ever sold a het as a normal?

I was wondering how common it is for someone to sell off hets and possible hets as normals? I know that I had a friend that before he moved he sold his collection off as normals. and he had a bunch of het albinos and poss het clowns. I was just wondering if any of you have done it.

Yes, And I still do.. Males mostly..

the breeder we work with on a regular basis does all the time.. as jasballs said, mostly males. its hard to sell a het for ________ to general public. impossible to prove which is poss het and which is normal though, thats the most common reason as far as i know

I'll sell possible het males at normal male prices.

I have from this year.

I got 2 66% poss het Albino girls last summer and they both dropped eggs. The breeder I got them from says they were both paired with a small Albino male, but after not seeing locks or any real follicle progess let them go. So the hatchlings should be het albinos, but because I did not do the breeding I can not guarantee it. I kept the females to prove and am selling the males as normals. I am letting the buyers know the situation and will inform them if the females do prove out.

I also sold my 50% poss het pied males as normals.

I would guess it happens a lot with males ...

Many 100% het albino males, 66% het pied males, 66% het albino females were sold as nomals to the general public.

I also mixed up a a 100% het albino breedable male as a normal. The people at the show think it was a normal but it was 100% het albino. I will see them this month to make sure they know. lol. They got a Gary messed up deal .

But a lot of males get sold off her as normals also.

I let people know what they actually are, but they are priced the same as normals. At that price though most people don't really care if they are het for anything, they're just looking for a pet.

Doh! I clicked no and because I read it wrong first. I originally thought the question was has anyone ever sold a normal as a het. :-p I've only done it once and it was with one that was purchased from a breeder I later found to be questionable. It was a male that was supposed to be het for caramel albino. When I found out about this breeder's reputation i figured it was just a male normal and as I don't have room for any extra of those :-p I just sold it off as a normal male.

Ok, so why are males worth less than females? You still need both to make babies...so I don't get it.

wow this is WAY more common than I thought.

Yes, I've also been known to give away possible Het males for free just to open up rack space and reduce the feeding bill.... ;)

Well, the way I see it is, if I have possible Het females, I can buy a visual male (lets use Albino for example) and breed him to as many possible Hets as I want. If they prove out and give me visuals great. If they don't prove out, or the BP gods are frowning upon me, at least I know the babies are all 100% Hets.

If I have a possible Het male then it seems like a waste, to me at least, to try to prove him out when the odds of him not being a Het, thus a waste of time and resources, is just as likely or unlikely of him being Het.

Like Sam already said, and look at it this way. Males can breed to many females so it's always good to have way more females. You can take your one male spider and breed it to 5 different females and make lots of spider babies (or crosses if the females are other morphs) where as if you have one female spider, the only spiders you'll be making are with her and the one male she's bred to.

Although some do breed many males to a female, I personally don't because I like knowing who the father of the babies are with a bit more certainly. It also helps with punnett outcomes when there's only one male to your female. So you need more females and less males, demand for males goes down, so does price.

Think of it this way -

You raise a possible het male to try to prove him out - he never proves out - so you have an adult normal male, which you won't be using in your breeding program once you don't prove him out, and he has no way to "earn his keep" in your collection as a normal male.

You raise a possible het female to try to prove her out. She never proves out - but you still have a breedable weight female who can still be used in your breeding program to be bred with anything - recessives to make future hets, doms to make more doms, co-doms to make more co-doms - thus maintaining her value in your collection.

This is all from a business stand point when deciding what to hold back.

I sold my adult spider that was 50% Het albino as with a normal spider price( for a adult, and i still think i was way under their market value). As said before, i did not do the breeding or have paper work so i was not going to jack up the price for something i was not sure about. The person i got her from said her dad was a het albino, and paper work is only as good as the breeder when it comes to poss hets so i did not worry about getting any at the show . I let the buyer know and i just considered it as a bonus if she ever trys to prove her out.

I sold about 24 poss het males as normals last year. I tried for a while to sell them as what they were but ended up selling them in a lot for $8 each (it's hard to compete with all the CH). They were poss he clown, albino, pied, lavender and g stripe. I will probably end up doing the same this year though I will be producing much fewer poss hets. I swear, it is easier to get rid of normal males than poss hets even when trying to sell them for the same price. Some people seem to just not want "hets" for some reason. I actually lost 3 sales last year when I told the customers that they were poss hets.

I do it all the time, but only males.

I sometimes have possible hets and normals for sale for different prices, even though all the normal males are poss hets. I will tell this to a regular customer, but strangers pay full poss het price.:)
