OMG some people!!!!
So I'm on the bus home from work, and it wasn't packed or anything, there was one person to each pair of seats, and one pair completely open, a young couple get on the bus and takes the last open set of seats. This older (50 or so maybe) woman sitting across the aisle from them gets up, walks over and asks me to move over so that she can sit down. I just kind blankly starred at her, thinking "why are you moving from having two seats by yourself?" at which point she says, and not quietly:
"I don't feel comfortable sitting that close to one of them black peoples"
... Loss of words after which I reply, still in my nice sweet customer service voice since I just got off work "Oh, I'm sorry, I don't feel comfortable sacrificing my own comfort just because you're racist" (I have a knack for not thinking through some things before they come out of my mouth)
AND THEN she hauls off and hits me with her purse saying that *I'm* disrespectful and screams at the bus driver to let her off immediately!
The guy in front of me is then like, "I can't believe that just happened!" and I was at a complete loss for words except to say, "I know" and then in disbelief missed my own stop which would have been the next one...
I can't believe people still think it's okay to act that way!

Re: OMG some people!!!!
Yea I kind of know how you feel. While at my sisters birthday party, we get on the subject of politics. I'm not of either party but I lean towards democrat and while we are talking my grandmother says "Well I don't think a woman should be president." Not could not, but SHOULD NOT. I immediatly turn around and said "A woman can do whatever she wants to do." At that point, 3 WOMEN in my family turn to look at me and say "No they can't" My family is so screwed up. Later that day while my sister and I are in the grocery store she says "Well I don't really care about a woman being president buy I sure as hell don't want a black man running this country." My sister is 14 and clearly my grandmother and mother (who use the n word on a regular basis) have done their job at brainwashing her. I stopped her in the store and I tried to keep my voice down but I told her "There is nothing wrong with a black man wanting to be president. I'm so tired of my own family seeing things in black and white. You are so blind and its because you listen to your grandmother and mother who have known nothing but racism all their lives. Obama is a well-educated man and there is no reason he can't run for president and there is no reason he can't win the election either."
Then I said some other things along the lines of I will never speak to her again if she says the n word in my presence or says any kind of racist thing while I'm around. I'm really starting to think I should keep away from my family seeing as I'm about as unracist and unsexist as it comes.

Re: OMG some people!!!!
LOL me too... In order to get along with my family (my father especially) the following topics are off limits:
Religion
Politics
Sexual Preference
Medicare
Immigration
Native rights
Some of those still surprise me, especially considering that my mother is native, and my father raised us all without ever having set foot in a church. Ironically enough, gender role issues - fine. He has a friend from work who just went through a sex change and he's very accepting of that.

Re: OMG some people!!!!
Racial discrimination was what pushed me into a road trip away from Virginia 25 years ago. I consciously made the choice to not raise my children around such hurtful thoughts and behaviors. Thank goodness my truck broke down about 40 minutes from the Pacific Ocean cause I suppose I would have tried to continue to increase the distance between my own ideologies and those of a racist ideology; whether explicit or implied.
I am glad you had the courage to stand up for Humanity! Right on!!

Re: OMG some people!!!!
i don't get why all these people are against a female president. i mean ok maybe clinton shouldnt be presidant but what about eva peron and other countries that have females as leaders. and they are doing just fine elizabeth the 3rd and all the queens from the past. and they all do a damn fine job. so don't say that females shouldnt be president.

She was not a lady!!! She is a product of her times and so all of the rest of us have to change, in whatever way we can, these times. That's why I'm so proud of you....sounds like actions my kids have taken...at least your parents didn't need to bail you out of jail.....

Re: OMG some people!!!!
You younger people are lucky to live in a world where this kind of behavior has become disturbing instead of commonplace. Unfortunately you will see this more in the older generations. As ugly as it is it is nice to know that everyday that mentality becomes more the past and the future only gets better.

You don't have a knack for thinking things through??? Are you kidding?? You thought on your feet faster than I ever could have. I am glad you didn't censor yourself. That was an AWESOME response. You rock!!
BTW, that does suck that people are like that and think it's OK to be like that and assume that other people are like that. It all sucks! Forget the purse wacking, I hope that you-know-what has a nervous break down or something. She'd deserve it. OK... sorry, I got all hot around the collar. That isn't nice to wish a nervous break down on someone, but really...!

Re: OMG some people!!!!
Brilliant! You should have charged the old hag with assault. :-D
-
Re: OMG some people!!!!
.......OMG! I just can't believe that. You expect that sort of thing to still happen with older folk around the southern states...but ONTARIO??? Gimmie a break...
If there's one thing I can't stand in people, it's close-mindedness! All this 'I don't care to know what kind of person they are, all I see is their color/sex/religious affiliation'... drives me up the walls!
Oh, and that response of yours was PERFECT! Just what should have been said. I'm sorry the old nutcase got you with her purse tho. :) I've had a few interesting encounters on buses, but luckily none ended in physical violence. Most of them, however, do include the other party blabbering on non-stop to me...so be lucky she left and didn't start lecturing/preaching to you. :)
Oh, and Just in case anyone cares to know, the encounters I've had are all based on the nice Celtic pentacle I wear at all times. :)

Re: OMG some people!!!!
I could be wrong about this but it sounds like that old lady is in need of a Falcon Punch!
Yeah! :8:

Re: OMG some people!!!!
Earl thats freakin classic! I laughed out loud on that one! :gj:
Actually I had a poor situation in Ocean City, MD for our high schools senior week. (I'm very diverse btw) But when some of my white friends found out that some of my black and arabic friends were staying as well they all packed up and left to go home. They would rather go home then spend a week of relaxing and having fun. They said "We can trust people like them." I asked why and they said "My grandparents wouldn't approve". It makes me sick. Needless to say, I lost a lot of "friends" that week.

Re: OMG some people!!!!
ocean city sucks I woulda gone home too but not for the same reasons
-
Re: OMG some people!!!!
That was absolutely psychotic.
However, I loved how you handled the situation.
Didn't that lady know its black history month? ;-)
2 of my cousins are black... its a damn good thing she didn't try that with me. My tongue can be quite barbed.

Re: OMG some people!!!!
i don't know about you but the thought of a woman in control of the "button" unnerves me, what if it's her time of the month and in a fit decides to erase a country hehe

Re: OMG some people!!!!

Ya know...my wife and I were wrestling once and I totally accidentally gave her a falcon punch. I Swear To God it was by mistake.
But I got to tell ya she has agreed with me about everything ever since. I mean...EVERYTHING!
I purposely put that in CAPS to. Marriage is great. ;)

Re: OMG some people!!!!
Its true, some womens raging hormones have driven them to pull guns on their husbands (who knows what those women would do as commander and chief), but lets face it, if a woman can make it all the way to being nominated for a presidential candidate, against all the opposition, she must have her moods totally under control. That being said...I would rather go hunting with "Richard" Cheney than have Hillary be president...again.
Okay, on subject...Awesome come back!
Oh, and the "South" is not as racist as some of you may think, and we don't really ride horses to school either (I had an exchange student tell me thats what he expected of Texas before he came here).
Just a few points of information from yer local hill-billy. Y'all come back now Y'all here?

What the heck is a falcon punch?

Re: OMG some people!!!!
Yeah... See, if I'd thought there was any chance she was older than my own father I might have not been as surprised, but she has TOPS 50 or just looks super young...
Either way I was in shock enough that I was convinced to go out for a friend's 'moving away' pre-party (he's going to Australia in a week, and I work at 8am on a Saterday) and it at least made a good drinking story... Sure topped my 'on the phone' one liner for the night:
"Who the "f" do you think you are telling me to do this, I call all the time and no one ever tells me to do this. SERIOUSLY who the 'f' do you think you are"
"Well, I think I'm the person trying to help you get this sorted out, if you'd prefer I could stop trying to help you and we could talk about the weather instead. If not, could you please hit the 'source' button on your samsung remote" After which I got, "it's working", and then a dial tone because I'd gotten hung up, and one of the TMs in my call center laughing hysterically.... I just seemed to be on with the no thinking one liners today!

Sorry Earl,
That made me kind of uncomfortable on a family friendly site so I have removed it temporarily while I get input from the other staff.
I'm sure anyone who needs to know can google the term in the meantime.

No I beleive its the suggestion that they have so little self control that is offensive. Correct me if I'm wrong though as I am only guessing.
I'm sure there are all sorts of safeguards surrounding the mythical "button" - after all they let Dan Quayle and Ronald Reagan near it an I, personally, wouldn't have trusted either of those two on a personal level with an empty polythene bag and a plastic butter knife. :rage:

Um... all I have to say is, how did someone start a rant on racism and you came in here and now we need a rant on sexism??? :rage::rage: Were you guys JOKING? Those words smell of ignorance. BTW, interesting that those comments came from men, like the racist comment discussed in the OP came from a caucasian.

No, it came from a man, not all men; just like the racist comment came from a woman, not all women (nor all Caucasians for that matter).
-
Re: OMG some people!!!!
PS, she wasn't 'caucasian'. She just also wasn't 'black'. I didn't feel what she looked like was important... Just her behaviour unfortunately.

You are right. Sorry, I thought it was two different guys :8:, but now I see that it was the same guy making two sexist comments.

Re: OMG some people!!!!
