What kind of boa for this tank size?
I've owned a corn snake for 8 years now, and I'm finally getting the itch to get another snake (I've been pacifying myself with eels). This time I want something with more mass to it, though.

I have space for a 3'x2' tank, and the height is not limited. I've been researching for about a month trying to find good options, but now I need some help. So far I know I can keep a ball python or a green tree python in a tank that size, but are there any boas?

I'm really attracted to the hog island boas due to their smaller size. Would a male be an option? I love the shapes of these heavier snakes.

Any other suggestions are welcome. I have a few more months of research to go, probably, before getting anything.

Okey dokes....So you want a heavy bodied but not too large boa????....Hhhhhmmmm??????

Have you thought about a Viper Boa ([I]Candoia aspera aspera)???

They are a very robust species, with a typical "arrow" shape to their heads & keeled scales..Gorgeous! - Only problem is, they are VERY hard to come by as C.B! :(

Another is the Soloman Island Boa (Candoia paulsoni paulsoni) - Which is very similar in appearance to the aspera!

Both are stunning....But where-as the aspera will be fine in that size enclosure into adulthood, the paulsoni will eventually need something larger!

Both are pretty much terrestrial (ground dwelling), so height will not really matter too much on the viv.

If you wanted something more arboreal, to make use of the height available....How about an amazon tree boa???

Not a heavy bodied snake...But still lovely!

    Here's a good site....http://www.boakingdom.com/

    Hope that helps a bit!!??

    Steve. ;)

I'd say even a male Dumerils could live in a tank that size.

Maybe a young male, but I personally wouldn't go any smaller than 4'x2'x2' for an adult! ;)

    I think that just about any BCI or BCC is going to get way too large for that ground space...this is another good link with size info... { product bye our very own Jimmy! ;}

You may want to take into account aggression and your handling abilities before looking at purchasing something like a green tree python. I have heard they can be very docile, and also very aggressive. Not trying to discourage you, but its more than just picking something that is the right size;)

Two smaller boas I am familiar with are the Hog Islands and the Peruvian long-taileds. Both of these species normally max out at around 6 feet long, which would be appropriate for a 3-foot long cage. I'm willing to bet they would like a good two feet of height as well. Also, you may want to research the Rainbow boas as well as the emerald tree boas, which are similar to the green tree pythons.

So D what are the recommended BCI-BCC stats? 1 ft. of cage per 2 ft of snake?

    PS...I vote Rainbow! ;)

For that size tank.........I would get a Kenyan sand boa or two......make an artificial rock background...fill that tank with about 4-5" of sandish substrate......that would be wicked cool....

Rainbow boa sounds like a good one for that cage size and they aren't extremely hard to take care of either. With some good old-fashioned patience they can become quite handleable. I vote Rainbow!

I believe I am mixing up emerald tree boas and green tree pythons, and since I do not know the major differences, I will just say what I was trying to emphasize is that you may want to get a good feel for the different behaviors of the snakes you are looking at to help you chose. Good luck with your project!

I understand that if I get a green tree python, it would be a display animal. I don't mind if I end up with something I can handle or something that is best just to look at because it's too fragile like the young tree pythons, or too aggressive. My big hobby is fish keeping, and you can't handle those either :]. Some of them actively try to attack me, so I've grown to be quick lol. Not being able to "play" with the animal is not a negative for me. Maintenance could get interesting, though. I'd probably invest in a snake hook if I get an aggressive one.

Rainbow boas are actually one of my very favorite snakes, but I thought they would get too big. It's great to hear that they are an option!

When CB viper boas are available, what do they normally cost? I probably only have 300 or so to spend on the snake. If CB ones are rare, I worry it could be too expensive, though they are very cool looking.

I'm not too keen on the Kenyan sand boas... They look too wormy for me or something, unfortunately.

I think I'll stay away from the emerald tree boa because it looks similar enough to the green tree python, but it has bigger teeth to bite me with :D. The requirements between those two snakes are similar enough, right? I've really only researched the python.

    So options include:
    green tree python
    emerald tree boa
    rainbow boa
    viper boa
    Kenyan sand boa

There was some disagreement on whether the Hog Island boas and Peruvian Long Tailed boas would be OK. Are these in or not?

In all honesty, my breeder male BCI's (colombian, hogg, dumeril) are all in 30"x22"x7" enclosures. I don't use hides though, with hides you may need more room than that for them. I'd go with a nice male Rainbow Boa or possibly a male Hog Island.

You know... I think I've decided on the rainbow boa. They're a snake I've always wanted, and even though they aren't that thick, they're nothing short of beautiful.

So some questions- I'm reading care sheets and personal experiences, but these are more specific. Do acrylic tanks hold in humidity better than glass, and would it work all right? Or should I just get a large plastic tub? Also, with the size of the enclosure, does it matter if I get a male or female?

Many boa (or any other snake) keepers would agree a 6 foot snake can be housed comfortably in a cage with a 3' x 2' base. The height of the cage would vary depending on the species of snake. An 8 foot snake could live in a cage with a 4' x 2' base, etc, ect... As the size of the snake increases, the base of the enclosure should increase, and you could go for cages that are 3' deep instead of 2'.
