Boa question???
ok so im going to be getting my first boa and i have 3 options. Could you boa owners please help me deciede.
Option 1.) Buy my boa (hopefully an 08 or late 07 i want a baby) on April 5th at the All-Ohio Reptile Expo bring him back to my college Dorm where i can provide a 30g tank for him. June 13th i will be out of school and at home can provide the right size for him.
Option 2.) Buy my boa on May 17th same place and house him in th 30g untill June 13th.
Option 3.) wait till June 17th when im back home and buy my boa then?
Option 1 is what i would like, just cause i already cant wait any longer. But i want to be responsible and make sure my boa has everything it needs...my question is in those 2 months do you think he will be ok in a 30g which the dimensions are roughly 24x12x18. or will he quickly out grow that? in that case would option 2 be ok he would only be in it for a month before i went back and could supply him with a bigger house?
p.s. i already have a vet lined up and the funds, its just space
Thank You Guys
Zack

Re: Boa question???
If you buy a baby, a thirty gal would almost be overkill for a few months, just MY OPINION

if overkill? then what size of enclosures should i have for boa as they grow? should i contiunally upgrade or just but that 6 footer after he grows a little
-
Re: Boa question???
If you put a young snake (mainly any snake) in an enclosure that is too large, they may get stressed very easily and MAY not eat. It is better to get the appropriate size tank and upgrade when needed, then to get a huge tank, and wait for the snake to grow into it. Im sure you will find that most people feel that way.

Re: Boa question???
I have young Nicaraguan boas in 12 and 15 qt containers in a rack.
-
Re: Boa question???
A baby up to about 30" would be fine for two months in a tank half the size of the one you have now.
Look for Gary and John at the show, they have good snakes and are good guys. I can't think of what they call their business but you can find them here www.thereptileroom.org.
Gary owns the site and John is his brother. Shoot either of them a pm or email and they'll even let you know what they have before the show.
Hey Pattimus, how do baby boas in the wild avoid stressing out with all that forest around them?
LOL

Wes, you didnt know, the snake stork keeps them all cozy untill they are about 3 feet then they let them go

Re: Boa question???
I will tend to agree with "Patty Cakes" (why would you give yourself a name like that? lol). I gradually upgrade the Boa's homes in four stages for girls and three stages for boys. They start out in shoe box size containers (you can skip this step), and then they go to to about a 30 qt tub, then on to about a 40 qt, and then the females will get moved up to a 421d when they are reaching breeding size. Hope this helps!
If you really want a boa now, and think you can care for it and eventually move it to your new place, then go for it. Boas are great and shows are nice way to shop the market all in one conveniently located place. Have fun shopping!

Re: Boa question???
Yikes! I have my boa, born September 2007, in an RBI 2x3 cage. She eats, drinks, poos and pees, and sheds perfectly! She is also very okay now with being held and taken out of and put back into her cage!! I guess mine's not too big for her....or I just lucked out!!! :P

Haha, just because my way works for me or a few others, doesn't make it the only right way to do things. :gj:

I have never been to a show (living in Oregon) so I have not ever shopped at a show. So, my question: Does shopping at shows leave the buyer with a stressed out snake that has also been exposed to all kinds of germs and illnesses? Just wondering.....

From a respectable breeder, germs and illnesses wouldn't be an issue, but the stress from being at the show, being passed around, gawked at, may cause stress.

Oh good grief!! :( Jimi's way or NO WAY???? :O Heck, had I known Jimi's way I might have been able to hold Zelda sooner! :D Probably, this is dependent also on the personality of snake~ while Zelda can't wait until 'Link' gets here to save the day, she seems quite in charge of her surroundings! ;)

Re: Boa question???
shows are a good way to pick up mites and stuff if you're not careful. But that's what hand sanitizer is for.

Just be smart.
Keep your eyes open, look at the snake carefully. How many other snakes are on the table? Do you recognize the name?
Like I said, If they are a respectable business person, you most likely will not find little critters and buggies.

Re: Boa question???
Wes, Thanks bro!
Like said look at the animal before purchase.
I personally use Provent a Mite on all displays and cloth I put down on my table. I can not even have Tarantulas on my table unless I bring a clean table cloth and use it on a seperate table lol. I also use Black Knight II now.
If you want eddyhead, you can come and see me at the show. I can introduce you to 95% of the vendors there. Even if I do not have something you like I am sure I can help you choose a healthy animal at the show. That is not a problem at all. Just remember if you do not see something you like there is no reason to buy. The show is monthly and baby season is right around the corner lol.
Thanks again Wes!!!

Re: Boa question???
In my years I have purchased dozens of snakes at shows and have NEVER picked up mites. I honestly think saying that shows are a way to "pick up mites" is flat out irresponsible and reckless behavior. Most breeders that do shows are top notch and willing to invest significant money to do so. They value their animals and really have a huge interest in doing things the right way sure as hell a lot more then typical pet shops (most of whom are negligent beyond words).
Again I find the statement that shows are a "good way to pick up mites" to be both RECKLESS and IRRESPONSIBLE and if I were a breeder that sold at shows would consider it "liable" (look that up in a legal dictionary).
On the size of enclosure issue a 30 gal is fine for a young boa and will probably be fine for 18 months - 24 months depending on feeding schedules and sub species.
-
Re: Boa question???
i've picked up snakes with mites at a show, so I don't know how you consider me saying that reckless and irresponsible. Clearly you're not considering the importers that are at shows.
and for the record Jack, it's libel.

Sounds like a modern version of "do not cast your pearls among swine", wise words Pat but I am sorry I hate statements that DAMAGE the reputations of breeders that work hard. qiksilver's statement of
"i've picked up snakes with mites at a show, so I don't know how you consider me saying that reckless and irresponsible."
is about as valid as a person saying that
"i've picked up herpes on a date, so I don't know how you consider me saying that dates are a great way to get VD is reckless and irresponsible".
It just plain pi$$es me of for a person to damage the business of professionals that work very hard to do a good job and take great care of their animals as MOST breeders that exhibit at shows do.

"You need to get out more often Bro. Dates aint what they used to be.. Hell, Even "nice boys/girls" can be dangerous nowadays"
Words have power you need to be careful of how you generalize things,

Re: Boa question???
It's ruining no reputations, no one was implicated personally as having mites in their collections. Therefore no harm no foul. It was merely a precautionary word to be careful at shows, what's all the fuss? I've seen what I've seen, and that's what I'm commenting on, so don't tell me my own opinion.

Cool bro. If you are interested in Nic Boas my Buddy Carl Aiken, He has some sweet Nics! A bit smaller then Columbians. Well ok they are a lot smaller lol. But still a sweet snake. If My Buddies clutch has dropped Mike Novy might be there with some sweet boas too. Not sure if he will have any normals but we will see. No worries at all. We will see if there is a quality animal that you like there. And just go from there.
Look forward to meeting you! It will be a blast at the show.

Well you know how things are today everyone is fricken sensitive, and politically correct. God forbid people should actually say what they think and toss in some sarcasm for effect, :O NO WAY God forbid the sky may fall, :tears:.
I really wish I could post here what Jas sent me by PM it was fricken hysterical. Yet if I did, the thunder of the mighty moderators would smite us all.

Because our nation is rapidly moving from a capitalist republic to a socialist judiciary. We just can't let anyone be offended anymore but if you want a laugh PM me and I will tell you what Jas said to me by PM. It will give you a laugh and explain the why behind the PC necessity that all former bastions on free speech seem to be destined to destroy themselves with.

Don't let them. At the very least you are going to be able to look around and decide who you will get the little guy from. Grab a can of provent-a-mite while you're there and you'll most likely be fine. Just make you sure you know who you are buying off from is all.
