another snake

Sorry if this has been asked or not, but I'm looking to get another snake. I currently have 1 normal bp. I'm just curious to know what snake you would recommend for a relatively new guy to the herp world and why. Thanks! :)

I think you should stay with BP's, they are the best and come in soooo many variations

On BP.net, you are likely to get a lot of people telling you to get another BP! :P

If you want something different, there are lots of choices. Corn snakes are widely thought of as the best beginner snake. A lot of experienced keepers also enjoy keeping them. They are available in a whole rainbow of colors, and you can get most of the morphs for a lot less than the BP morphs. I don't own one yet (we are planning to get one for our 10 yr old, so I've done a lot of research recently) but it seems like they will provide a nice contrast to a BP. They are supposed to be more active and less shy. Also they are much more of a long, thin snake, instead of heavy bodied.

It might help people give you better answers if you say what you'd like in a snake.

Just to let you know what I'm looking for, I love my bp I'm just something new to expand my horizons. Something a bit bigger but not enough to eat my dog :D. Once again thanks for the info.

You might look into getting a Carpet python. They're not too much harder than BPs to take care of, generally get a bit bigger, and are real sweethearts (though some have a nippy baby phase).

All but one of my corns are nippy. the other just is being a babie that he is. But most are real sweethearts. Talk to a breeder, and ask for a nice mellow not nippy corn! I have bunches of corns, and they are great. :D

You may want to look into Bloods. I've heard great things about them and they are a bit bigger than a Ball.

What kind of ratsnakes? There's a ton of species out there. Most are on the large side of colubrids, averaging between 4-6 ft....but of course, slender compared to most boids.

Really, there's a ton of snakes that could be suitable for what you want. IMO, its just a matter of what colors you like weighed against your pocket book. Thats what it boils down to.

That said, good suggestions are: rosy boas, sand boas, spotted pythons, children's pythons, cornsnakes, kingsnakes, milksnakes, ratsnakes, house snakes, hognose snakes...and maybe a few more obscure ones out there, too. My suggestion is google all these guys, find which one(s) catch your eye and then do some deeper research on those. Because in many cases, you go to a forum and ask what your next snake should be, every person will probably give u a different answer.

My corn is NOT nippy in the slightest actually. He was my second snake after my BP, and he is quite active and very beautiful. They are very easy to care for, don't get very big, and are a joy to keep in my opinion. :snake::snake:

I send the Carpet Python. Super easy to care for, very sweet with lots of handling.

I even think that some carpets could even be the "first" snake. Corns are fast squirrly and pee on you a lot. So if your not used to a fast snake, a corn might get away from you!

If you didn't want too large of a snake you could opt for one of the smaller species of RTB.

I would go for a blood, carpet or maybe a male Colombian RTB

Actually a Blood Python was my first choice they are pretty cool but I've read they are very unforgiving and aren't a good choice for someone somewhat new.

Male RTBs dont get to big.

I also have a ratsnake, he is a Biards rat snake. Great animal, and the change they go through is amazing! I would love to have a mexacan black king, and well as a lucy texas rat! More things to consider!
