Jess, although the presentation may not have been the best, I think it's a fair question. I also remember her having RI's each year.

I can also remember her getting in new animals and taking photos of them the same day with her exisiting animals. She may not do that now, but she did.

I've talked to others that I respect about this, and they agree that an animal that isn't already compromised wouldn't succomb (her existing female) as quickly as it did.

I was also reminded that colds are viral infections.

Perhaps it's a difference in memory...she says in that thread that this is the first respiratory infection she's had in her collection.

Either way, it's a horrible thing to go through, and a useful thread for the rest of us.

Interesting...she's had two RI's in the past year before this animal arrived. There are questions that need to be answered.

Jas, you really should get your facts straight before you open your mouth (or should I say, punch the keys). My exact words were "I have never dealt with an RI before". That statement is true -- I had one WC female come in already blowing green goo straight out of the box. She died within a couple days, before I had the chance to treat her or do anything with her at all. After conferrring with Dr. Alan Slack, he stated that she was too far gone before she even arrived in order to be saved. The presence of neon green mucous and large amount of it indicated a strong bacterial RI. Hence, I have never dealt with an RI -- I didn't deal with her. That was also 9 MONTHS AGO -- my vet laughed when I mentioned people suggesting that the bug from that female lived in my carpet for 7 months then magically infected my collection all at the same time out of nowhere. That was the one and only RI ever -- not sure where you're getting "one every year" from or that I've had 2, 3, 4...you must be buddies with TWI, you guys both make things up and pull things out of you-know-where.

As my vet explained, an immunocompromised animal would. Dizzy died after 10 days, Lola died somewhere around 2-4 days after she must have developed symptoms, and I just lost the only baby I held back from my breedings this year. She showed NO SYMPTOMS at all, not even the very night before, then just 24 hours later in full blown respiratory and kidney failure. Yet the het clown held on for 2 months with full-blown symptoms. Why the difference between these animals? It is affecting each snake differently -- some have stronger immunity and ability to fight it than others. This seems like common sense here...

For those of you following this entire mess, here is a blog I made with all of the info I posted on the BOI (and more recent info that I had not). So instead of wading through 10 pages of garbage over there, this is all condensed into one page:

All I can say is the whole situation really sucks! Thanks Deb for sharing this. Many think quarrantine is paranoia/overrated and say "I have never had a problem". Hopefully we can learn from someone elses unfortunate experience and realize quarrantine can mean life or death.

Jen i am very sorry for your losses and problems. Instead of everyone trying to pass blame we should try to learn how to better care for our animals. We will probably never know who was at fault but we definately know what is at stake.

    Re: Viral Respiratory Infection Info
Dr. Gordon just called me 5 minutes ago, and left me a voicemail giving me some new information that is pretty much devastating.

He said he got ahold of a very respected snake pathologist that he trusts to have a broad knowledge of things like what we're dealing with, and when he asked her for her opinion before we sent the bodies down, this is what she told him:

Based on everything we have experienced this far, it sounds very much like a raptovirus -- which is related to rabies. She said they have documented it existing in various collections in Texas (gee, where did the het clown come from -- and I have never told him anything about her seller), and unfortunately there is no cure or treatment. It is basically comfort cares and allowing the animal to beat it on its own, which is highly unlikely. He said the key thing is separation, separation, separation. Keep the obviously infected animals as far away from the rest of the collection as possible (which has been done since October 12th when I moved the het clown into my bedroom, then when I moved the other sick snakes that showed up into my room as well). Clean EVERYTHING with bleach, wear gloves and some kind of lab coat when working with the infected animals, and discard it afterwards. This virus has a good probability of wiping out out my entire collection.

At this point, we are still sending out the 3 bodies for full analysis to determine whether or not this is the raptovirus, and we will go from there. The tests for each sample needed run upwards of $200 each, so this is not going to be easy -- but it must be done if we are going to nail this down.

I will keep updating as things progress.
