What scares me most about breeding
I'm excited to have a first clutch, then god willing lots more after that. It's a long time in coming, things keep coming up and getting crazy, but I'm going to be cracking down soon. My biggest concern?
Exploding from cuteness. :nirvana:
Seriously, I may need to find myself a good heart specialist and put him on speed-dial. As is, I have 5 snakes, 1 lizard, and 4 bunnies (we're working on bonding a 4th one). I look around and the levels of cute are toxic. I could seriously explode with love. And these are all more or less adults in a fairly small collection.
I have seen baby snakes. I have cuddled them. And they are deadly adorable. Who needs venom when you have such big sweet vacant eyes and itty bitty ickle flicky tongues? A person could spontaneously combust. In fact, I'm sure that overdoses of high levels of cute is probably exactly what causes spontaneous combustion. I know, because I've come close. Reptile shows are dangerous places.
I take the nearly lethal levels of cute I live with now fairly well most of the time. But multiply this by several clutches of baby snakes at any given time as I hope to have in the future?
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I don't know how you big time breeders do it. Are there precautions that you take? What do you do to protect yourself from adorability overdose meltdowns?

Re: What scares me most about breeding
This post made me laugh!!!! I love the fact that you think baby snakes are so cute! I can't agree more. I don't care if it's an albino corn or a Kingspin Ball, they all are too cool. I think it's like an addiction, once you hatch one you just can't stop the craving to hatch more. I'm not sure that I could ever get sick of hatching any type of snake. Maybe I just have a sickness.lol I need help!!!!!!!!!Brian(BHB)

Re: What scares me most about breeding
I know a guy who knew a guy that met a guy who died from seeing to many cute snakes. So be careful.:O I always carry a mirror around to look at mine and that seems to help. Enjoy the new ones when they come.:gj:

Yeah, your in BIG trouble. :giggle:
I can't talk though, as I still haven't been able to bring myself to let even ONE of my babies go yet. I keep saying, I'll do it next week.... yeah next week.

Re: What scares me most about breeding
Hey, this is a legitimate concern people! :P We're all doomed!! :O
And yeah, I can't think of a single species of snake that isn't beautiful in it's own way, and all the babies are so cute that it burns!

I don't know how it will work for me, I'll probably find myself holding back more babies than I can let go. I already do that with the feeder rats

My own hatchlings wow I think I would have to push myself not to miss or quit work when they hatch. LOL

 I couldn't agree more about the rats. I bought a trio of dumbos from a fancy rat breeder and can't for the life of me feed any of the babies off. Thankfully I have regular rats so my snakes don't starve, but at some point I'm going to have to do something with my dumbos.
One of the hardest things to do is to sell one of my baby snakes, especially if it is a favorite. That's how our collection has grown so quickly. :D

The only thing that works is de-sensitivity training. You must expose yourself to at least 24........er, 50........ no wait, 100 babies per season to allow your overactive sympathetic nervous system (the gas pedal) to be compensated by your parasympathetic NS (the brake). Thus, you may achieve some sort of equilibrium where you still cry and can't stop smiling, but at the same time have the ability to 'function' (ie get at least 1 full hour of sleep a night).
Start by browsing pictures of clutches hatching. Take deep breaths. Good Luck.
Cheers,
Kat

Oh man. The feeling of seeing those little heads pooching out.. it is indescribable. We hatched our first ones in '07, and a cool additional thing is, Mark's daughter was staying over the night after we slit them, and they were just coming out! The biggest real "danger" is to resist the temptation to yank the little snakes out of the eggs and see their patterns!

I`m going to go nuts when my eggs hit the bator. I`ll probably check on them every 5 minutes..

Very helpful advice! A slow and careful desensitization process to gradually reduce the danger of high cuteness intakes. :gj:
