Adopt a Pet
I just wanted to bring to our attention that there are many good rescue groups out there struggling to find homes for their unwanted Herps.
I was searching the classifieds today, and came across Petfinder. The group I was particularly looking at was a local herp rescue, and they have such a wide variety of animals. I think I saw some nice RTB boas, beardies, a couple BP's, adult iggies, some Chameleons. And of course, many many turtle and tortoises.
I honestly looked for a BP from a rescue before we bought our first one. I think rescue is a very standup thing. Why not keep them in mind before rushing out to buy from a pet store? If I didn't have such a full room now, I would definitely consider one of the RTB's or Dragon or Tegu. They have at least 5 species that I have considered keeping. Giving an animal a forever home and good husbandry is totally worth it in my book.
Just something I wanted to say and point out. :)

Yes, there are a lot. And the first 2 1/2 pages are just from my tri-city area. So many herps just in my neighborhood. Imagine whats in your area.

I love the once-a-day clickable donations that site has. I do them all the time.

Petfinder doesn't do any adoptions...it merely provides space for rescue groups to advertise the animals they have available. Each adoption is handled individually by the rescue group that has taken responsibility for that animal. You can find their contact info in the lower right hand area of the animal's page.

It's depressing.
For every one that makes it into rescue, dozens more die in the shelter. A lot of the shelters in the south have a 90% or higher kill rate.
I work with several rescue groups that pull dogs from high-kill shelters and funnel them into no-kill rescues in other states, via volunteer transport drivers. As a result, I get a lot of e-mails with long lists of faces and bios, all marked "Ugent! Will be euthanized if not claimed by tomorrow". There are hundreds of them every week, and that's just in the tiny area I monitor. We only save a fraction of them...there's just nowhere for them to go.
I urge anyone reading this to consider fostering in-home. That's probably our biggest limitation in choosing to pull a dog. We just don't have the homes lined up to take them, and have limited resources to pay for them to be boarded. Very few rescue groups are lucky enough to have the funding for a facility to house them. We are dependant on volunteers to house and care for them until they get adopted. And sadly, the number of people willing to step and do that is far below the number of dogs in need.

Re: Adopt a Pet
Don't forget your local herp society everyone!
I got one of my burms from MHS and would do it again in a heartbeat if I had the room.

Re: Adopt a Pet
OK You have persuaded me. I registered with Petfinder. I have contributed $$ for years to animal shelters for years and did a short stint as a volunteer at one. I had always been involved with dogs. I have placed many stray dogs over the years with family and friends. Maybe I will adopt a snake from the one place that I see with reptiles in Michigan.

Too bad there is no RTBs localy for addoption.

Re: Adopt a Pet
My friend worked with a local rescue called Paws of Gold (not sure if she still does.) They posted on Petfinder. They'd help out dogs in parts of the country that needed homes; and, they would drive them to/from pickup points if the new owners or fosterers could not make it all the way, and needed help. My friend also fostered countless dogs and cats. At one point, her barn looked like some sort of dog kennel! She has had to cut back b/c of family, work, etc. but still helps. I greatly admire her for it.

Re: Adopt a Pet
Thanks for the link. We were thinking of getting a friend for our young ferret in the future and had no idea there was a ferret rescue in the area.

Re: Adopt a Pet
Rescuing is a great thing. I want to get a Doberman eventually, and plan on looking into rescues. But I know that they are prone to hip problems. Maybe buying from a breeder would be better, so that the animal's lineage would be known? Not sure yet..
I got my cat as an 8-year old that no one wanted to adopt, from the SPCA. People were grabbing kittens by the handful but poor Inky was ignored. Now, at 13 years of age, he is my little shadow and I love this cat!

Re: Adopt a Pet
I'll admit, I'm one of those people that look at all the kittens and not the older cats. BUT, I have talked with my fiance and we have decided that once we have a house and the space, we are going to adopt adult cats that no one wants and give them a nice home.

Re: Adopt a Pet
I look for BP's on there all the time; the only reason I havent got one from a shelter or rescue yet is because they dont ship, and there all to far for me to drive to pick up.
Its ironic you started this thread today- a few hours ago I was looking on there and though, once again no close BPs, there was some nice boas and turtles :)

Re: Adopt a Pet
Yes, I'm right in town with the mid-michigan reptile rescue, but we dont need any more normal males at the moment. I am always willing to help people find new animals though :)

Re: Adopt a Pet
