Longest Off Feed?
Whats the longest one of your bps have been off feed?
I have a male that last ate on August 9th. His weight on the 1st of August was 1877 grams tonight his weight is 1789 grams.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
My longest. Was eight months. But he did that every year! Lost 100-150 g each time. So I didnt mind just watched and learned!

Re: Longest Off Feed?
WC female went 55 weeks for us before finally taking a mouse. Then she ate 4 mice a week and put on about 1200 grams in about 8 months.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
My male went 8 months last year without eating...and he seems to be doing it again this year and hasn't eaten since October. Like Jas I saw abou 100g in weight loss. I don't know what triggers him but he comes out of fast and eats like a beast.
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
My male goes off feed for an avg of 7 mos every year. He usually loses about 150gms.
He also feeds like a beast when he is off fast. He eats a sm-med rat every Thurs for the rest of the year.
He has been doing this for the last 4 yrs and according to the vet his growth rate is great and he is very healthy.
It's what he does. :)

Re: Longest Off Feed?
not a ball, but I had a Candoia go off feed for 14 months.
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
My longest was about 5 months or so. Geez, that was frustrating. I wasn't keeping track of weights back a few years ago. I only had one as a pet. I took him to a vet for a regular check up, which happened to fall smack dab in the middle of his fasting and the vet told me he was healthy and had a good weight.
Obviously he didn't lose much, but I would have to agree with everyone else. Once their feeding response comes back, it comes back with a vengeance.
He's off feed again this year, although he started later than usual.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
Man am I happy to see this thread, my BP just ate on Saturday for the first time in 7 MONTHS, I have been offering food every week and when he refuses, I usually just give it to my corn. I have been weighing him regularly and his weight hasn't dropped significantly so I wasn't too concerned, but it is good to know that this may happen every year, so I won't worry so much in the future.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
7 months until I finally figured out she wanted a smaller tub to live in.... LOL Yeah, I'm quick! :)

Re: Longest Off Feed?
For those who this case is usual,
Have you seen a pattern in the time of the year they do it?
Can you let us know if this is a pattern or they do it random?
I ask because I have a few WC's since November and they hasn't eat yet, the two males where skinny and I decide to assit feed them las week the both ate and last monday I assit them again and they ate with out any problem, now I'm considering do the same with the females. They look in good shape and just has lose and average of 50-75 grams each. I don't know if assit the females too or leave them becasue they are in breeding season and that could be why they are not eating.
Thanks and sorry if I highjack this thread.

Took me 8 months to figure it out with my first ball python.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
I got a WC female that I bought after she dropped her eggs - she took a couple of rat pups and then went off feed for 18 months - that whole time she lost around 125 grams.
Other than that I can think of only one that went about a year for no apparent reason - I cold be wrong I haven't always kept the best of feed records - but for the most part 8-9 months is around the max that some of mine have gone off for their winter fast.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
I had a male pastel go over 5 months, he was breeding excellent during that time too. Come summer ate like clock work. My others snakes fed normally in same conditions.
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
My longest without eating was 1 day short of a year. Shes an 02 normal girl, she is about 2000g now.
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
Mine was a WC that went 13 months. I ended up going out of country for a month and when I came back (outside of water) no one had even opened her tub...so I dropped in a rat and she nabbed it. Continued to leave her alone and she started eating every other week...now she eats weekly and loves to come out and be carried around.
My other is my male pastel who on his first year breeding stop eating for 7 months...(thought he would miss the next season) but then just decided to eat, though picky and on/off...but since breeding season started this year he has never missed a meal now (and is breeding like a champ)...strange

Re: Longest Off Feed?

My BP is still on his longest fast. Hasn't accepted food since mid October. I keep trying once a week but still no dice.
And it's driving me freaking crazy!!!!
But I'm okay. Really I am. :gj:

Thank you Ashley. If I have to at some point I'll eat one of the furry little rodents myself just to show the boy how it's done. It is a very trying situation but none the less he will learn the ways, I will teach him. :)

Re: Longest Off Feed?
I mentioned I had a male in this thread that was fasting since october but after reading a few other responses I thought I should give moving him to a smaller enclosure a shot. Well I did that three days ago and last night he ate for me without a problem. It was a very exciting moment. :)

How big was his old tank and what did you move him in to?
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
Moved him from a 30qt tub to a 15qt tub and....BAM! Had to do the rat dance for a couple seconds but every prior week until last night he would just look at the rat and retreat to his hide.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
I have had a female Royal stop eating for 22 months.
It was very worrying but she did not lose that much weight (never thought to weigh her)
She started eating again about 2 mice each week for about 6 months and then went on another fast for the following 7 months.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
I have a female spider from 06 that hasn't ate in a year. She won't take anything from rats, mice and ASF's. She has been hovering at around 700grams. I guess it just happens.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
I've noticed a seasonal thing with Monty.
In his first year he ate just about every week. His second winter he went off feed for Dec-March eating just once in those months before feeding regularly again until the beginning of Jan this year. I think partly it is down to room temp in a poorly heated big old house - temps inside his cage are fine with temp gun but the room air temp is not ideal. No easy solution to that one I'm afraid :(
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
The female spider just ate two mice last night I couldn't believe it.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
Good for you (and him/her!), at 13 months I'd be finding someone to force feed I think.

Rich we have 3 young females here that all should likely be in 30 qt tubs but every one of them will refuse to eat if you move them up. Put them back in the rack with the 15qt tubs and they all eat like troopers. Drives me nuts as they really are a bit hefty to be in that rack but heck, if they like it and refuse to eat if they are moved out - I guess for now they are staying put. :)
As far as longest fasters, we have two WC adult females that both came to us having not eaten in close to a year. Both were severely underweight but are doing much better now. One of them, Saoirse, has been with us going on 3 years now and still fasts every winter. She normally will lose about 100 grams over the fast which is really not much at all for her.
We know winter is coming when Saoirse turns her snout up at her dinner and goes off to her hide to snooze. We don't need a silly groundhog to tell us spring is here when Saoirse comes out, starts searching around and whammo hits her ASF's.
Oh btw, spring is here folks! Saoirse took her ASF's the last two weeks. :D It may be snowing like heck where I live but I'll go by the instincts of this snake any day of the week.

Re: Longest Off Feed?
So heres another question to throw in there, whats the youngest and/or lowest weight of one that has gone off feed for you.
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
Good question. I wondered the same thing as my 9 month old normal female isn't eating either. Since 12/17/07 she's only eaten three times. I figured it could be a number of factors: winter, the moves to other enclosures (first to a large display cage, then a tub), or a sudden dislike for live mice. She's only lost 6 grams in that time(330 to 324), so I'm not really worried, but I would like to get her going again since she's still so young.
I have one more trick to play, though. Since she's refused the most due to being moved out of her 20L tank, I have shifted the corns so that I could reclaim that tank for her. It's been disinfected and I'll be moving her back to her old home this weekend. Hopefully after a few weeks, I'll see some mouse snatching once more. :)
But, to get back to the original question... what IS the youngest and lowest weight to go off feed for long??
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
For me, I'd worry if a really young one stopped eating. They seem to be eating machines that first year or so. The youngest ones we've had that stopped eating, after a good feeding history, this year were both 06 females. They did not like their move to bigger tubs and once we returned them to the tub sizes we felt they'd both outgrown - well both of them immediately started up eating again. :)
-
Re: Longest Off Feed?
Yay.
He ate two rats tonight after almost 3 months (last winter he only went off for 2 months)>
I know I probably should have left it at one but he was holding his head up in that adorable 'i'm waiting to ambush more rodents' pose so I gave in.
