Seems as though we are going to be getting check from the Federal Government as the bill was just passed today. What are you going to spend your money on?

there has been a bill that was put forward about a month or so ago for everyone to get a "check" for anywhere from $300-800 from the government to help stimulate the economy. the government did this years and years ago and they just passed the bill this afternoon. I had not heard how much it was yet but I am sure that will be all resolved over the next couple of weeks. If you work and are a tax payer then you will get one of these little checks.

so what do they consider "paying taxes" having taxes taken out of your check or oweing at the end of the year or what? cuz i would think that almost all of us are getting some sort of refund right?

and the breeders will be getting most of that refund right? LOL

"Paying taxes" means the goverment gets a chunk of your income....regardless of whether they take it out little by little from each paycheck, or you pay it all in one lump sum. If you get a "refund" each year...that's only because they took too much out of your paychecks and they have to give some of it back. It doesn't mean you didn't pay taxes.

For those who are skeptical about this...it's real. They've done it before and a check arrived in the mail just like they said it would.

Yes, they did, in 2001. So yeah, I'm sure we're all getting a check (seriously).

However, did you pay attention when you filed your tax return the next year? The "tax break" was deducted from your return. So, apparently "tax break" and "small, 6 month advance on your next return" mean the same thing.

Actually, I did pay attention and that was not the case. Nor is it to be the case this time around, either. It's a genuine rebate, and not just an advance on next year's taxes.

I received a couple of state refund checks when Jesse Ventura was Governor. Frankly the money would have been better spent fixing up the roads or not closing a few schools. When I pay my taxes, I expect to actually get some value for it, and not see it turned into a cheesy publicity stunt to boost the popularity of some politicians.

You're right, it was probably just a coincidence that my "rebate" was $300, my tax return check was $300 shorter than what I'd figured on my 1040, and when I called the IRS to find out why, they told me it was because I had forgotten to deduct the "rebate" :)

Checks are coming and the economy will be crashing even more. What are people gonna buy with the money that will help the economy? Probably nothing made in the USA(besides snakes).

I heard some politician on the radio this morning proclaim that the checks would enable Americans to keep on doing their jobs as "being good consumers."

The sad part is, he's probably right. Why on earth would anybody do anything besides spend the money as quickly as humanly possible?

If this does go through, and Mark and I get checks, we are paying off debt. Yep! It's the responsible thing to do though, as we got the stuff, and now we have to pay for it.. (I am a debt collector, can you tell?)

Yep. I am in collections, and it is staggering that we even have an economy, if the stuff I see on a daily basis is any indication of things. Everyone buys things on credit and then can't pay for them, and interest mounts up.. I am seriously unknowing how we are not in a recession.. really.

I plan on putting that money straight in the bank. I figure its money I wasn't planning on getting. So it should be treated as such.

Then on a rainy day. That much more money is available.

Some of it is going towards paying off my credit card, some into savings and with the rest of my return plus the little check I'm going to get my male sugar gliders neutered, buy the ferret a new cage and possibly get a snake, depending on how much I have left. I'm crossing my fingers in hopes of having enough to get a spider male. We have a spare tank just sitting around right now.

    The fleecing of America.....
    Well,
I guess if money is all American's want, then this sounds like a good deal. But, if you think about it, where is the money coming from? The government sure doesn't have it because we are trillions of dollars in debt. That leaves one source for the money. BORROW IT FROM CHINA? Yes, that is what the government is having to do. I am going to send mine back when I get it and attach a note telling them to put it towards paying back the money to China because I don't want to owe them anything.

What should be done is to waive the federal taxes taken out of our paychecks until the amount reaches $1000. That would mean that we wouldn't have to borrow the money. Is our government ever gonna learn? I doubt it.

Also, the Senate had to rewrite the bill before passing it because the House of Representatives did not get the wording right and it was going to allow illegal immigrants to get a check.

    This is so dumb!!!!!

China will be outproducing and will be richer than the US within 15 years. Their economy is growing by leaps and bonds while we are stuck with stagflation(economy not growing but inflation is...very bad).

The best thing for people to do with these checks is to invest part of it, if not all of it. Then pay off debts. Recommended by my personal finance professor.

It sure is amazing how many people just hear "Free money!" and get all excited, not even caring about the problems associated with it.

On the other hand.... considering how deep the proverbial doo-doo is already, we might as well just say to hell with it and enjoy the money :)
