Water bowls

What type of water bowl gives off the best humidity? ie; plastic container, glass bowl...?

It does not make a difference either way really. The thing that will make a difference is how big the bowl is, the amount of water and the placement near the uth. The closer to the uth the higher the humidity. What's the humidity at now?

a cardboard bowl... just kidding! :)

I actually don't think the material of the bowl really matters. If anything makes a difference, I think it is the surface area of the water that is open to the air... So i guess a bigger bowl = greater evaporation.

Whats your setup like?

a terra cotta bowl (unglazed-red) will work better because it is porous, and evaporated through the sides. this is why they are used to much for plants, keeps them from getting root-rot from standing water.

also, low wide with lots of surface area over your UTH

47 is not all that bad. 50-60 is gonna be the normal goal range. mine is usually at 50 or so and I don't have any shed problems. You just set it up today so you may see a fluctuation in the humidity. You can always add a real small tupperware container with a hole cut in the top with damp moss or even damp paper towels if you need it up for shedding.

This is how we have our boa and ball's cages set up; a small UTH under a low wide Exo-terra water dish. With this kind of set up, you do need to refill and clean the bowl more regularly, but helps us keep the humidity pretty good. =)

This is a great idea!! I am always wadding up paper towels to put on top of the hides to bump the humidity to the high 50's (even with a container of moss). It's so dry here in the high desert.... but I'm going to try this~ makes a lot of sense! Thanks! :)

TY works well for me too, just gotta refill water dish more:snake::snake::snake:

I know putting the water bowl on top of a UTH creates humidity but if the snake goes into that water will he get hurt or burned? I am using a mini UTH and its not that hot I put my finger in it, but it is making my tank humidity a lot better

No you won't have a problem with your snake getting burned or anything. Give it a full day and night in the tub and you should see that the humidity will take care of itself.
