Rat bedding

i was wondering what a good cheap rat bedding is? i use aspen but it gives off a little smell. Ive seen some people with tube like pellets and other types of pellets, can some one give me links to good non wood shave beddings?

If you're look for cheap bedding, from my experience Aspen is the way to go. I can get a giant bag of it for $12 and have it last 6 months, while changing a rat cage, 2 snake habitats, and the mice house.

If you're looking for non wood you can try Yesterday's New, which is recycled newspaper pellets, or Carefresh which I think is also a paper/fiber type product. Some rats and mites get the sniffles/sneezing around Carefresh. I haven't had any experience with Yesterday's News, I just know it's another alternative.

If you have a farm supply/feed and tack store type thing near you check them out. I remember a member here mentioning a really good deal on a huge bag of horse bedding, which was a nice fine aspen. Avoid dusty pine bedding, some pine is fine as long as it's not the awful dusty sort. No cedar or cedar mix beddings that are often sold as "small animal bedding"...that stuff is just nasty.

I use pine pellets. One 40 lb bag for 5.99 at TSC of Equine Fresh. I don't know how many ratties you have, but my bag will last 2 1/2 weeks. That's about 15 tub changes. lol, does that make any sense... it's early. :oops:

It's so hard to find the perfect bedding for my colony of mites. They get the sneezes and are up all night.

We use huge bags of aspen for our dogs, it comes in a huge square bag. The smell is sorta strong and the chips look big but does that matter? I saw the pine pellets, but what i saw the pine part i didnt consider it even though they were grean and tube like, do they work seeing that they are not in wood form?

I think you may be looking for rabbit pellets. This is actually the food that rabbits eat. I use it for rat bedding sometimes and my rats love it better than anything else. It's about six bucks for a huge bag and it smells great.

I have been having success with the WoodyPet pellets. The smell is nonexistant unless you practically stick your nose into the rat tanks; then, it just smells woody. No urine odor at all. You do get a little poopy smell when it is more toward the time to change the pellets.. but the pellets break down when wet and turn into sawdust that stays remarkably un-dusty.. it is awesome!

I love my Eagle Valley ABM, its pretty much the same as Woody Pet. I can't see switching back to anything else.

Oh I forgot to mention. I add in a sock or washcloth for a bedding material, when using the WPet. It gives them something comfy to nest in.

For now i guess i'll stick to aspen untill i run out, then i'll look into woodypets pellets( i looked them up and they seem great) Here is a picture of the little guys in their 20 gallon. The light one( Breakfast) is my fav.

AWW. Breakfast looks like a fawn baby!! Love the fawns, that's something I'm really looking forward to getting, (If i can freakin find em!) :D

She was the last one they had, i was looking for a grey hooded but couldnt find one, and to my surprise the next day they had them in another tank i wasnt looking at. I like my male so i wont be tradeing him. The one beside her is Dinner(the male) and the one in the corner is Lunch. more pictures are in the photo section.

I hope you're not breeding them, they look WAY too young.. They need to be at least 4-5 months old and 250grams plus before they can successfully reproduce. I would separate them until then. Your beige girl looks to be about 8 weeks old.. MUCH too young..

Eee.. they do look way too young to breed. They really need to be seperated by sex.

I have a ten gallon that the male is in for right now.;)
