just beautiful to look at and so fascinating to read about. I had no idea it was possible to own them. Learn something new every day, huh?

I'd love to see more pictures; they look amazing on that black background. what kind of a set up do you have for them? Is it one big display where they're together, or are they divided up? I know nothing about their upkeep, but I'm very impressed by them as a species.

That's probably the most interesting addition I've seen on here in a long time. :D

    Firstly.....WOW!!!! :O - You've just GOTTA love the Gila's!!!

In answer to your question D, as has been said, they excrete their venom through grooves in their teeth on the lower jaw. They can be very quick to bite & have a grip like a pitbull!!! :O

They produce only small quantities of their venom which is neurotoxic and they literally 'chew' it into their prey!

A bite is rarely fatal to humans, but it depends on how you react to the bite...Most common symptoms are pain (obviously), nausea, edema & vomiting.

    - That being said...You still wouldn't wanna be tagged by one!!!

I think I remember reading somewhere that they are actually using Gila venom in medication to help in the management of Type 2 Diabetes amongst others! :gj:
