    This Rat Too Big? (Picture)
This is a small rat. The snake is a little over two feet. The snake is larger than the rat in girth, but I'm worried that the rat is too long. Any comments?

    Thanks,

It's hard to tell from the picture, but the rat looks to be on the large side. I have no doubt that the snake can eat it, but I think he would be pretty sedated for a few days lol.

If you think it's too big, then it probably is. ;)

    Gotta agree with Connie,

Why not try a weaned rat and see how it goes.

I agree with Pat. It looks just as fat as the snake does, but I probably wouldn't go any bigger then that!
I've heard feeding small meals more often is better then feeding large meals less often! Not really sure the exact reason behind it! Something to think about!

The snake is actually slightly larger around then the rat. I have been feeding him adult mice but those are now way too small. The petstores around don't have anything to fill the gap between large mice and small rats. I might just try 2 large mice if the majority of the responses agree that this rat is too big. He might not even take the rat anyway.

Would there be any danger in feeding him the rat? It looks really big to be, but this is my first snake so I'm second guessing myself.

The only danger or harm I can think of is a regurge. He looks like he can get it down, but if his body can't handle it, he will regurge.

It's sort of a poor picture to go off of though, if he were stretched out next to it, many of our opinions may change.

well if the snake is truely bigger around than the rat, uncrompress, i would say that it SHOULD be fine.

His snake honestly looks to be 600 grams. Probably less.

That rat looks perfect for the size your snake, I started my 5month BP on small rats it takes him a few days to digest after that it is back to normal and hungry again, so since your snake is way bigger and the rat's girth is smaller than the snake's you should have no worries at all ;)
My snake is 180 g (net weigh ) . It's been eating small rats for a while and I've never had a regurge.
Keep the temps up and no handling for 4 days after that meal.

I don't think his snake is WAY bigger than the rat. The rat is closer to a medium/ or a small sized large.

If he has doubts about the rat fitting in the stomach, how can you be so sure that the snake is SOOO much bigger than the rat? Especially when the picture has a coiled snake?

I still think we need a better picture for a more definite answer. Maybe even a weight on the snake.

I dunno with the way that snake is balled it may look thicker than it really is. If we had a picture of him fully extended I think the rat would look much larger than it does now. Also when you feed big prey items you increase the chances of your snake fasting and going off feed for extended periods. A fast is not horrible but you do need to know what you're looking for and when to worry concerning lost body weight. I'd rather feed smaller all year round than have to deal with a fast for 6 to 8 months out of the year.

So, is it too big or just right? I'm starting to think its a pretty good size, its just so big compared to the large mice that I've been feeding him.

    Thanks again,
    Austin

I think the rat looks perfect for ur BP. mine is about the same size as urs and she takes rats a little bigger.

    I think that is perfect!

After the food is in the belly, it does get compressed a little bit, so IMO I think you should be good on that size for a while!

I fed my snake the rat last night. He struck at it with little reluctance. After he constricted, it did take hime a while to decide how to eat it! I'm just glad he switched from mouse to rat so easy. Hopefully he will be ready to eat next week.

    Thanks for the advice everyone,
    Austin
