i think my retf are fat...
Thats right.. the pair got up early this evening (using artificial lighting has helped give them day/night) and i snapped a few fun pics and i really think they are getting fat. If they are is that a bad thing? Aside from offering them fewer crickets is there anything i should/shouldnt do? I think its a good thing that they are at least keeping weight on right?

ill post pics if they are helpful ... was going to anyway ;)

Re: i think my retf are fat...
awe, too bad.. chances are depending on your location you might have to order them. Take a look at kingsnake.com and see what you can find there, ordering them is a possibility. I dont know anything about that particular store but you dont want to purchase anything from a store that doesnt pay attention to husbandry, i know alot of pet stores down here (not the reptile ones) are terrible about keeping temps/humidity right and with these guys you really want to get nice healthy frogs. Try to make sure they dont pick them up either... if the people know anything about the frogs have them help you select one (or two or three what ever you plan to get) so you get ones that are more healthy weight wise... the place i got mine from were very knowledgable and helpful in the selection process. You can also try talking to the shop (if you trust them to keep the animals in ideal living conditions) and have them order them.

    good luck!

here are a couple more caresheets, i have always liked using more than two so i know if information is wide spread, just because one caresheet says one thing doesnt make it right kinda deal.

ok, i have one frog that looks very healthy and plump and the other one is getting a bit skinney i think. would it usually take this long fo rthem to show signs of weight loss/stress. i do not handle them but because they live in a pair i wouldnt know who was eating and who wasnt. the one is def. eating as i saw its poops below it tonight (healthier looking one) the other one however stays in the other corner and if not sleeping in the dirt hes sitting in it (sometimes attached to leaves) so its tough to see poops from it.

well retf #2 (the one who is skinnier) is awake now (i have dark light on so i can see) and watching the crickets crawling around.. both frogs are "watching" them. im curious to see them actually eat. if nothing else i put in 9 and there is no way they are getting out of the ziplock thingy with a leg missing.

ashley, they are such interesting creatures to have. i have absolutly no regrets and if anything happens to either of these i would most certainly replace it. I dont know that I will ever go without having them again!

I have this melamine coated wood shelving unit that I have stored in my closet for months now just waiting to convert it into a retf habitat.

Once the reptile room is complete I think I am going to have to finally get working on making it into a cage.

#2 poo'd! There must be some intake.. he is kinda skinney compared to #1. #2 is usually pretty dark too come to think of it. I cant wait to see whats missing in the morning.

Re: i think my retf are fat...
sounds like they are becoming successfully cup trained. :)

do keep an eye on the thinner of the two. spending a lot of time on the bottom, especially when sleeping is not normal for retfs but as long as it is eating and defecating he should be okay. its possible he was stressed while acclimating (which is normal as long as it doesn't last for too long) and that's why he was spending time there and coloring up so dark.

Re: i think my retf are fat...
well, all the crickets were gone this morning.. i have one frog on the wall (fatty) and the other on a leaf that was leaning over the food dish.. they both look pretty good today, ill have to see what they look like tonight when they are awake and moving about. they are always that really pretty pale color while they sleep and when they are awake they are pretty dark, can it be they are stressed when awake and not when they are asleep? or is it just that they change colors when they are awake for camo purposes.

Re: i think my retf are fat...
they are lighter when sleeping and darker when active and awake--i'm not sure it's for camoflauging though. do both of yours stay that really dark color when they are awake? mine were always more of a bright green (like the frog in your avatar) unless they were stressed or sick (not saying that yours are, just that that's how mine were).

interesting. maybe they are a different locale (nicaragua, costa rica, etc.) than the frogs i had are normally darker.

Re: i think my retf are fat...
mine are darker, or yours are darker?? i was thinking it was because they were in defense/hunting mode and tahts why they would be so dark...who knows, as long as they are alive and eating im happy ;)

oops, i didn't really word that right at all. i meant that your frogs are darker than the frogs i had. here are a few old pics of mine taken during their awake hours (i think the top one was taken with flash and the bottom was without):

I think they are slightly different actually.. their heads are even differnet a little bit, although it could just be different animals (you and i are humans but dont look alike type thing) they are beautiful great pics!!

real quick, because im concerned with the ones weight should i be feeding them nightly? They are sitting above where the food dish was (Took it out for cleaning) as if the crickets are going to appear lol

Re: i think my retf are fat...
they are close to adult size so they shouldn't need to be feed every day unless they are underweight. that said, i'm not really even sure what the proper weight is for a retf (but they shouldn't look thin), but you might feed them a few crickets tonight and see if they go for them. how many crickets of what size did they eat last?

Re: i think my retf are fat...
well i put 9 in there two days ago.. last night there were 3 and today they were gone.. They are pretty big crickets, xxxxxxxx about that long.. sorry but everyone calls them something different. they were a bit bigger than what were used to.

    what the heck was that?!!!!

One of the frogs was doing this hopping in place thing for about 10 seconds, very powerful like im shocked it didnt break the blade of plant while the other frog creeped by while it made a quick quiet almost croak sound.. i did mist the tank heavily tonight.. is that calling or a defensive action? way cool!!!

Re: i think my retf are fat...
you could go ahead and feed tonight. usually 3 or 4 feedings per week is good as long as they are eating all the crickets in between each feeding. if there are still crickets left over when it is time to feed again just feed less crickets.

i'm not sure about the hopping in place. they don't tend to be territorial so maybe the hopping frog was just excited to see the other one? :P ha, i don't really know.

misting the tank doesn't really induce breeding behavior--a rain chamber set on a timer and the barometric changes from spring storms does. males will still call and attempt to breed at various times of year (but especially during spring storms) but the females just lug them around while they hang on for dear life.:P

ok, so i dont loose count i put in 7. It actually went alot faster clipping legs this time. i guess im getting better at it lol (not something to be proud of.. poor crickets, i would rather die to a beardie)

edit: wow what a fast response!! there is already 2 missing crickets and the frog (cant tell them apart) is still in the food tub! that was wonderful suggestion emily

edit #3: there are now 3 missing total and i got to see one of the frogs eating!!!!!!!!
