    Need Help Fast!
[need for speed is due to the fact that i have an ebay bid waiting]

Kay. I have decided to invest in a digital thermometer/hygrometer combo (from of course the wonderful ebay) and I was just wondering if this particulary item {Item is in link below} is suitable to put in my snakes cage, on the bottom where he will be able to touch it. I am not sure if for some weird reason that he should not make direct contact with it/

    Hi,

I don't see any mention of a probe to read temps at the other end of the tank or doesn't that bother you?

    Hi,

Also looking at the shipping wouldn't you be cheaper walking to walmart or lowes etc and picking up the acu-rite that does have the probe etc and costs (apparently) $12?

Just my 4c (exchange rates are great).

doesnt bother me.. as long as it can get a temp on the warm side, due to the fact tha me ball spends most of the time there anyway, i can just stick with the dial thermometer/hydrogeter for the cold side

    Hi,

Yeah but you want to be able to read the temperatures inside his hides - a pain in the sit-upons with a base unit but easy-peasy with a probe.:)

    Hi,

Well it only uses a 1.5 volt battery for power so the only real safety issue is to the thermometer I think as long as it is fixed correctly.

If it gets P'd on or dunked in the water bowl it is probably a goner.

You could try fixing it to the side with velcro - or a hot glue gun holding the velcro on to make sure there is nothing the snake can get stuck too but you can remove the unit easily for cleaning.

You could use the glue gun to hold the thermometer but that might be annoying in the long run.

    Main things to remember;

It's nice to be able to read at different points of the tank easily (hence the probe idea).

At some point the snake is likely to try and climb/sit/P on it.:taz:

    No Tape inside the tank.:colbert:

Lol... what for? Just velcro it to the side.

Like dr del said, an acurite thermometer would be a much better choice. Regardless of what the website says, Lowes carries them in the gardening center, and Wal-Mart carries them also.

An availability checker is on that page.

    Hi,

Just to point out if you do that the humidity certainly wouldn't work accurately and I can't say I would be all that confident of the temperature either. :)

Okay, Humphrey's tank has a similar device. It's an Oregon Scientific and on the warm side I have it just above the substrate and is held in place by 3M Velcro. It transmits digitally the temp and humidity every 45 seconds to my nightstand along with another remote sensor at the cool end of the tank.

Drawback - Humphrey loves to get off the bottom of the tank at night and cruise above hence ALWAYS knocking the sensor off the Velcro - which of course means re-attaching it each time. It does work though. But for less obtrusive looks and maintenance I would suggest the following...

On the Suriname Redtail's tank and the wifey's scorpion tank we have them monitored by Exo-Terra's. The scorp has just one temp and humidity and the redtail two temps and one humidity. The Exo's deliver and constant digital read out and the temp probe heads are really small - about a third of the diameter of a pencil. The actual unit itself is small too and fits right into the canopy it is made for and also displays low and max temps and humidity. The best place for prices on these that is HALF what Petsmart or the like carries them for is retilesupply.com. They are pretty hard to beat!

Whatever you go with like noted before NO TAPE IN TANKS!
