Lost for 3 weeks

My blotched granite burmese escaped about 3 weeks ago and I was so upset and litterally tore the house apart. I just went to move some stuff off the file cabnit and got the scare of my life lol. She was curled up under the lactose shirts I had set out as gifts. I put the whole box there 2 weeks ago after cleaning out a closet looking for her. She was not there last night. I am so freaking happy to have found her right now. I am getting her meal ready and then shes going back in a new secure viv i purchased just for when we found her.

haha, what kind of shirts were they? glad you found her safe and sound.

She must not be very big yet, hehe....glad you found her!

About 2-3 feet right now so not real big yet which made it even harder to find her. They were the lacoste polos that are meant to be gifts lol. THe funny thing is the day she got out I found a full shed from her behind the big screen tv and the filing cabnit is in the den area lol.

Congrats on finding her! Believe me, the big ones escape the eye as well! I had a 10' Burm escape before. I didn't find him for a good week. I went to clean some cages and found he had buried himself in one of the rubbermaid's full of Mulch! How he managed to squirm in there and bury himself, without a trace is beyond me.

Congrats on finding him. I know I have had a snake get out but that was the last!

Now I am not here to bash you but I have read a couple threads and with you 3 year old daughter taking a snake out, and then having it be on the loose for so long I thought I would put my :twocents:.

And reading through the animals you have most notably the burm and the water monitor these are animals that absolutely should have some secure cages. AP, Boaphile and the like all are amazing cages that provide great security to you and your animals.

Just curious as to what you plan on housing your burm and water monitor in when they become "bigger".

Just looking out for the welfare of you, your daughter and your animals.

hahah that is awesome! I lost my male kenyan sand boa a couple weeks ago and thought id never find him but he was under my other cage.

Great post, Mike, I have many of the same questions/concerns here.

I'd also caution against immediately feeding that snake. It's been under stress, loose for 3 weeks, temps out of whack. I would think it would be better to let it settle back into it's home, warm back to it's proper temps, have fresh water, etc. then offer feed in a couple of days to a week.

As stated in my first post I went out and bought a new viv just for her that is locked and my daughter is unable to open up. As for when the 2 big animals get bigger I have already hired a contractor to start building large enough cages for them so that I am not trying to find something later on. We have a room that is being dedicated to just these 2 for the x-large cages they require. As for feeding her I offered a small meal since it has been a month since she ate. Out for almost 3 weeks and then it was feeding day when she escaped. She took the meal and then went to the warm side of the new viv and hid. She has been in her water dish already drinking and soaking. I am leaving her alone for at least a week to adjust to the new home and from being out for so long.

Looks like they will have some very suitable enclosures when the time comes!!

Glad she is back, and would love to see some more pictures as she grows!

How about feeding them?

Burms take up a good amount of money for feeding with rabbits costing an average of $1.50-$2.00 a pound. A large 100lb burm will need a 10lb rabbit atleast once every other week. So you're looking at $15-$20 for one feeding, and if fed once every other week that's $30-$40+/- per month. And year-round you're looking at $360-$480 a year.

And monitors are just hell. They feed just about everyday. When it gets bigger it's going to require meals from colossal rats, guinea pigs, chicks, maybe small pigs, and small rabbits. That's money I wont even begin to calculate. A friend made a mistake of buying a young water monitor. Was feeding on a dozen goldfish and 2-3 rat pinks a day. He then found it was taking too much money (coming from a guy who makes $100,000+ a year) so he offered it to me. Which I wasn't about to do because I know there is no way in hell I could take care of one with a small paying job and breeding rats.

I have someone locally that breeds rabbits and other small animals and offered me them at cost basically. I know they take a lot of work for both of them and yes I did research them both before buying them. I knew what I was getting into and no I was not buying for impulse. I had to save up to get my burmese girl so I did research in the process. I have already spent a pretty penny hiring a contractor to build the full size cages, and the supplies to go into the cage. They both should be in the new cages by middle of next yr in fact.
