Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
Some of my wifes co workers were taking a walk and found this dude walking down the street (in an industrial area) so they grabbed him and brought her to my wife knowing I was a reptile guy. It looks like a female and I am not sure but think this is a California desert tortoise which is not from our area but much further inland in the desert. If anyone else knows what other species she may be please post your thoughts. I am only familiar with sulcatas and leopard tortoises. I will be seeing my vet soon to check for parasites but otherwise asides from a really scratched and dinged up shell and belly, she seems to be fine. She definately has been traveling alot on pavement from her condition and I think she will enjoy living on the grass in my back yard . Thanks in advance for any info on our new addition.

Re: Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
Sure thats not a really old box turtle? She looks to be old and pretty small for a desert tort.
Re: Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
The pic where she is winking is adorable!! :)

This is a better picture of a tort, that i think looks like yours! awesome find!
Re: Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
It's a russian tortoise. Care is pretty much the same as for our Ca. Tortoises.
If it's a boy, and it sort of does, it's full grown. If it's a girl it's almost full grown.
You can see them in most Petcos and Pet Smarts this time of year.
Re: Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
Sure looks like a russian. It could be a desert tort or someone's cast off russian.
Re: Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
It does not look russian to me! LOL

Look at the vertabrals on the russian. I see no similarity!
Re: Rescue Tortoise, California Desert?
I dont know Pat, I'm kinda leaning towards the Russian. His coloration is horrible due to many scratches and dirt but his size and shape is similar to Russians.
On the other hand he hissed at my wife last night when she picked up his hide to look at him and I know that Cali's do that.
Do Russians also hiss?
He really likes being in a pen with a hide so I feel that he is a captive release.
I called my vet and he said if he appears healthy now keep him in quarrantine and bring him in when I have a fecal sample and we will see if he has any parasites.
Thanks everyone for all the responses and well wishes. This is my second rescued animal in almost about a month and although they are not stand out morphs like most of my animals, it feels good to give back something to these amazing animals that have given me so much.
I'm hoping the snakes Gods will look kindly on my actions and bless me with some great clutches this year:snake::gj:
