A little survey for everyone!!
This isn't really a poll, that would be kind of hard to do. Mostly because of all the possibilities.
Out of curiosity....No matter what reptiles you keep.
What is the thing you dislike, or something you could definitely do without when in comes to keeping herps??
For instance, keeping geckos. I love them dearly, but I absolutely HATE cleaning the crickets bins. It has got to be the most disgusting aspect of it all for me lol. They smell terrible, no matter how often I clean the bins that dead body smell is always there.
As far as snakes go, I hate cleaning up after exploded rats. Thats not too often though, only happened twice.
I understand that we love our reptiles, but does anyone else out there have that one part of herp keeping/breeding that you really could do with out?

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Ewwww, I'd hate exploded rats too - glad I feed live! :P
I hate, hate, hate when two or three of the snakes think it's funny to tip their water bowls EVERY....single.....night!
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I hate it when my younger corns poop in their feeding tubs. Nothing like having to move a wiggling poop covered snake. :zerb: It seems like the young ones always hold onto the poo until after they've eaten.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
The sludge in the fish filter... And feeding any reptile that requires a bug diet.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Crickets!!!.....everything about them.
.....and I hate how my monitors only have clean water bowls for about 30 minutes...makes me feel like I am an insufficient keeper when I clean and see something dirty a few minutes later.....if it isn't the soil getting tossed in by the lizards...then it is the damn crickets drowning themselves...I dislike those crickets...

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
The thing that I could really go without, is cleaning up the blood. Everytime, my big boa girls seen to just pour out the life blood of the rats....weird!
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Giving a shot to a reptile is definately my least favorite, means they are sick and not happy to get stuck:tears:
Escapee rats in the snake room always is a chore too:O
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Wow lol Sounds like I am not the only one with "pet" peeves!!
One of my female cresties, never fails as soon as I put fresh water in she poops in the water dish. Then I clean it again and she leaves it alone. Its under the repti hammock so I think she slides her butt over the edge and drops a present everytime.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I agree that escaped rats in the snake room are a pain....crickets are worse though......I think I have an established colony of escaped now feral crickets in my basement...
I also hate the smell when a snake kills but does not eat a rodent...nothing like a bloated stinky rodent in a 83 degree room.....

I had the same problem and it drove me crazy so I bought a 6" pvc tube and cut it into 2" sections that I hot glued to the bottom of all my tubs. I have round tupperware that sit in each section and I haven't had any spilled water since. You can see what I'm talking about in a lot of my pics. I know it's not original but it works.
That was my main pieve, but now it's the insects. Crickets suck and escaped fruit flies aren't fun either.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Cleaning Tuts' enclosure. He is about a 10 lb yellow foot tortoise. Craps like a dog!!! Smells worse!!:fart:
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I HATE when my BP decides to poop on my thermometer probe.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Oh, I thought of another one. When my BP poops and then smears it along the side of his tub.
Oh and when he passes gas, and it actually wakes me up in the middle of the night.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Cleaning up spilled water that I JUST put in...
Chasing after escaped rats is on my top of my peeves. Those suckers RUN FAST.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
:rage:oh you know what sucks. when my sister thinks its funny to unplug the freezer. all the f/t mice/rats stink up the entire freezer! and i have to go but some new feeders!:rage:
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
My least favorite part of keeping the snakes is feeding because I feed live and it weighs on my conscience. Every animal life is valuable to me, even if it's "just" a feeder rat.
My second pet peeve is when Harlett poops or urinates on the temp gauge. The humidity reading goes sky high and I have to let it dry out before it'll read accurately again. Not to mention, it's impossible to clean because I can't exactly soak it in hot water. >_<

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Stinky poops! I could definatly do without those. Oh and when they constrict and kill their prey and then leave it alone. :weirdface

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Spilled water dishes are my biggest pet peeve (I'm so going to try that PVC hot glue idea!). For the probes for Acu-Rites, etc. you can clean them by gently wiping with a baby diaper wipe. :)
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Oh and I forgot one. When the snake pulls the accurite thermometer into the water dish!
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Oh yeah the spill water thing is definitely on my last nerve. I just finished 3 tubs with just that problem. :slamhead:
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
i use to own a savanah monitor and when he poop it was the worst smell it would stink up the whole house.
i use to hate it when a rat got lose but know i have live traps and it's not that bad now.
and i have to agree the spilling of a water bowl right after you clean the tub is pretty bad.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I also hate it when my balls poo and then slither through it smearing it on the walls. It really makes my day :puke2:.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I love my sav, but man her poo STINKS! She is in my bedroom to boot. She has even woken me up with middle of the night poos. I don't know what is worse, the smell or the sound. :weirdface It never fails either, she goes the second I put fresh water in, and will do it again if I go out and immediatly redump the water.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
when my Bearded Dragon & Iguana poops, yes it smells. As the Iguana gets older & larger, it actually looks like a human's poop!! & it smells. & they tend to smear it all over everything!!! So far my bp is a good one, maybe cause he is still young. But I think my cats take the cake on the stinky poop, & being sooo darn messy. food dishes, food is all over, && the cat litterbox, they seem to get litter all over the kitchen. grrrr

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I hate when my pastel UR's just as I am going to bed. It is always a flood and he looks so helpless sitting on top of his hide.
He always does it right where I have the accurite attached.
I use 8oz deli cups for water and I took an empty cup and used industrial velco on the floor of the cage and back of the cup to attach it to the floor of the tub then I just pop in another cup w/ water. Never a spill and the industrial velcro (sp) I use is made for outdoors so all the cleaning in the world has yet to loosen it up and it's been over a year now. Easy pop in pop out the second cup to change water.
I do the same w/ my accurite temp gauges. Little pc of velcro on the front top of the gauge and the other along the side of the tub. Then my accurite is right along the front of the tub where I can check temps and not have to open the tub.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Remembered another one. This one is mostly due to my Tokay gecko. I just love getting up the next morning after he has had his crickets, and picking up the massacre he has left behind. Cricket legs everyone, I swear he spits them out. Cricket carcasses, mashed, like they have been chewed and spit out. Thats always fun.
I do have to say, I adore his attitude and him trying to rip my fingers off like a little skil saw when I handle him though lol.

Musical poo...that is a goood one.
I hate when mine do that but it's ur instead of poo. It's like a baby w/ a new diaper. Seems they just know it.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Mine isn't necessarily a husbandry issue.....but the publics misunderstanding/fears of reptiles in general.
IMO that is the thing I dislike the most about keeping snakes/herps. Whether it be laws changed, stereo types, bans, or making it hard to find a place to live..the list goes on.
Other than that....probably cleaning cages would be next on my list.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Crickets.... I hate crickets. They are the reason I no longer keep lizards.
Maggots.... I hate it when one of my snakes doesn't eat their rat and then lays on top of it or hides it under their substrate so I don't find it until it starts to smell and has maggots crawling on it. That just creeps me out.

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Snakes are just SO easy compared to my adult beardie was... they are a walk in the park to me! Eating and pooping once a week is like a dream :P
Adult beardie poop, ESPECIALLY after he has eaten a lot of crickets and superworms that morning - the worst is coming home to my whole room smelling disgusting. And from personal experience: Don't use paper towels/newspaper as a substrate for an adult beardie... makes the smell and the cleanup ten times worse.
Another thing... keeping large amounts of crickets (500+ in a tub or aquarium) smells TERRIBLE. Ugh... I hate crickets. Silkworms and roaches are MUCH better alternatives. (Except my mom never came around to letting me keep roaches... very silly of her, as they're not the kind that infest houses...)
Nothing against beardies, of course... I absolutely adore them! They're amazing pets with great personalities. I miss my little boy terribly :tears: (had to give him up when I moved to college.)
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I also deeply despise crickets, which is why I keep snakes lol.
I do not like escapees, and I do not like worrying if a new arrival is going to eat or not.
That's about it.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I don't know what I hate... I think nothing.
I used to have a gecko and the crix annoyed me, that's about it.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
When I kept around 80+ panther chameleons I hated the escaped crickets. Taking care of the crickets wasn't too bad, but having them escape the feeding cups of the chameleons was a huge pain. Along with just the over all amount of time the chameleons took up in caring for them.
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I loathe crickets... the sound, the smell, the feel of them. I have been trying to find a cockroach colony for over a year now to no avail.
Those nasty fruit moths(?) that I get in my mealie and super colonies make me nuts. If there is an open bottle of wine anywhere in the house they just HAVE to duck in to investigate and then promptly drown.
Semi-brumated dragons that only poop once a week (or more). If there is anything stinkier than dragon poop I have never smelt it.
Nothing about the snakes really bugs me. Or the rats for that reason.
Oh... not true. My milksnake and her musking. I think it is positively foul. And she is fast... so on occasion she darts out of my hands and is on the run. A python on the run, easy enough to deal with, a corn snake, not so bad... a milksnake *HMPHHHH!*

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Actually, I don't mind the cricket bin... I kinda even like the sound! No real complaints with the snakes, I do wish they wouldn't poo on the edge of their hides
My biggest "pet-peeve" w/ herps!?!? Cleaning glass. Some of my Cresties are in mostly screen, but some are in Exo-terras... because of the misting, the glass gets cloudy. Cleaning the glass on the frogs too... not my fav....

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
1. Worrying about my snakes' health (like the hard to beat URI or bad sheds).
2. Getting bitten by our JCP. See #1, if he has a bad shed, we are doomed!! Bite, bite, bite!
3. Worrying about whether I am really following proper and effective quarantine procedures (see #1!).
4. Feeling like I have to wait to get another snake (my husband's patience will only go so far with my obsession).
5. Worrying that one day, my husband will finally say, "NO more reptiles - ever! We are full up!"
6. Given #4 and #5, feeling indecisive about what reptile to get next. If there is a limited number, I better choose well!
Edit: Did I mention that I'm a worrier?
-
Re: A little survey for everyone!!
I don't like bugs. So I stay away from reptiles that require bugs as a diet.
I hate it when I get a perfect shed along with a present in it, which is then smeared all of the snake in question.
Shots are the worse. My helper has a fear of being bite so will hold them, but not as tight or correctly. I haven't learned to give shots w/o a buddy to hold the reptile.

YES there is, when they drop it in the water bowl!!!!!!!!!!

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Nothing really bothers me about my snakes, besides the fact that I learned that Charon (since he's a male Hognose) might not even reach 20 inches in length! I can't believe that I just purchased the smallest snake you can get in captivity:mad:!

Re: A little survey for everyone!!
Cleaning after my iguana is the worst. for some reason he likes to pee on the front window, i cant stand it, he is pretty good at pooin in one spot though but then he usually walks through it and smears it. And my water dragon likes to poo in fresh water, hes never gone poo in water more than 12 hours old. Sometimes hell sit and watch and right when i put the water back in hell go poo in it and I change it again right then and he goes back in it and just sits.
