Harlan Teklad
I've been scouring the web for Harlan Teklad info on purchasing it. So far, some ratteries order in bulk for their members, and you can also purchase online from a few ratteries. What it comes down to is paying anywhere from $30-$60(!) for a 33 lb bag online, and anywhere from $11-$25 from the local rat groups (although I would have to drive to Detroit to get it: 2 hrs away).
The Harlan website is pretty useless, and I've emailed 2 different Harlan email addresses now on dealers/vendors, or purchase order minimum.
Does anyone know the information on if I can purchase directly from Harlan, and the cost to do so?

Re: Harlan Teklad
I called them a couple of years ago. When I called then they were willing to sell out of their manufacturing plant in WI, however it would have been an 8 hour drive for me so I went looking for other options. I have heard that they have since stopped selling from their plant.
When I talked to them they were very vague about giving me a price saying that it depended on the quantity I was willing to buy and that I needed to set that up with one of their sales managers whom I never got a number for. I had mainly called to find if they had a distribution center closer to me, which they didn't, so I didn't pursue it any further.
Sorry, but I've long since lost the phone number I first called.

Re: Harlan Teklad
On different areas on their site, they have the "special" feed that they make up for you, the minimum purchase order for that is 3kg. It would be great if the minimum was a 33 lb bag! A few rat group websites reference saying that the minimum was 33 lbs direct from harlan. I have a hard time believing that until they get back to me.
I really don't like dealing with rat groups, I'm afraid I would really like the Harlan, and they find out I breed for feeders, and pretty much dump me. Or I might get egged going to get the feed....
I'm willing to purchase a large amount (large as in 6 bags LOL)... You'd think they would be more than willing to sell such an awesome feed when the market is there... Might have to make another trip down state. :rainon:

Re: Harlan Teklad
To buy direct from Harland, the minimum purchase order is $1000. Anyone wanna chip in lol?

Re: Harlan Teklad
The min was $150 (and still is for old customers here in florida) until February 1st and then it will go up to $1,000 for pick up orders. I just ordered the paper bedding from cageliners.com to test is out to see if I like it or not. As I don't have rats anymore I only order shreaded aspen so I'd need to get 125 bags at a time.:8:

So, how many bags do you get for $1000? I actually might be interested depending on the price per bag. Maybe we could get a buying club together or something like that.

Re: Harlan Teklad
I'm assuming 100 bags at that price. If the rat club that I know of, they all pay 10.60 per 33lb bag. It may even be cheaper than that. Do I need to call them back? I was definitely interested, there has got to be at least 10 other rodent breeders in my area, I can definitely use 10 bags if we only order once in a while.
This is what I'm going off of price wise...

Re: Harlan Teklad
Well, I could probably go through about 6 or so bags a month. It would be nice to be able to lay in about a 6 month supply so that would be 35-40 bags. I've used the 2018 before, I can buy it here from a local pet store but it's over 20 bucks a bag from them.

Re: Harlan Teklad
My price is $9.59 per 33 pound bag.

Re: Harlan Teklad
I'm going to call them back... the Rat group I know of needs a $450 minimum purchase order. They are in the detroit area...
If anyone around the Michigan Flint,Tri-city area wants to get in on some Harland Tekland feed or bedding, I'm seriously considering bulk ordering sometime. Even down towards Detroit for the Taylor show, or west to the Grand Rapids show. If there are enough people willing to go in on this, I will go ahead and purchase it.
Again, if you want a pretty comprehensive list of products, check this out

Re: Harlan Teklad
If you can get the info on how many bags of 2018 you could get for that $1000.00 I'd appreciate it. I realize you're too far away from me to go in on an order with, but maybe I can locate some people around here to split costs with also. I guess the drive to their plant wouldn't be that bad if I only had to do it a couple of times a year, but then there would be the problem of figuring out the logistics of transporting and storing nearly 2 tons of feed. Could you also ask what the shelf life is of their feeds? Does it have an expiration date?
Mark
BTW interesting web site, even if we do violate some of the major points in their code of ethics.

Re: Harlan Teklad
Well, I know that their products shelf life listed on their web site is 6 months from the manufactured date on the bag. That's assuming it's kept cool and dry and away from other wild rodents.
I also believe they ship to you, I will ask about the specifics tonight when I get out of work.
And yes, they are rattie lovers. I would feel weird about dealing with them, as I know they would ask questions about my rats, and I ain't gonna lie to them....
Here is there toll free number: 1-800-483-5523, press #1 for customer service. They will ask for personal or petstore/retail use. I have no idea what the retail minimum is.

Re: Harlan Teklad
I know the feed store here in Belair MD carries that kind of feed. It's under a different name (Sand Valley Rodent Feed) but it is made by HT. It's like $13 for a 40lb bag.
I'd call around to local feed store and see if they carry HT or HT under another name insted of needing a X amount of dollars in order before you can but it. Thats a bit crazy in my eyes.

Re: Harlan Teklad
