Any musicians here suffer from GAS?
    No not this kind! http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/a...05F155F6-1.gif

This kind...Gear Acquisition Syndrome or specifically in my case Guitar Acquisition Syndrome.

    I'm drooling for this 7 banger! http://www.drumcityguitarland.com/dr...r-P24C425.aspx

A friend of mine had this custom made but it showed up with different specs from his order so he passed on it. http://www.drumcityguitarland.com/dr...-P642C427.aspx

This one has had my eye for a long time but the price on it is salty! :weirdface

A friend of mine is getting one of these... Santa is being very kind.
    http://www.harfen-centrum-poralla.de...inerva_big.jpg

But I don't think Santa could fit it into his bag (or budget!) for me. Plus, it's a little too feminine for my taste. 23k gold plating not withstanding... :nerd:

Instead, I am getting some new music and a book about the history of the instrument. :D

Maybe next year I'll ask Santa for this... after Santa wins the lottery. :please:

Yup you and your friend have it much worse than I do. :8:

How long have you been playing?

I wish they made a high-end flying V 7-string. I almost bought a Jackson King V last month but they changed the fret wire to this really thin yet tall frets. Plus the frets stuck WAY out and annoyed me to death so I passed on it.

Ah.. beautiful instruments are artworks within themselves. Makes me miss my '02 Les Paul Studio, in wine red. Sadly, had to sell her to buy a stupid truck that wasn't even worth it.. that guitar just sang.
That bites about the Jacksons, Vom. My husband had a special Jack that was just awesome to play. It was transparent black.. fret action was absolute butter. That was another thing we had to sell along the rocky road that we were travelling.. I suffer from has-owned-instrument syndrome :*(
My prize posession is this: 60s (?) vintage Bantam Bass Fender amp. With tubes. This amp saw countless barroom shows, was brought all over the place; my dad was in a classic-rock cover band. Never made it big, but he was one of those true musicians. I wish I had something to plug into her.. weeps..

I have BAS! Bass Aquisition Syndrome :P

I've just been dying to get a Musicman Stingray Bass, same one that Flea of RHCP uses.

They don't come with medium frets anymore? I sold off my KV2 a few months ago, mine was an older one, and I doubt I'll ever purchase a Jackson again. No matter how many pup changes I made it's tone was dull. I went from the TB-4 to a Dimebucker to an EMG 85 to an 81. Nothing could cure it.

    How about a white 7 banger V? http://espguitars.com/images/gallery...ef-white-v.jpg

    Black? http://espguitars.com/images/gallery...ef-black-v.jpg

    WOH!! Those harps... OMG...

Well, I have always suffered from that syndrome...since I've always been poor. :) The best instrument I have currently is my pear wood soprano recorder.

If we're talking about what we want, however, then this is the pinnacle of instrument for me. If I ever have a house, I will have a music room and something like this will be the centerpiece:

    http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x...arpsichord.jpg

My favorite instrument, the harpsichord. That one is from the 1600's: Yale Ruckers 1640 harpsichord, from http://www.ctearlymusic.org/schedule.../muselaar.html
And, since I know two people right now who have built their own, it shouldn't be too hard to get one once I have the monetary means. :) Mine would be a deep red wood, though, with Celtic engravings.

Oh no, I'd not classify it as 'better' or 'worse'. In my experience, every musician cares passionately about their instrument, and financial burdeons notwithstanding (which I understand is what you were referring to), they are all equally beautiful in their own unique ways. If only they could be equally priced! :P I could not compare the beauty of a harp to the elegance of a well crafted guitar, or piano, or the harpsichord.

A friend of mine has a hand crafted mahogany electric guitar - it is quite stunning, and makes me wish I could make it sing. I believe that, aesthetics aside, this is the magic within any well crafted instrument that was created with love; it has the power to inspire the soul just by looking at it.

To answer your question, I started in August 2006. Prior to this I had not touched an instrument, or read a note of sheet music. However, I am currently playing Grade 6 pieces and I am in training for my Grade 4 certificate from the Royal Conservatory of Music. My parents were kind enough to offer music lessons on several occasions when I was a child, piano and flute as well as a few others, but I refused because I was terribly shy. Oh if only I had a time machine!

Here is a video of Deborah Hanson-Concert playing "The Nightingale", the first full instrumental piece I learned. She wrote it for her mother after her passing. She is playing an Electric Harp, (I thought you'd get a kick outta that!) and is a great performer... 'the Nightingale' starts at 2:20 in if you don't want to listen to the background story/song.

Very sweet! I've always loved J.S. Bach's Allegro I. from Brandenburg Concerto No. 5. The harpsichord is clearly audible throughout and it features a 3min solo toward the end. Great stuff!

I meant the GAS pains. I hang out with alot of players and usually the more expensive an item is, the more we want it, the harder it is to buy, the worse the GAS. It's all in how we refer to it. Sorry I didn't mean to throw you off. :)

That's some really cool stuff. I wish I knew more about other instruments so I could appreciate how hard it is to learn and play them. I'm just a crazy metal head

I've got about 23 years of fret time give or take. God that makes me feel old. :weirdface

Re: Any musicians here suffer from GAS?
Hehe... don't. I have about 25 or more years of piano time, and 20 of recorder. I only play both for fun or to figure out the notes of a song, so I'm in no way at performance level with them, but that's how long I've been a musician.

My performance level instrument is my voice...FYI. The only one that doesn't take a ton of money to upkeep. :D
