Picky breeder?
I've placed my het pied female and het pied male together since Nov 1st. I've only seen one lock up between the two of them. She doesn't seem to want anything to do with him. He tries and tries but she just ignores all of his advances and moves to the other side of the tub. He seems to get fed up with her moving away from him and kind of seems like he just "gives up".
When I see him by himself on one side of the tub for more then a day, I put him back in with my other breeding normal female. Those two go at it and are locked up in no time when I place them back together. I've seen at least 7 locks between those two.
Any idea why my het pied girl is being a prude? Any ideas or tips to get her to get in the mood?
If she doesn't go this year, that is fine... but I did buy her as an adult this past winter so I could breed her this breeding season. So it's a bit of a bummer knowing my het males parts seem to work fine, it's just her who doesn't want any part of it. Kind of wondering now if maybe she's a non breeder even though I was told she "liked the boys" and had produced before.
I don't mind at all if I get 50% het pied. I'll be happy to prove them out in a few years. I was just kind of really hoping to see a little pied this year. But now I'm having my doubts that's going to happen. :tears:

does that routinely work for "picky" breeders? not questioning the suggestion just trying to learn as much as possible when my time for breeding bp's comes along.

Re: Picky breeder?
I have one pastel female that is very picky when it comes to her fellas. I've been trying to mate her with my cinny male for the past two years, and she doesn't want to have anything to do with him. He will breed with any other female, and last year I placed my male pastel in with her and they went at it immediately but she didn't produce any eggs because I was really trying to get pewters and she only bred that once. I must have placed my cinny in with her a dozen times but she was just never interested.
This year is pretty much the same story. However, I did get her to breed with my cinny once by placing him in with her as soon as she was finished breeding with my male pastel. I'm going to try it again this week as the pastel pair should be finished with their lock today, but that seems to be the only way I can get her to mate with my cinny.
I guess if people and other animals can get picky about their mates, why can't snakes? :P

I'm not sure how routinely it works for others. But it sure works for me..

Re: Picky breeder?
thanx. I'll file this away for future reference and looking forward to seeing what you've got going in the hatchery :D

Re: Picky breeder?
I got a question, I only have 2 BP's so are my odds less to have a lock up next year?

Re: Picky breeder?
Nope. This is both my male and normal female's first time. Both of them are going at it left and right.

Great suggestion John. I've heard a few breeders mention this little trick and it does seem to work. We have one of our three females that are slated for our male YB acting a bit stand offish with him so I think we'll likely try this ourselves next week if she keeps it up. :)

Re: Picky breeder?
Have they been together continuously? I like to put them together for a few days, seperate, feed if needed, and repeat. If I see nothing the first time, then next time it is like a fresh slate, and usually then they are locked.

Well there must be something to this idea that I keep hearing about that sudden changes in weather trigger breeding activity. Our weather here in Toledo just went through a huge change in the past 36 hours. I put two of my snakes together that ignored each other last time and literally within minutes they were all over each other! :)
Think it's time for me to more closely watch the weather forecasts.

Re: Picky breeder?
It might have something to do with barometric pressure?

I actually had to do this with my pinstripe male cause he refused to go near one of the pastel girls, but would lock with a normal no problem. IT WORKS!!!
