afraid my recent pastel purchase may be less then i barganed for

First, let me say that I do not know how to sex a snake.

Picked up a pastel female at the local pet shop the other day. she is beautiful.

After watching the 8 ball popping video, I gave it a shot. I think I am just afraid to squeeze to hard.. but i was unable to get anything to come out on my larger snakes... including 2 that I know are males from being probed.

Anyhoo.. I tried to do it to my new pastel, and with little effort a red stringy lookng thing popped out on one side. it was about centemeter long, and was "erect" I assume that this means my beautiful new female pastel is actually a male?

anything you can share would be a big help. I will make an appointment in the near future to get my entire collection probed by a vet.

How much did you pay for it? From your description it sounds like a male to me. Are you rolling your thumb toward the cloaca, or are you trying to push it by sliding? I always found that rolling your thumb works very well. From what I have seen, some of the larger males can be harder to pop than babies are, so its not as reliable, but if you try a few times you may get it... Also, I'm not a pro like some of these other guys are, so wait until they comment to take my advice seriously :P

It was a good deal none the less... It was sold tho as definately being a female.

Well if it turns out to be a male i hope you only paid $50 for it ;).If it turns out to be a male instead of the female as it was sold to you take it back or get some money returned.

Mike, if you have concerns about it being mis-sexed and they guaranteed it as female (hopefully you got that on paper or on the receipt) you should likely inform them immediately. Most retail places have a limited return time and reason so you want to inform them ASAP. Also if it requires a vet cost to confirm gender, I should think they should have to cover that or replace the snake with a female that they sex right in front of you. I'd be on the phone with the store manager as soon as they open their doors tomorrow.

Finding a vet that "knows" one end of a snake from the other is also important, some don't. If it came to that, I'd be doing some inquiring around the herp community in your area about a reputable vet/s that have experience with reptiles.

I like Ralphs video of popping better then the 8 ball one. I use his rolling method when popping.

Ralphs video is awsome! After watching Adams video I tried popping my snakes that were male but there was 1 that I could get but after watching Ralphs I popped that male on the first try!

If you aren't sure, find someone who will be. Maybe a local breeder?

I plan to take all my snakes to a vet this weekend to have them sexed. Luckily we have a vet here that is known to be great with reptiles.

I plan to call the reptile shop tommorow (they were closed today). I will tell him that I belive it is a male, but will know for sure when it is sexed on Saturday....

Fact is, even tho he doesn't fit in my breeding plans, we really like him. he is beautiful, acts perfectly, has already shed, and eats like a champ. He has the best looking eyes I have seen so far.... BUT, it was my intent to spent $200 on a FEMALE that fit my breeding plans!!! :8: I already have an 1100 gram 2006 Graziani male pastel!

So, in my situation, what would you do? I know it is up to me, but I am really struggling here.

i would just see what the shop says, maybe they will refund you or something, i personally would put the money toward a female you really like...
but thats me...

Popping is easier than it look's, I was super scared when I first started once you learn it's awesome and easy to do. I hope that shop gives you some type of refund they probably got duped themselves.

wow, 200 is alot for any pastel IMO...

I think for a nice pastel Female, 200 is not a high price at all. Nerd still sells lemons for 500.

For a nice female 200 is not much at all. I paid over 200 for all of my pastel girls.

agreed all of my females were over $200.

I meant to say "I" ... i have seen some nice pastels out there that were very pricey but for me...

Ralphs video was so funny

just tried to pop her again to get a better look.. i am still unsure. I think it is time to leave the poor girl / guy alone, and just see what the vet says!!!! :)

What a fantastic idea!!! LOL, would have thought of that one AFTER I left the vets office! Will Do!!!

Could have been the scent gland?... i always figured the hemipenes were unmistakable. :P

trust me. If it is possible to screw up something simple up... I will probably end up doing it!!!

My popping results are not difinitve.... at all. there is one little red thing that pops out... but it doesn't pop out very far, and only one of them pops out. I have been looking at pictures left and right... and it looks like one picture of a scent gland gland in a female.... in another pic it looks like boy parts. I tried to take a picture, but it was too small for me to get a good shot of. Bottom line is, I don't know what the hell i am doing!

Right now my plan is to leave the poor baby, and her / his butt hole alone.... and let the vet sort things out!

I would almost rather have a male (or both, haha). I can then breed my male to all my normal ladies...badda-bing! I have both, so it's not a biggie. If it was that good a deal, go grab a real lady and call it a day...

I'd first call the store that sold you the animal and tell them it's a male and ask them what they'd like to do to remedy the problem. If they're gonna be tools about the gender (i.e., they don't trust you), then get them to pay for a vet visit for a certifiable sexing. Hopefully the store will be cool and ask you what you want (partial refund from what you are saying since you really like the snake). =)

If you apply pressure evenly you can get both to pop out. But undoubtly thats a boy.

hahaha... this is hilarious... Unfortunatley it is a male, or at least I would say that it is a male, so it's not that funny that you didn't get what you paid for. But not everyone is perfect, especially when it comes to sexing a snake.

Bottom line. It is either a tiny pene (gasp) or a giant set of.... scent glands. I will let the vet sort it out. Hopefully it is a pair of big ones, not a little tiny pene.
