What to do in case of a power failure?
    Hi!
Yesterday night it was raining (freezing rain) and we had a short power failure. It didnt last long, 5 mins but it made me think what would I do if I had a long power failure to keep my snake warm (especially during winter) ?:O
I dont own a generator and dont plan on owning one.
    What would you do?
    Thanks,
    Fred.

we had the same thing happen in Tulsa, Oklahoma last month. Unfortunately the power was out for 7 days. 600,000 people lost power in the worst ice storm in the states history. first i went to a local pet store that was running off of genterators and bought like 10 boxes of these. when those ran out i found a wal mart that was open and bought a power inverter for my car and ran an extension cord from the house out to the drive way and heated the everything like that. it was a major horror story and hope that i never have to go through anything like it again but we did what we had to do.

yeah the same happened here in Québec, Canada in 1998. I've been 14 days outta school ( and without electricity) and we had to move out cuz it was too cold (winter -30°c), even my dog was freezing and shaking.
I wonder what I would have done if I had a snake at that time???

    Put him in your jacket.

But seriously though, up here in Michigan, where we've been experiencing weird weather this winter from 50's one day to -12 degrees (-22 wind chill) the next (that was 2 weeks ago) a generator is a good idea and almost mandatory if you can afford it. Luckily, we havent had any power outages this winter, we mostly get them in the summer storms, but it is on my shopping list. Check out the classifieds too.

Living in the middle of no where this was a major concern for use too. We only keep two snakes at the house, the rest stay in the nearest town to us in a place we rent. About 10 miles away. Even by "town" its still only 1000 people, but it has more convinces then we do, so we decided to move the snakes there. Not saying the power cant go out there.

So, if the power goes out at this house, or were the snakes are kept, we have a large portable generator, a 3/4 ton 4x4 and a huge box of 30 hour heat packs.

I'm glad you brought this up. The winter and power outages clam people's collections every year. People need to be prepared that live in cold areas.

    David.

I hadn't even thought about power outages until I saw this thread. I need to invest in some of those heat packs like they use in shipping reptiles. How would you use those? One pack per tub and would you put the heat pack on the bottom of the tub (like tape it on) or would you put the pack directly in the tub with the snake?

although i haven't been keeping snakes very long, My parents happen to be in the computer industry and I manages to grab one of their extra Ups's (uninteruptible power supply) you just plug it in the wall and then plug your thermostat into it and when the power goes out the ups keeps everything going until the power is restored, their kind of pricy though Im lucky we had an extra, and I would rely on it for more than an hour or two

We had a power outage last night for 3hrs or so and I got my first chance at using my battery back up. Mine is pretty much the same thing quinten801 talks about and is made to back up a business sized server. Power wasnt out too long but my snakes had heat the whole time!... The battery back ups are kinda pricey(I think mine was like 500 & made my American Power Conversion) but if you got an incubator full of eggs theyre well worth it!

Tripp-Lite also makes some inexpensive ones I don't think they have any high wattage ones though not 100% sure.

I have been looking at some back ups and saw one that could hook up to a solar panel to recharge if needed, gotta find the link.

There was a major storm here last night. It only lasted a few minutes but it was enough to cause a lot of wind damage. Powers been off here for about 12 hours now but luckily its summer. Its been real hot lately and I haven't needed the heat lamp the last few days but after last nights storm its a little cooler today. Air temp in the tank is still about 79-80 but I'm starting to get worried about her belly heat.

i have a shallow tupperware container reserved for just such an occasion.
i fill it with very hot water, put the lid on tight, put it into a pillowcase and place it on the warm side with that hide box on top. it only needs to be emptied & refilled with more hot water when it cools off too much.
we've had several power outages due to crazy storms this spring & this was my best idea for emergency heat.

last winter we had bad winter storms and power would be out all night.so like we have 3 kerosene heaters and they heat up really good,so i have a 10 gallon and i would put my snake in it and put the screen lid on it and sit it by the heater but not to close cause it will get hot but i put a heat guage in to see if i needed to put the tank closer or futher to the heater.it worked out great.it kept us and the snake warm.but now i have two snake so depending on how the winter is wen it comes around my babies bight be sharing the 10 for a night...maybe
