Scabbing/dryness on head?

My BP seems to have developed some crusty scales on his head. Almost looks like a little 3-6mm diameter scab. I am certain it is from lack of humidity (been between 30-40 percent often), due to the winter time and my heat being on most of the day drying out the air. I have tried my best to keep humidity up and unfortunatly he has developed this condition. I have not noticed anything different with his behavior. Temps are on. Nothing for him to get burned on. Also I have seen no more scars/imperfections on his body.

Has anyone else had experience with this? Will it heal eventually with correct humidity over time? Anything?

My snake has something similar but was told it is dry skin. Looks like a tiny group of scales that appear rough to the touch. Anyway I put a little bit of Nivea Moisturizing lotion on that area every few days , seems to be getting better. But like I said the guys over here said that this is nothing to worry about and will most likely go away or get better with the next shedd. Post some pictures if you got any , and I will try to take some too.

It could also be possible that your snake is rubbing his head on something in his enclosure thats causing some irritation. Keep an eye on it and make sure you bump your humidity up with the next shed. It should either heal up completely or decrease in size.

with the humidity so low thats almost certainly your problem. If you dont get the humidity up soon that scaley head could very easily develop into an RI. What are you housing your snake in? Also think about investing in a humidifier for your room. If you live somewhere where humidity is always going to be a problem in the winter months your investment will pay off in the long run.

instead of buying a room humidifyer you can get a special reptile humidifyer just for the enclosure (Petco sell them) Personaly this was a better solution for me , otherwise I would have mold problems in my room since I live in finished basement.

I've used the ones from petco n theyll do the job as long as you have plexi glass or something over the top to hold in the humidity. I didnt get a huge increase in humidity but it got me above 50%. If its just one snake itll cost ya 35$ (20 humidifier 15 air pump)... If its more than one snake its worth your money to get a room humidifier.

Don't snakes get RI's from low temps and high humidity, not the other way around?

I understand proper temps and humidity. He is kept in a tub, but my humidity hasn't been a problem til until recently.

I have considered the rubbing. But I don't think this is the problem as his pits are looking fine.

I'm not sure if my BP would enjoy the skin moisturizer. I guess we will just have to wait until he sheds. I do get the humidity right during shed time, of course. Haven't had a bad shed yet.

Nope a snake can def get an RI from humidity being too low. My first ball got an RI in about a months time bc I was using the dial humidty readers and thought I was good... Put in a digital one... yeaa 38% is not good. After a vet visit and the 5 shots I had to give, he was good to go. Long story short my temps were perfect but I was using a glass tank with a red heat light and my humidity was way too low.

I say you just let it be... get it up for the next shed and youll be fine. I personally wouldnt use any lotions either.

Do you have holes drilled into the tub? I ask because, in my experience, tubs have more of a problem with retaining too much humidity, as opposed to causing low humidity. I use newspaper substrate myself, but you can crumple a few pieces (if you use it) and spray them down nicely with water.. that should help. Of course you do not want a sopping wet bottom substrate..
During shedding time, I really raise the humidity in my tubs, to the point that there's condensation on the sides of them.

Yea I have holes in my tub. I have him on coconut husk substrate. I spose I will just have to spray more.

I also have digital temp and humidity gauge.

i love my snake but its head is dry and scabby too. any help?!

can someone please help me i'm worried about my snake just like the thread starter.

Second to last shed was a difficult one, a result from low humidity. There appeared to be residual, individual scales where the scales did not shed. I decided to wait for the next shed, thinking these would come off. :(

The next shed was textbook, as the humidity in the new tank maintains between 50%-60%. The individual scales did not come off with this most recent shed, however. :confused:They remain dull and wrinkled in appearance. I tried rubbing petroleum jelly (I figured this would be better than fragranced lotions) with Q-tips on each scale, hoping this would help. No such help. And now she's gone off feed on top of this.:weirdface I'm thinking it's the weather; snowing outside and the such.... Temps are good though, 80-95 degrees on the warm side.

Any suggestions out there on how to get these old scales to come off? :(She is most definitely not a soaker....

I was under the assumption that, they got RI from low temps not low humidity.:confused:. Ive never dealt with RI so just curious.

I noticed a similar phenomenon on my bp recently - about a week later, he shed and now it's not there. I thought maybe it was just part of the shed cycle....and dry weather - although my humidity has been OK with lots of work!

so my bp had some dry skin on his nose and i put some snake oil on his nose and body and kicked up the humidity a lil bit but it went a way in a couple days. i dont know if you would want to do that or the temperment of your bp. but its up to you. good luck with that though

I thing in a few sheds it will be fine, like I said before mine had it worse and it got significantly better with the last sched the nivea moisturizing lotion helped I think.
