Another one... or did I miss it?
Proposals coming out of the wood work. Totally nuts. I could have missed this one being posted but I don't know.

Has anyone reminded our goverment that the economy is slow, housing markets are way down, the dollar is a joke overseas, gas prices are at record highs and we are involved in a full scale war in Iraq?....Why aren't they concerned with those things and leave the pet industry alone? :salute:

Specifically prohibited reptile species include: all reptiles that are venomous by nature as determined by
department rule, including but not limited to Burmese python, reticulated python, African rock python,
green anaconda, yellow anaconda, Indian python, Asiatic monitor, Nile monitor, white throat monitor,
black throat monitor, and crocodile monitor, and any hybrids thereof.
In reality unless you have any of these... you have nothing to worry about....

but im going to be real p/o'ed if they try and pull this junk in Florida... again..... lol

Not just the reptiles but the birds as well. It's just foolish.

I'm confused... It says "All reptiles that are venomous... including but not limited to burms, retics, afrocks, etc." but none of what they listed is actually venomous. Sounds like this is another bill written by non-herpers trying to control what they don't understand.

absolutely ridiculous! if they want pet/animal issues to focus on, they should focus on the puppy mills!

I do think you have something to worry about even if you don't have these species or live in Florida.

When laws are passed by those that don't even understand a species or the pet trade/hobbyist/businesses that are involved with it - it can and will affect us all eventually. Also as a community I think we need to stand up for each other's rights or we won't have a voice big enough to be heard.

I think *everyone* should be really worried, and I don't just mean people who keep herps. First of all, according to the article, the way the law is written, even though it mentions some specific species, it would make it illegal to own all birds and reptiles as pets. A very significant percentage of the population has owned at least one bird or reptile in their life. Any law that would turn that many people into law-breakers has something seriously wrong with it.

But even assuming the wording is changed to only include those that are specifically mentioned, you better be worried! I mean, this law specifically mentions "parrots, parakeets, finches, doves and pigeons, and canaries". That is almost every pet bird there is. Most people like birds. I've never heard of anyone thinking birds are inherently evil. Or thinking if someone owns a bird it must mean they are a devil worshipper. And it is for an entire state!

If they pass that, how long do you think it will be before they pass a law that specifically outlaws "pythons, boas, and colubrids"?
