Goodbye Barney
We had just taken Barney to the vet and got a clean bill of health on him . He went into a rapid decline and died yesterday. No warning or sign of respitory problems. We had our furnace break down twice while we were at work recently and came home the one day to 41 degrees in the house. For a couple weeks it appeared everyone came thru unscathed. No sure if the issue was the furnace , but we took extra care on all his needs. We are heartbroken. I won't ever get another hatchling. He was so delicate he worried me constantly. He was our baby boy.

Oh sweetie, you have had such a rough year. I am so sorry for your loss.

Re: Goodbye Barney
Sorry to hear about your loss. I had found a russian tortoise two years ago at the start of winter. I think he was a pet that someone released, or had escaped. He had a pretty serious resperatory infection. I tried everything I could to bring him back to health, including vet visits, with no luck. Tortoises are probably one of my favorite critters and I had become pretty attached to the little guy in just the little while I had him.

Re: Goodbye Barney
We rescued a 3 toed last year that had to have surgery. I didn't expect her to make it. She's doing fine. But we didn't see any problems with Barney though!:(

I'm at work right now, but I believe it was the zoo med uvb 5.0
If hatchlings are illegal, why do the major shows sell them?? He was purchased at the expo in chicago.

Thanks again, We had a brand new furnace, but come to find out, all the construction on the house we did caused massive amounts of plaster dust to clog the motor.

Re: Goodbye Barney
Really the law is more inforced in pet stores, its not illegal to buy them, just to sell them. Any turtle/tort under four inch's cannot be sold unless if it for scientific purposes and a few other things. Looking it up will go into deeper details, I'm off to bed before i start to jumble up my words.:)
Also, the bulb you were using is fine, i just wanted to check. Improper uvb is one of the leading causes of death in small turtles and torts.

Oh no I am SO sorry about your loss. I know how much Barney meant to you and I totally feel your pain. :(
BD, the law that banned the sale of turtles and tortoises under 4" was lifted last spring.

As far as I know this ONLY applies to water turtles and has never been applied to tortoises. Different states, cities and even counties have enacted their own rules and regulations now.
You can simply tell any seller at a show you are using it for educational purposes and purchase any size water turtle you want.
The original ban was to protect kids from getting salmonella, which is easy to get from poopy water.
Tortoise hatchlings are really quite easy to keep if you meet their lighting, heating and dietary requirements.

I can't believe we were so careful and lost him! It amazes me that we can drag in torts that are at deaths door and with care they thrive. Here we had him vet checked and even with the furnace down he had his basking light on and this happens. We were so excited when we got him. We had even kept him quarantined all this time because of him being so young. If we get another tort, it will have to be at least a yearling. We get too attached. When we took Daisy in, knowing she was sick and spent so much on her surgery people looked at us like we've lost our minds. But she is very active now and enjoys life. She was scared to death when we got her, now nothing bothers her. Sorry about the long post, just wanted to get my feelings out.

Re: Goodbye Barney
I know what you mean. These cute and personable tortoises can totally tug at our heartstrings! Sometimes even though you do every possible thing right and there are no signs of anything wrong at all it just doesn't work out, which is so hard to understand. Daisy is certainly very lucky to have you as are the rest of your torts!

Re: Goodbye Barney
Wow really... i haven't kept turtles in years so i haven't been keeping an update on them, thanks:)
Blu, it really could have been anything that made him died, do you know if he was wc or ch?

I know I did my best. I don't blame myself, but I will start with older torts in the future. I was worried about him even when he was doing great. He was so delicate and tiny. Next time I'll let someone else worry over the babies.

Re: Goodbye Barney
I am so sorry for your loss. I have a leopard and he is the coolest, i would be very sad to loose him.
Unfortunately with any baby animal not all survive and that age is the critical time if they will make it or not.
