I've converted from tank to tub (q's)
After months of fiddling with my temps and struggling with humidity, I bought a sterilite tub today. Honestly, it looks nicer and cleaner then my tank did.
Anyhow, its a 15 gallon. I drilled holes in the top, and now I'm wondering that is a problem. I can't seem to get the ambient temp up. Warm side is 93.5 under the paper towels. The ambient is still only 75. Humididty is 66%.
Would it be better to get a new lid and drill holes in the sides of the tub? Any other suggestions for ambient temp?
Thanks!!!

everyone is going to disagree, but 75 is fine for an ambient temperature.

Ive been keeping her at this ambient for over two years with no problem. My vet said it was fine and he keeps his reptiles on the cooler end as well. She still has a 88 degree basking spot so she can warm up if she gets too cool.

Thanks, but I would still like to get the ambient temps up.
Any suggestions?

Raise the temperature of the room the snake is in

You could use a heater to heat the room around the tub. I like the radiator-type, plug-in, oil-filled ones. Many, many experienced breeders and keepers use them with great results.

Thanks for the suggestions. I put tape over some of the holes, and the ambient is now up to 80.6. I'm going to keep an eye on it and see if I need to cover a few more holes.

Tape is not a good thing!:colbert:

I think she means taped the OUTSIDE of the holes. :)
From what I know of tubs, and yes I use them but mostly on my rodents, the holes are best set around the upper sides. Since heat rises, holes in the top sides don't let as much get out as holes in the lid. Also, making sure the room temp is near where you want the ambient is a good idea.

I know what she meant.. Ever see a snake flick it's tongue? Hole + tape = OUCH!

Re: I've converted from tank to tub (q's)
The holes are tiny. I do not melt the whole tip of the soldering iron into the hole; maybe I was unclear. I use the masking tape that is pretty cheap and not that sticky, as if I used stickier tape, it'd be hard to remove.
If you're scared of tape, you can use newspaper (inside) to innerly cover the holes. If yor substrate is already newspaper, this is easy; just make the paper go up and over the lip of the tub (in a rack; nto sure how non-rack users would do this.)
edit: Don't tape the newspaper inside of the tub! I would never use tape inside of the tub.

Re: I've converted from tank to tub (q's)
Better yet: I could revise it to make sure that no one's snake's tongues become taped. Tape a square of plastic to the outside of the tub, over the hole; plastic like the clear kind found in packaging of kids' toys; great way to recycle too! Cut the plastic into a square, and tape it over so that there is something in between the tape and tub.

lol.. I posted awhile about putting tape over holes for humidity, and I guess that I thought that your reply was for me, Jas. I hope that we have all cleared this up. I would not want any snakes' tongues getting stuck to tape, in all seriousness.

Re: I've converted from tank to tub (q's)
How about placing some newspaper over the top of the lid, where the holes are, and then taping it down?
That way the hole is covered, and the snake has no danger
of getting his tongue stuck. :D

Oh, yes, I mean on the OUTside of the box. The BP cannot get to the tape at all!

Not at all Jen, I really dont remember your post on tape.. If anyone wants to use it fine with me. I wont!

Re: I've converted from tank to tub (q's)
It is hard to 'splain. I kind of bubble it over the hole so that it is not touching the tub. But I am definately not an advocate of using any tape at all in any cages.
