w00t 2 leo's for a great price
Well, Well, Well............. Guess i can start posting in this section now :P well i went to a pet store in the mall. i usually go and talk crap to the employees cause they are uneducated employees. well anyways, i met a cool dude whos in to herps and he knows his stuff pretty well. kinda surprising for hell paso. well anyways i was like dude im not paying 259 for the albino burm they had. he was like well i can hook you up with anything here besides the burm cause the managers watching that one. So i saw 2 leopard geckos. they were adults. one is white and the other is that yellowish with like a purple band and green......... pretty much a rainbow. well anyways they had them listed at 79.99 each. i told him, think you can knock that price off a little for me. he said throw a number at me. i said i dont know, i always wanted one though. he said............40..... i said okay so which one. he said ill sell you both for 40. i was like OMG! so my wife was down at the other end of the mall getting a haircut and this to me was one of those, dont ask questions now, ask for forgivness later. i was like HELL YEAH! so he boxed em up and gave them to me for 40. i walked out the mall with a huge smile! 40 bucks for 2 adult Leos... even though i got smacked by wife, i still had the smile and do to this moment :) :) :)
As most know i have been carrying for a good amount of snakes already. i have done quite a bit of research already on them. of course first thing i did was mealworms, water and a hide and a temp gradient. i feel i know a good amount on my snakes, so i know this wont be hard.
i understand they come from the dry arid deserts and some out of the savannahs. they are nocturnal creatures and eat the basic feeder insects and occassionally a pinky.
my questions are, some say sand, alot of guide's say sand is okay. i just wanted to know why some of you prefer other then sand subtrates. what do you feel is best?
as with my snakes, i use red Infrared bulbs so i can view them at night. Is this okay with leos? i love their personalitys. not like a snake who just occassionally slithers around. these guys are so funny when they are "attacking mealworms". i would appreciate watching them with the lights out. i got basic husbandry correct, was just wondering on the bulbs really :P thanks alot!
w00t back to my new family members

The red bulbs are perfect for night viewing, and as for the substrate that is much debated. I used to use good ol play sand and no probs but currently I just use reptile carpet.
Oh and welcome to the lizard owning family!

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
congrats on the additions! remember that even though they do live in dry areas they do dig in the ground where they stay during the day and it is nice and humid in these burrows. so do use a humid hide, especially while the leos are in shed.
i would not recommend sand as substrate under any conditions, no matter what type of sand it is. here is my own reason why: http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/s...ad.php?t=45900.

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
Ya, I've heard plenty of horror stories about sand impaction on leos, both juvies and adults, so i just went the 'safe road' and used some leftover kitchen tile for substrate for my leos.

thanks for the tip. i did a search for info on leos and i see that 1 of the most talked about subjects is the subtrate. some say sand is okay and some say no. just wanted to get some point of views from some people... i had bought some red sand from zoo meds but i will change that out soon.
i see they require 1 hide and a humid hide, a water dish, and a food tray. im gonna get a low watteged red bulb after my family visits today.
as far as food, i currently got meal worms. i read that they rely on movement to distinguish their prey. do alot of leo fanatics feed meal worms because a nutritional value over crickets? i have researched raising mealworms and it looks way easy. but i see them in the pet stores with crickets, so was just wondering. i know you cut the back legs of the crickets off to make it easier on them as well.
well thanks for responses, im gonna start making their hides now, any other suggestions for leos is greatly appreciated. thanks guys and gals!

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
When I had my leos, I fed them a mixture of both crix and mealworms. I'd feed them crix one day, MW the next. It's what ever is the easiest for you to obtain I guess. As far as pinky mice go, I was never able to get any of my leo's to eat one, and from my understanding, these should only be feed to recovering females after laying eggs, and to males if they have been losing weight from breeding. It's definately not a once a week thing. Just make sure that the MW or crix have been gut loaded and the dusted with calcium/ multivitamins and you can't go wrong.

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
I've had a leo for about 2 years now, and after he was about 5 inches long I switched him from carpet to calcium sand. He has never had a problem with it. I've seem him eat a little bit of it when he misses a cricket or something, but he has never been impacted. The only problem I had was when I decided to go for a change and bought him blue sand. I had a BLUE leo for a couple weeks until he shed! That made me mad, so now I only get white sand, I'm gonna get the glow in the dark sand next! and get a black light for it since he's in my living room now. But this is just my opinion. I know a lot of people hate sand, but like I said I've never had a problem with it. I know calcium sand doesn't really supply calcium, but I think it's so fine that it just passes threw. But who knows.

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
Yeah, if you're gonna do sand I definately recommend Calci-Sand because like they said, if they eat some of it on accident its no big deal as it passes on through. We have 3 of our beardies on calci-sand and never had a problem with them (except having a purple bearded dragon because of her dark purple sand, lol) she jumps in the water bowl, then through the sand and she looks like a little barney! lol

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
i really wouldn't recommend calci-sand for leos. it isn't as fine as the playground sand, and there is no way to know if it really is all passing through or not. the fact that you see any of it in the feces should be reason enough to replace it with something that won't get ingested at all. why risk it ya know?

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
congrats on your new addition.. i know all about that "ask for forgive-ness later" deal lol.. although aparently it isnt as cute anymore to the good ole' hubby lol... i would also reconsider the substrate

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
Sounds like you have a blizzard ( or maybe a blazing blizzard )and an albino. I had a blizzard become impacted from eating calcium sand. It turned out ok though. But I stopped using sand as a result. I use paper towels now. I leave calcium in dishes for all my leos. The one that was impacted as a baby eats calcium all the time. I rarely see the others eating calcium. But take it from me the impaction threat is real.Leos are fun.You will enjoy them.

Re: w00t 2 leo's for a great price
so btw how many mealworms is a good amount for an adult? i hear you dont want to overfeed. i throw about 6 mealworms covered in that t-rex stuff. i threw some crickets in there last night and OMG that pissed me off so bad! sounded like house was infested. i decided to Free the crickets and stick to worms.
upon watching these 2 girls at night with a red bulb. these girls really have some personalities. i laugh so hard cause one stalks its worm like its gonna fight back or run. i was like GET 'EM GIRL GET 'EM! well the white one still needs work being handled but the orange one is awesome. i just need to give the white one some chillax pillz and it will be alright. i got some stones and im gonna make them a custom hide out of it with fiberglass.
so is a 20 long good enough to last 2 leos for life?
thanks:salute:

they were on paper during the transition from that sand junk. then i had to change it again cause they pooped and it stunk so bad. the shed also came off the feet already on the white one. i had to make a humid hide. so whats their colors? thanks:gj:

sweet! i know i was going to petco in cruces and cussing out the "reptile specialist". pretty dumb over there. anyways, NICE im going to have to check it out. cruces isnt big on reptiles, like el paso. but i always check all the stores to make sure its okay. do they have anything interesting? besides normal BP's. descent prices? im looking at getting a normal burm, 2 albino burms, another red tail*from jimi*;) i fell in love with the blood pythons as well. well if you need feeders, i can get them for you cheap. well cheapest in hell paso. Im friends with the owner of sun city and we go catching rattlers and crap in the summer. depending on what you need, he supplys all of el paso's stores. he has a room in the back that has a OMG amount of rats/mice/guinea pigs/rabbits/black tail rattlers, WDB's, Mojave's. i know when i feed my burm his Large rat is like a chihuahua :P i get rat pups for like 75cents or 1.50 for small and so forth. i was paying about 3.50 for BIG rats. he also has a death chamber and will euthanize them on the spot for F/T. What do you have as reptiles?
