A deal that we could refuse..

My husband, Mark, works as a tattooist, and let's say, he gets many rather interesting people in the shop. So this guy walks in, and they start talking snakes. Guy offers Mark his 12' burn for $50..
Mark actually called me to ask if I wanted it! I said, no way. I am sticking to my relatively safe "little" BPs and one male BCI.
It just worries me that someone with little regard for their giant, would dump it off on someone who could have never even handled one before. But that's how it goes, I guess.. yipes.
I have all of the admiration in the world for those who keep these beautiful giants and cause them to thrive in their care.

I agree- don't take onm something that you are not ready for! Thoguh I would just LOVE to have a yellow anaconda- and would kill for a retic, rather it was a normal or morp- the retic will NEVER happen and the anaconda probably wont either.

I would say that you made a good choice-I still can't believe that someone would just pretty much give their snake away to someone that they dont even know if they could care for it or not. I've given away one snake to someone I know, and that was hard- I can only imagine how rediculous I'm going to be when selling baby's.. *shakes head* I'm probably going to be paranoid and end up keeping them all thinking that no one will care for them right. lol.

i can't believe he wanted money for it. whoever buys it is doing him a favor since he can't take care of it any more.

lol, I would rather get a retic over an anaconda! The wording you used made me think that retics were these massive animasl, when it's the anacondas you gotta get a team to lift! LOL :D

YELLOW anacondas are significantly smaller than retics, full grown.

Right, they are longer, but it's such a slender animal for it's extreme size. I would find it harder to deal with an anaconda, green or yellow, than a retic.

Plus, retics come in dwarf size too! :D

lol, ok ok. I concur. Retics are massive. I just have always viewed the anacondas as being these massive, huge fat animals taking down gazelle, crocs, capybara and crap, and the retic as a more lithe but extremely long character. My bad. :oops:

Still though, I think I would prefer a retic over an anaconda, because of the last POM, the that Celia took the picture of. Heck ya, I want me one of those!

I actually thought about it for a little bit today. He said that it is 12'. I guess that since I only have limited experience with burms (only held one once) that it is a little out-there to consider getting it. I have had a lot of experience handling, feeding and caring for my friend's large female BCI who has to be a little more than 9'. I worked at her shop for a few years and was the main caretaker of that snake, and had fed and handled her numerous times. But I know that BCI and burms are two different things.. it would be a joint effort though, with my husband and I, and Mark is pretty experienced with burms actually, as a friend of his had a large one.
I guess that the cost would include its cage (not sure what that is, as I was not there.) Of course there are so many things to consider, such as the health of the snake, the possibility of parasites.. I understand that. And if it were an issue of needing feeders, that is simple; my friend breeds rabbits.
I am thinking now. Not by any means decided one way or the other.. but thinking.

I think that Lourdes is a gorgeous snake :) Your pics are so awesome. See, this is kind of like how I got my BCI. I had handled them some, but the real clincher was this avatar that an old user here (RPlank) had. I Had to have a boa after that.. never regretted that decision :)
I plan on getting a burm.. but I might wait awhile. I love the idea of getting a youngster and raising it myself, you know? But rescuing an unwanted one would be cool too.. ah, decisions.

well as the owner of a 13+ foot Reticulated Python, I say you made a great choice! When I picked up Daisy she has about 5' and the guy said that she was getting too big! I laughed in his face and took her for free. Now I have a thirteen year old brother that lives with me and I'm not sure which one of them cost more to take care of! :) After building her huge climate controlled enclosure and food I think she's winning the contest:rolleye2: One thing with a giant is that you must be focused when handling or even cleaning the cage as these are no hit and run biters. If they bite they mean it :soapbx:

I have not seen in the original post where the owner says that he can not take care of it anymore. Just because he has decided to sell it, does not mean that he can not take care of it. At least he talked with someone (Mark) that has snake experience instead of running an ad in the local newspaper.
But taking in or buying any snake with the potential to grow large should not be taken lightly.

Sounds like if he's trying to get rid of a healthy 12' foot burm for 50 bucks he's ditching it.:rolleyes: "just my 2cents worth" If he had the best interest of the animal in mind he would give it free to a good home that could care for it.....instead of trying to make a quick fifty and release himself of a big responsibility........yet again just IMHO:)

Those Gazelle/Croc/whatever eating animals would be the 'Nasty' AfRocks ;)

Kudo's to you Gin! On top of that, majority of novice, and 'ignorant' keepers keep their Burms too cool n such, and they come with a myriad of problems, including respiratory damage. I think you dodged a nice sum of vet bills as well...:P

Yeah.. If eventually, we do want to "graduate" to a giant snake.. I want to do it the right way! Not just b/c some jerk comes along who wants to ditch their snake..

Such a shame-wish I was closer to New York I'd come and get that burm. If you're ever going down the east coast-stop and and see our burms!!!!

I would love to get more hands-on exposure to them. I see them as gentle giants (I know that each snake is different and none are to be thought of as harmless, or behaved lax around..) But they are one of my "perhaps someday" snakes..

I don't have any experience with keeping large constrictors but I can only imagine what cleanup would be like!!!!!!!!

We use a shovel with a shortened handle-believe me it's not a pretty site.
