Why Exactly Are Snakes Weighed In Grams And Not Ounces?

I Googled it and can't find an answer. Everyone says to weigh your snake in grams but since we aren't metric here in the US why is it done in metric? Just curious.

Grams are universal.

It's not just Americans on the web. The whole point of the metric system is to have a standard that everyone can understand. If you have trouble with it, just do a quick google search for a converter.

As far as why it's done. I imagine it's the same reason, as a lot of breeders ship overseas. Even in the USA the metric system is used in medicine, science & technology, and it is starting to make is way into construction and architecture. In my opinion, the USA should get with it and join the rest of the world and adopt the standard.

I was kinda thinking it might have something to do with worldwide trade practices or somethin'. New World Order I guess. I dunno. Here's a nifty online conversion page if anyone is interested...

You can also just use google. 3 lbs to grams, or 1500 grams to lbs (for example) - give it a try! :)

cant you get a closer (more accurate down to the .) number by using grams than using pounds?

Then I take it that if I ever posted the measurements of one of our snakes along with the weight, it should be done in centimeters and grams then. Meters, if it's large enough.

Coz the metric system makes way more sense. Learn a handful of prefixes and the concept of the number 10 :)

Ashley...you can get the exact same figures no matter what you use. I know what you are saying though. The scale we weigh on goes out to .001 ounces.

Humphrey weighs in at a whopping (eh-hum) 4.265 ounces, or 120.91 grams or .2666 pounds or (yawn) 0.1209 kilograms or even .0001 metric or imperial tons. We have a digital scale that can tare the weight out.

So when I'm walking around the floor show of the upcoming reptile expo in Tucson here, "proper herp etiquette" would be... "Yeah, I hear ya. Our Redtail Boa right now weighs in at 581.17 grams and sets out at approximately 104.140 centimeters". Would I be "hip" with that or would he just look at me like I had 692 grams of rocks in my head...?

Because only 2 countries don't use the metric system. The US and Liberia.

Grams are universal and they are an accurate and simple way of expressing weights. It's easier to say 677 grams then 1.493 lbs and rounding would be less accurate.

Ok... anyways for me, I couldnt tell you how big a 43 oz. snake is, but tell me 2000 grams, and I would know exactly. (not that that is at all the same weight, just an example.)

there was talk about america going to the metric system i think its retarded that we havent already half of everything i work with is in the metric system and its alot easier to work with in my opinion

If America were to go metric, just as an example, most machinery would have to upgraded, all tradespeople etc. (or employers) would have to spend hundreds on replacing there whole toolbox with metric tools, I don't think America will ever go metric because of the cost to change everything. Sorry off topic.

They tried in the 60's and 70's but there was much resistance in industries who still use our crap system because of how much it would cost to change. Being lazy and whining about costs, however, is a pathetic excuse not to change. Hopefully we will start making moves toward changing. It's wonderful that the metric system actually makes sense. As noted earlier in this thread, people were disagreeing about how many ounces are in a cup! I don't know, either!

Teaspoons, quarts, inches, feet give me a break. Powers of ten are your friend. I can say my snake weighs 140g or 4.93835 oz. Which makes more sense?

Just as a side note, temperature I think is less silly than the rest of the English system. That doesn't mean we shouldn't join the rest of the world, in that too, though.

In my line of work - Pharmaceuticals - We have always used the metic system for weights and volume...All grams - Kilos - Milliliters - Liters - Ect...

yea thats what in saying i worked in a vet office and all we used was metric one of my friends is a bio chem and all he uses is metric one of my brothers friends is a chemist that cleans out the water that goes to your house to drink they use metric so in all reality we have converted its just not worth the money for the government to put out

Funny. I weigh and records our snakes in grams (well except the burm - you find me a metric bathroom scale for sale in the US) but always convert it into Imperial so I can understand it. =)

I live with an Englishman who begs on me as American still use the Imperial system...so then I ask him if he'd like go down to the pub for a half liter of beer. Usually shuts him up. =)
