I think we need a "Terms and Agreement" page before you can post. Like, "Yes I read the Caresheet, and have done the research."
Not trying to bash on you Ace. I just see too many posts like this....

Hey and Welcome to the site!

Nope, they just need a little bit of direction as to where to find the preliminary information. I remember when I first logged on; there is a lot to take in!! I doubt any member minds helping a new member find the information they are asking about. Being a member of this forum *is* research; active research!!

Oh I totally agree i think 103252453576 times is an understatement haha. Im not hating Ace. Oh and regarding your post. If your worried about size, males tend to stay smaller, but thats not 100% true (they can become fattys too).

Ok, here is my two cents... Get a female you can breed it down the road if you want, and a 40 gl is perfect maybe even a 30....

This is good advice, since you're undecided. Females take longer to mature than males and you might decide you really like them!! Throwing a male in next year will give you a better chance that they will both mature up around the same time...if the breeding goddess is smiling... :P

that and if needed, females are generally easier to rehome than males. although i'd never give up my balls.

so its easier to care for a female...i don't want to breed though...i just want a pet plus this was even hard to fly by my parents

Care is pretty much the same between the 2. If your plans arent on breeding and you want one that can potentially be a little larger then a female will be good, if you want it to be potentially smaller than a male will work.

i think they meant its easier to sell or find another home for females, especially with breeders, because you can have more females than males when breeding and alot of people just dont want anymore males

Also... when the female gets to breeding size she might start producing unfertilized eggs which can get annoying.

I wouldn't worry about it. There really isn't a difference other than size. Females are generally a bit bigger but females have upsides. These include breeding and rehoming.

This probably isn't true but I've heard it's easier to feed females.

Are you sure you know wether my statement is true or not? It seems like your only assuming I'm false, which Im not. When it comes to feeding, its all about the snakes personality, some are easy feeders and others arnt. Simple as that.

I have no clue. I didn't mean to say you were wrong, I've just told him not to worry too much about it. My bad.

it means in case of emergency and you need to sell it/give it away, its easier since females are wanted more.

When I took my first bp to a herp vet to get it sexed, he told me that with females it can happen. I also asked a breeder when I was thinking about getting a male v. female.

Re: Girl Or Boy
Then that vet was a twit.. Females will only lay eggs if follicles have been fertilized and they have then ovulated. If they have never been with a male, then they won't lay eggs(unless you're talking about parthenogenosis, but that's an extenuating circumstance). They aren't birds.

Re: Girl Or Boy
Well then I stand corrected. I assumed the vet who had been in practice for over 30 years knew what he was talking about. I guess we all make mistakes. Don't pin this one on me haha.

Steelerfreak, my apologies. I was mis-informed

I'm not very sure about unfertilized eggs one way or the other. However, parthenogenisis does apparently happen in BPs. There definitely are some very well documented cases of it happening in komodo dragons and I believe a few other reptiles in zoos.

Here is a thread that was on this forum about a female that apparently parthenogenisized (what would be the proper word?) some eggs. http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=49600

In any event, BPs don't lay eggs on a nearly every day basis like chickens do. The rare occasion when a female that has not been with a male will produce eggs is hardly enough to "get annoying". Even if it happened once a year, which is the most you can hope for with a female you are trying to breed, I wouldn't consider that a big enough factor to be concerned about.

I get my frozen food at The Mouse Factory and appreciate the quality of their product. You might want to check them out, along with others. :)
