Howq often have you been bitten??

You play with fire you get burned, you play with snakes you get bit??

I have only been bitten twice so far.

First time was by my small BP when i was feeding him.

Second happened two days ago, and I am not really sure why it happened. I was feeding my two males and had their tubs out on the ground, one on either side of my rack about 2 feet apart. They are 15qt steralites. I decided that I wanted to move the 15 to the top shelf and my large female to the bottom shelf, and since I already had the two 15's out all i had to do was pull out the 31qt and slide it in the bottom shelf. While I was pulling her out she pops her head out snifs my hand and then bites my thumb, it shocked me and i ended up launching her 5ft acrost the room cause she didn't let go of my thumb when she bit me???

I have been breeding her to my pastel male and She may have ovulated. ( not sure as this is my first time breeding) Do the females get really protective the closer they get to laying eggs? or do you think she might have smelled the mice and then bit me? I had been feeding her F/T rats by holding them by the tail in front of her. She may have thought I was feeding her???

Snake is OK by the way and my thumb will survive.

So what are your stories??

By a BP only twice.

Panzys LOL. That is cool that you haven't experienced that yet.

The first time wasn't bad cause he is small. The second was by my breeding female of 1400g. OWCH!!! And she got me on the knuckle where there is no meat just bone. :(

Did you wash your hands after handling the mice before attempting to move her? Sounds like a classic feed strike, a defensive strike is more of a bluff with a hit and release.

As for how many times I've been bitten, I'd guess six or seven times, all defensive strikes because I wasn't paying attention.

From one of my BPs, never. By my Children's Python, more times than I can count. From a 10 ft Burmese once and it HURT, dang thing had been missing for 2 months in the petstore I worked at and I was the one to find it. Hungry, right by the rat bins. It latched onto my hand, wrapped around my arm and would not let go!

I am not sure if I did or not. cause after that I put her in anohter tank and gave her a rat and she ate. I thought I had washed my hands but may not have.

5 times in 4 years (nearing 5 now, wow!) of owning snakes...3 times by my first girl--bites throughout the stages of her growth, lol, luckily even her bite when she was 2000g wasn't so bad...all three were mistaken identity feeding strikes--she's an aggressive feeder.

The other two were from my newer baby girl, the second sweetest of the lot (after the first one, lol!) and all of them were defensive after she got loose and I was chasing her down, lol. She should be named houdini; I have weights on her tub AND clasps, and she still wiggles out :confused:

Anywho...XD yay for pansy BP bites.

I've had a few minor tags here and there, but the worst bite was a 5 ft albino Burmese. He grabbed me around my middle and ring finger and proceeded to coil around my whole hand. It hurt.

Runners up were a prehensile-tailed skink and a fire skink.

With 3 BP's of varrying ages and a little over a year of keeping them, I have yet to be bitten. My spider girl likes to be a little hissy when I first get her out though.:P

I have yet to hear any hissing. Is it very noticable? Other than the two strikes through the glass at me during the first few days, our bp has not shown any aggression what so ever.

I've been bitten by snakes 3 times that I can remember. Once by a wild snake (black rat I think) that I caught to show my kids up close then released. Once by a baby king snake in a pet store. Once by our bp when she was in shed and I think I may have startled her by reaching in to her tank too quickly.

None hurt enough to count. The wild snake did open really wide and leave a big, but superficial, mark on my arm. Neat little circle of pinpricks.

Our bp did also bite my bf one time. We feed f/t and do the zombie mouse dance. One time the mouse slipped out of the tongs, and somehow in trying to pick up the mouse with the tongs, got his hand close to the snake.

To the OP: it sounds like a feeding response to me. Even if you had washed your hands, the scent was still in the room. I think a bite and hold is almost always a feeding response, but sometimes it might just be that their teeth get stuck because they do have backwards pointing teeth.

I think it's pretty noticable. It basically sounds like air escaping from a tire (though not quite that loud of volume). Not every BP will hiss all of the time. My spider female is the only one of mine that I've heard hiss so far, but that's just because she thinks that she's 'miss priss'.

been keeping for a year and a half now, never been bit or struck at, my bp is a sweetheart, not head shy, really friendly, almost like a puppy! worse bite i have ever gotten is by my 2 year old son, evil nasty bite!!!

I got bit once by a ribbon snake. He had eaten something like 5 fish the previous evening, and one was left the next day. I reached in to get it, and the little bastage hit me. I laughed and said, "Fine. Keep it."

atleast once a day on average for the last 5-6 years LOL

Been bit a few times by various critters. Once by a sub adult ball at the petstore I worked at, I got tagged when another employee had the snake out while the tanks were being cleaned. I had just finished selling some rats and mice and I worked primarily in the small animal room during that time of the day. I did not know she had the snake out, she was behind me, I reached for something and it tagged my hand. Smarts but it isn't too bad compared to having a Degu chomp through the tip of my middle finger through the fingernail. Got bit by my corn when I was younger. Been nailed by a 15" Alligator Lizard. Yeeow that bugger had a jaw!

Dogs, cats, horses, rats, ferrets, mice, various other small animals, snakes, lizards... and the worst biter is.. a horse! I have perminent nerve and muscle damage in my calf from a bite I got 2 years ago from an ornery stallion.

Even though I've not gotten bit by a snake, I agree with you about the horse! I had a mustang/arab who was an angel around me but hated everybody else. I was standing next to her shoulder, with my back to her head, pulling her winter blanket foward so I could buckle it when she reached around and bit me in the kidney area. OMG...I think I cursed in 17 different languages! She drew blood and left the biggest, nastiest bruise I had ever seen. Thankfully it wasn't any worse than that.

So, if a snake bites and won't let go, what do you do? It looks like there is a spatula or something being used in the photo above.

Once every couple of months tops...

Not often, but enough.

If they bite and don't let go, douse their head with warm water or cheap alcohol. Usually does the trick.

I haven't been bit by any of my pythons/boas yet.. those darn corn snakes get me every time!

Okay Gib if we don't have an award for Best Bite Pic Ever we should create one just for that shot LOL. I've seen bite pics but that's the best "the dang snake is still stuck on me" one yet!

Funny enough I've only been bitten once and it was barely a bite really. I was gloved, handling a big female rescue who was nutsy at the time and she got a couple of teeth through the thinner webbing of the glove right at the juncture of my thumb and forefinger. I was grabbing her, I hestitated, she schooled me on either grab the snake or don't...hesitation isn't a smart thing LOL. Heck I've been bit worse by my own children!

I'm not sure why I never get bitten really. I just seem to have good instincts about when they are going to try for a tag and get out of their reach or redirect the snake's attention elsewhere or they try and I'm fast for an old broad LOL. Who knows. I just know I don't get bit for some reason.

Of course, now that I've posted this....I'll get bit today won't I. :D

hi Scott was that from the girl you got from me. if it was she bite me once. but i have been bite a few times. even my oldest son has be bite twice once when he was 4 by a spotted python the other when he was 5 by a bp and he still love to hold them and watch them.

As for me I get bit at least once a week. Same girl every week same thing tub cleaning and pop.

I only have one snake. I have never been bitten. I have only been hissed at once (he was blue getting ready to shed and I was going to feed him.) I threw the mouse out figuring that it would just sit there anyway.

I have been bitten twice, once was when i was picking out a snake from a little, i ran my hand over it and the first to bit was the one i was gonna buy. and yes one bit me, haha. the other was one at petco, service there isnt the best so i helped my self into the bp's tank and pick one up i like and he bit me faster than anything. Almost bought him, but there way over priced.

Never. "If" one of mine was to bite me it would be a corn, not a BP. Before I knew what I was doing, I should have been bitten alot for being so stupid, but I never was. Just lucky I guess.

Now rodent bites are nasty.

I had one bad bite from my Macklott's when she was about 4". She coiled and wouldn't let go. My GTP tagged me a lot, but just quickly, never tried to eat my hand. Once quickly by a 110g female pastel, and a couple of weeks ago from my albino. Lizard bites are worse. I think my worst bite was from a juvi leopard gecko or veiled chameleon.

Yep sure was. My fault totally too. Brannagh was very defensive back then and I knew I could never hesitate when I was handling her or be less than fully confident and sure in my movements with her. I hesitated, she nailed me, it was no big deal and barely more than a couple of paper cuts. I'm so glad though we got Brannagh early in our keeping of snakes. She taught us all so much about dealing with a difficult adult safely and confidently.

Now of course she's a big old girl with a great attitude (and making with the nice nice with Riordan of course :D).

I've only been tagged twice and both times it was a Burm. The first time ( about 15 years ago ) I was looking to buy a baby Burm and was going to buy it till it bit my thumb. Second time was about 6 months ago. A friend got a 4 footer and he said it was nasty so I went to check it out and he was right. It got me.
It didn't strike, I was holding him and he just turned his head and closed his mouth on my wrist.

Tagged once, but a new addition, a very head shy adult female. An under the paper snake. I peeked under the paper, and BAM!

Never happend again, and it was the most non monentous moment of my life. Cept it gave her a soft spot and now I tend to be more in awe when I handle her and wee how far she has come.

Well at first never, last 4 months about once a week. Somehow i picked up a nasty lil bugger and sometimes he is a lil faster then me. Hope he calms down some as he gets a lil older!

i have 5 ball pythons. i have never been bit. gotten close tho! once i was fiddling in my pastel females cage doing some spot cleaning and i got too close to her hide and she struck but missed, my fault for not alerting her to my presence and donging around with a amubush predator!

now on the other hand if i do get bit i KNOW its going to be from my spider, she is the devil in snake flesh! she strikes at me from 5 feet away when feeding haha. but she is pretty mellow when i handle her. just gotta dodge the initial strikes lol.:snake::snake:

Ive been taged by my pastel, right after i got him. And my sub adult spider at the time got me full blown - constricted and everything. Didnt hurt at all, bled like crazy though. You just have to stay calm and wait it out.

Im a new BP owner and have never been bitten by my ball but I have been bitten by a couple wild snakes. (corn, chicken, ect.) What precautions can be made to prevent the occasional bite?

BTW "Chong" is only a little over a foot now.

are we only talking about snake's lol everything with teeth and some things that dont have teeth have bitten me. I gave up counting.

Not yet guy's 2 years and 12 bp's two of which are pretty aggressive and nothing. I think I'm just real careful with the ones that would try. My little lesser is a meanie , no bites yet but plenty of try's.
