WARNING! courtesy of local petstore cashier
So, I was in the local PetSmartCo, and picked up some new female rats - 3 rex and 1 dumbo. They were all housed together in the store and I had the clerk put them all in the same box. Got to the cash register, and the cashier asked if the dumbo was in the box with the rexes. I told him "yes, it is." He said "You might want to separate them as soon as possible. They'll fight and kill each other."

Wow. I never knew that dumbos and rexes had it in for each other! Good thing he told me, I had planned on keeping them together. Which reminds me, I need to check all my cages to be sure that I don't have any other dumbos and rexes housed together!?!?!?!?

I'm left wondering if its because curly haired rats don't like big eared rats, or the other way around?

    Steve

P.S. I considered playing dumb... giving the type of response demonstrated above. But, me being me, I told him that no, dumbos and rexes do NOT have a problem getting along. I seriously doubt that they even recognize a difference! Yes, new introductions can cause some fighting while the rats establish their heirarchy, but once thats settled, they should be fine. AND, these were already housed together, so they're ALREADY fine!!! Not sure he believed me.

Where do they get it? Myths. Plain and simple. If they hear it, especially from lots of other people, then it must be true. And there are TONS of myths out there about rats and snakes...

And the truly ignorant will never listen to or believe those who try and correct them. :) This goes for both customers and employees...trust me. I heard some real doozies working at Petsmart. Especially since I made it my 'mission' of sorts to help others understand that rats were the best pet for young children(at least, out of what we carried), not hamsters. I had a fair number of successes, but some people... oh man. :)

I do admit, tho, that I had never heard someone claim that different breeds of rat would 'fight and kill each other' if kept together. That's one for the books.

What... You didn't notice when you bought them that the Rexes were wearing little red shirts and the Dumbos were wearing little blue shirts? Whoa, you better separate them now before they get into a turf war on who gets to sell drugs to the hamsters.

Well you know how it is, it starts with a few insults

“you’ve got ugly ears” than the other rat says “you’ve got ugly hairs” than they start fighting

Come to think of it, I have noticed a "nose in the air" attitude with some of the rexes.

I can just see the small animal specialist pouring over the corporate guidelines for information about how to handle that!

And here I thought they were just well dressed?????

I love it! The dumbos vs the rexes about selling rights to the hamsters!!! LOL!!! Now I know the origins of that hamster dance thing!

Guess I'm gonna have to find a CD of Ray Stevens singing "Everybody's Beautiful". Change starts with ME!!! I'm gonna fix this! Rats all over the world will be holding little rat hands and living in harmony!

Thanks everyone for making this thread so much fun!!!

I thought about that too! What about litters where you've got dumbos and rexes together? Or worse yet, a dumbo rex? Poor rat hates itself!
