    getting my first tub today
I'm kinda excited hehe. Anyway, I know that I'm getting a 15q tub, but there's no WallMart around here so I'm gonna improvise with Costco or Target...any idea where else I can find tubs that will work with snakes?

oh and are there any specific brands that are especially good?

    thanks!

Target, the 15qt Sterilite ClearView tubs are great. They are very clear and run about $4 apiece.

www.sterilite.com and look at Clearview tubs. Find the 15qt and write down the model number(I think it's 1956 or 1756?).

WalMart has the good 41qt sterilite tubs, but Target has the clearview tubs that are easy to see through and have flatter bottoms. The 15qt tubs at Target run $3.99 when not on sale, I think. The 32qt tubs run $6.99 when not on sale. The 41qts at WalMart run $6-something.

Office Max or similar should have the Iris tubs, which are the flattest on the bottom and the most transparent. They are high though, and can be found cheaper at www.reptiletubs.com

We don't have K-Mart or Wallmart around here. I got a 32q sterilite clearview for $7. They didn't have anything smaller..

Anyway, I would think that it could be cheaper at wallmart but $7 isn't that much anyway.

btw so what do I need to do now? Make ventilation holes in it and get something to clip the top to the tub? What's the best to use? Clips like these? http://www.germes-online.com/direct/...nder_Clips.jpg

Those work ok for the small tubs or an 18-24" bungee cord wrapped around the middle works well too. I have 2 of those same tubs in the living room with bungees around them. One has a 2300g female and the other has a 600g male pastel, and neither have tried to escape. It's pretty secure.

Oh and for vent holes, I generally make 6 holes on the short sides and 7-8 holes on the long sides. Humidity stays consistent and isn't too high(generally 55-65%)

I use those clips in the medium size on my tubs that aren't in the racks. I used to use bungie cords but they are a pain in the butt:D I have had no escapes except for a 5' female that I think is stronger than me, She wedges her body against the top and pushes all night long :)

Final question remains: Where is the best place to put the tub? I'm gonna have a UTH heating it but that shouldn't burn anything right? Anything being stuff underneath it along with the tub itself.

put polystyrene under the tub, good insulation keeps the heat in. Also put aluminium tape on the poly for ultimate insulation, works for me.

You mean just the bottom, and around the UTH? I just aluminum taped the UTH onto the tub. Poor Buddy is gonna have to spend another night in the other tank :(

Yep, that's fine. I have my separate tubs just sitting on the carpet on top of the flexwatt. Works well :)

    !

I am working on getting my snake into a tub and I've got my temps perfect - but my humidity is 85%! I know that's too high for her but I can't figure out how to lower it. I made lots of holes but I'm scared if I make too many more too much heat will get out. I'm using cypress as substrate. I know a lot of people use newspaper but I have a ton of the stuff and I don't want it to go to waste...

I do have bungee cords though : D

Okay, so I finally decided to put him in. Here's what the setup looks like:

    http://aycu15.webshots.com/image/500...3018932_rs.jpg

The warm side is constant 89-94ish...usually 92F.

Someone else here said that I don't need a 2nd UTH for the cool side since it will create a nice ambient from the warm side, but it is only 75F there :( oh and how can I bump up the humidity a bit more? its at 40%

Oh and another quick question. It's okay for him not to use the hides right? Since its a tub and he feels more secure in it

Re: getting my first tub today
You can bump up the humidity by taping up a few of the holes. Looks like you put 2 rows on each side, huh? I usually start with less holes and add more if I need the humidity to go down.

You might also try getting a bigger water bowl. Target should sell VanNess plastic crock water dishes that work well. They are deeper and have a bit more surface area. I use 6" ones in that size tub and the humidity is where it should be.

As far as him not using his hides, it's probably the half logs. They aren't too good as far as security. If you have a garden center close by, they should have some of those deep plastic plant saucers(sit under the pot and catch water). Buy 2 of those, cut holes in the sides, and place upside down on each side of the tub. They are round, low to the ground, dark and easy to clean. Plus, they are only around 50 cents apiece :)

If he eats after a week of settling in, then he's probably fine. If he doesn't, then I would find some different hides. I have some that don't use their hides and others that LOVE their hides. Depends on the snake.

As far as 75 degrees on the cool side, I would get a 2nd UTH. If you can get another 11" x 12" piece of wired flexwatt, plug it into a dimmer, and then plug it into your thermostat, it should work very well.

Your thermostat probe isn't in the tub, is it? Not very safe, especially if water gets spilled on it(probe gets cooler and tells the thermostat to heat up, possibly too hot).

Re: getting my first tub today
Yea thermostat probe is in the tub. That's the only way I can get constant temp in there, otherwise it fluctuates.

He's been using those two hides for over 6 months now without a problem. I just thought he felt safer in the tub hehe.

Regarding holes..there are four on the short side and six on the long sides. I didn't make too many thinking exactly like you.. Humidity is at 34% right now :( I def need the bigger water bowl.

Oh and I just checked and he's in the warmer ends hide :) In the morning he was in the cooler end's corner
