Re: Picking my Boa today!
It might be a few weeks before you get him, but you can post the picture of the one you chose, can't you??? Pretty please? I can't wait to see him!
Re: Picking my Boa today!
I have it narrowed down to four pending some advice from him. once I pick one I'll ask him if I can use his picture :)
I told Augie he's getting a step-brother, but he's not impressed.
What is the recommended quarantine these days...3 months? 6? 9?
Re: Picking my Boa today!
I've been QTing for 3 months. I'm not sure if it's longer when it's different species or not.
Tell us more about this locality - are they one of the smaller boas? I think I remember you wanting a smaller boa when we talked at NERD last year.
Re: Picking my Boa today!
Yep, Boa Constrictor Amarali are the 'short tailed boas'
They are red-tails, but they tend to be on the short but girthy side of things.
The ones I am looking at are known as 'South Brazilian Amarali' and they tend toward about 5ft for males, 6ft for females. Their markings are more like BCC with bright reds and light background coloring. There are other Amarali locality boas, so Amarali are not all alike, other than all being short tails.
That's what my research has given me - someone please correct me if I am mistaken on any of that.
Here is a link to Barry Miller's page on the species:

Re: Picking my Boa today!
Otherwise known as Bolivians... their range can stretch from Eastern Bolivia and Paraguay all they way through southern Brazil to the eastern coast. And yep! They typically stay under 7' in length. They're called short tails because, well, their tails are shorter! Their ventral scale count and their subcaudal scale count is quite a bit less than other boa contrictor (I think ten?)... if you look at them side by side with an imperator you can tell the difference... the imperator will have big red saddles stretching up nearly a third of it's body... an amarali will have considerably fewer red saddles (looks like a little red worm on a baby, lol).
Congrats!!!!!!! Can't wait to see pics!
Re: Picking my Boa today!
That's so exciting for you!! How long do you think it might be before you can have it safe and sound in your QT rack? I just got Vin Russo's book on boas yesterday and haven't been able to put it down! It's a great read!! Can't wait to see a picture of your new cutie!!!
Re: Picking my Boa today!
yeah, Russo's book was what originally pointed me toward the Amarali :) The pics in there of the Belknap/Lemke animals are amazing.
I don't know how long - it depends on shipping arrangements and the schedule of the seller, who has been incredibly busy with his day job.
Re: Picking my Boa today!
Can't go wrong with Amarali! Congrats and be sure to get us pics! You may just be the one that pushes me over the line to get a pair of these guys which I have been reluctantly passing on.
Re: Picking my Boa today!
How exciting! GOD I love the South Brazilians, I can't wait to see which one you choose! Lol I want another one SO BAD!
Re: Picking my Boa today!
I think I've chosen - hoping to wrap up the details this weekend :)

I can't find nice, normal Columbian females on anybody's site! What am I missing? Are they called something different than 'normal Columbian'?
Edit: Also, these are the ones that have the red-tail and are greyish, brownish, tannish...sort of desert colors, right?
