Who is you least fav TV herp person?
I have to go with Brady Barr. I have never seen anyone in that position so overdramatic. Drama Queen doesn't even cover it. I do watch some of his stuff because of the content but sometimes his antics just drive me nuts.

The closest 2nd is that "Snake Master" Steve Austin guy. He deserved to get bit.

I think you meant Austin Stevens. And yea he did deserve to get bitten.

Who the heck is that one guy, I cannot remember his name...he had a beard, and he used to mess with snakes a lot...I never liked him because he always seemed to be so damn rough with the animals. He would grab them right behind the head and look like he was squeezing them hard enough to pop their little heads off.

Anyone know who I'm talking about?

No one'll ever equal Steve Irwin, IMHO.

Brady Barr is a drama queen, but I never could stand Jack Hanna... I saw him once on the Today Show (I think), and he took a grape from a primate and then acted surprised when the poor monk wanted to rip his face off. Must be smart if he takes food from a monkey...

Thats what I meant, I was never sure of his name, but the "snake master" title clued me in, so I copied it.

I've grown up watching Jack Hanna on Tv saturday morning, so I cant hate the guy. I havent watched him in ages, but he was always showing the coolest animals. :P

Well, I don't consider Jack Hanna a herp guy. Any misinformation he spouts is probably something he reads of a cue card. I find his personality and demeanor to be pleasant.

Look up "Python Bites Brady Barr" on youtube. That really justput the hammer down for me. So annoying.

If, and I mean if, Steve Irwin ever got bit by a nskae that big he'd have gone "Well, crikey! That hurts. He's a little buggered off at me right now. It's my own fault. I'll just relax and keep my cool until he lets go." Or something like that.

Brady Barr, hands down is a wimp. His grabbing and shrieking and acting like he's gonna die when he all but stuffed his body part into whatever critter's mouth... I want to smack him upside the head.
I used to REALLY admire Jack Hanna. He's done a LOT for zoos. But this past stunt on tv with Clark just absolutely sickened me. Unless I see a public apoligy out of him, he'll have to stay on the bad list.

What "bizarro' post are ya'll talking about?

And spix, I think you're thinking of Mark O'Shea. He actually depicts the most realistic nature of field herping, but unfortunately, it doesn't make for an exciting show and he's not a very engaging speaker either. He rarely finds what he's lookign for, so its about an hour of ole Mark walking around all over creation and describing this snake no one's ever heard of before.

I havent watch Jeff Corwin in a while, but when I did, he was probably my favorite, probably just because he made me laugh. Steve Irwin was a close second though. Steve was reckless sometimes, but his passion made up for it.

Like I said, Mark o'Shea was just boring, and Stevens is trying too hard to be famous. Never seen this Brady Bar, but he sounds like a pansy.

You know though if you think about it, even if there's some tv personality you don't care for, isn't it pretty cool that there's enough interest developing to have these shows even on tv. I know my 4 kids are exposed to a variety of reptiles through the efforts of these people that I truly appreciate. Some of them I don't care for as far as their delivery, but I really applaud the exposure they give these creatures that are often so misunderstood. :)

Austin Stevens, hands down the biggest retard when it comes to boids....at least in my opinion. I think along those same lines, Brady Barr. That Retic he took a bite from wasn't even that large. I mean, come on...my little brother would have taken that bite better :8:

Mark O'Shae is one of the worlds most respected authorities on the Rock Python species. He knows his stuff! The reason he doesn't find what he's looking for as frequently as the others, is he doesn't stage his captures; unlike most other television-based herpetologists. I personally love his shows :D

Anyway, love the spix comment about birth. When he showed the "really bad bite" part, I was yelling "You pansy!" at the tv. Jeff Corwin is silly at times, but I like to watch him, since the silly voices he does make me laugh.

I thought Brady Barr overreacted quite a bit as well, but the bite did turn out to be pretty bad. Probably much worse than it would have been if he had just remained calm instead flailing about like a lunatic. As bad as the bite was, though, I still have very little sympathy for him. I can't see any respectable herp "expert" placing themselves in that type of situation... grabbing a medium sized retic out of a hole in a cave while waist deep in mud/feces water.

Jeff Corwin is ok. A little goofy for my taste though. I don't really have a issue with O'Shea other than the fact that he just seems to handle the snakes so roughly.

I may watch Brady Barr now just for the comedic relief factor.

Re: Who is you least fav TV herp person?
I haven't watched TV with any regularity for years. I've enjoyed all the herp shows I used to catch from time to time...but there are obviously lots of new ones I've never even heard of. This "Barr" guy, for instance.

After watching that vid and just shaking my head in wonderment...I have to say this: I'm sure that bite hurt like nobody's business....plus the fear of seriously nasty infections from being in that water and mud that is probably filled with bat guano and who knows what other nasties. I really don't think we should mock him for his reaction because we can't know how badly it hurt. It looked to me like he was ready to pass out a couple of times and I thought he did a good job hanging on.

That being said....I also have to wonder....WHAT THE HECK did he expect when he pulls (forces!!!) a wild python out of its den....drags it into murky water with no visibility and absolutely no way to control the animal's movements. Of COURSE it's going to bite!! He's very lucky it seemed to be a defensive bite/release sort of thing, rather than the snake latching on and trying to kill the predator that dared to threaten in its own home! Completely irresponsible and brainless on the part of all parties involved with that shoot.

I have to say, though....that if it weren't for guys like Jeff Corwin and Steve Irwin....I wouldn't be here at all. It was them that got my daughter hooked on snakes...and her that revived my own childhood interests. I'd say overall, the world of herp-lovers is a MUCH better place for guys like these.....whether you agree with their methods or like their personalities....or not.

    :salute:

O'Shae is a pretty cool guy, if you ever get a chance to talk to him. Occasionally he shows up at Midwest Tongs booths, helping to promote the product...."occasionally" :P I've seen him handle most of the snakes on tv...it's actually not as rough as it may seem. :)

That Brady Barr video is hilarious I have never been bite by a big snake so I dont know how it feels but of all the things he deals with I would think that is the one I would want to bite me. He has to have prepared himself for the day when he gets bit by a dangerous animal I would think he would not react like such a pansy.lol.

I don't know about Nigel Marven, I like him because my daughter absolutely adores his show on Animal Planet, "Prehistoric Park". I have actually lately found myself watching it with her. It's informative in a way that my kids really like, so it works for me!!

I absolutely adore Jeff Corwin, I think he has a great passion for animals and he also makes me laugh as well. He may be a little goofy but my kids and I love watching him. I really enjoyed the one show where he was blindfolded and dropped off in the middle of nowhere USA and had to figure out where he was by identifying native snakes that he came across. I haven't been able to watch him much lately, don't know if he has had any more shows like that. My very favorite is Steve Irwin, although like someone else mentioned earlier, it is a little hard to watch his shows now.:tears: I had been watching his shows for a long time.

I do watch the other ones that were mentioned on occasion, but don't really make it a point to try and watch when I get the chance.

Re: Who is you least fav TV herp person?
Aww, why people knocking Corwin? I like his show a lot better than Steve Irwin's. He's a little silly and makes awkward jokes a lot, but he's more of a naturalist than a dramatist, which I like. And I can relate to the animal-obsessed nerdiness.

I know we're not talking favorites, but I love that guy from the Blue Planet/Life in Cold Blood series!! He's amazing!

I can't stand the sensationalist "snake wranglers"... I don't know any by name but the ones that will climb into a snake burrow and poke its head with a snake hook, and then act all terrified when it tries to bite them... umm, it's venomous, and you're poking its head, but to people that don't know anything about herps, the evil snake is attacking. Grr :taz:

Re: Who is you least fav TV herp person?
That's why I always liked Steve. He was always quick to point out that if he ever got bitten it was his fault and not the snakes. Plus he was the one that got me interested in herps to begin with, if it wasn't for him there probably wouldn't be 5 snakes living with me right now. I also felt a more personal connection with him because he always had his family and friends with him on the show; I don't know, I guess it just made me feel like I knew him.

Not like Austin "I'm gonna bat this cobra in the face til it bites me" Stevens. IMO a lot of these guys that are out now are just trying to walk in Steve's footsteps, and some are better at it than others. Flailing around with snake in hand and yowling at the top of your lungs does not an Irwin make.

What I wanna know is, when is a female herper going to get a show? The guys have had their chance, I say let a chic give it a shot!

Jeff Corwin is pretty funny and so I'll sit down and be entertained.

Nigel Marven, saw him at NARBC and I think any guy who does a show on dinosaurs, prehistoric creatures, etc. is alright in my book. I'll let him slide.

Brady "Cry-baby" Barr. I watch the show to learn what not to do in any situation. First of all, he acts like the little kids at the zoo when a lion or bear yawns.

"OOOH MAN, I've NEVER seen one THAT BIG!"

"These ARE JUST. . .I'M TANGLED IN THE ROPES, GUYS!!! I'M TANGLED . . .*gurgling noises*"

"I made a massive error in my calculations, it seems that my hippo costume is only a hippo costume and is not immune to getting stuck in the mud."

"I need to scrape hippo sweat. I just have to."

"I am going in to catch a reh-teek. Deep inside that cave to test out my theory. . .that snakes like warm, dark places with a food source."

"I've made him vomit his meal. Excellent, now lets see if I can get bit"

Brady Barr Definately. I watched him last night catch a big python in India. Not sure exactly on the species, but he kept screaming and he just seems like he doesn't know what he is doing. Some little indian dude clearly found the snake but Brady took all the credit. "I FOUND IT! I FOUND IT! THATS A BIG SNAKE!". What a retard.

Steve was awesome. He was just so passionate and he new EXACTLY what he was doing. He was raised in Australia and mentored by his father on all the flaura and fauna of the land.

Corwin is pretty cool too. You can tell he is passionate which is great and he's pretty funny to boot.

All the rest can pretty much disapear.
